I remember one game where Zidane man marked Messi with Kovacic at the Bernabeu. Messi was dragging him whatever he wanted, leaving a huge gap in Real Madrid's midfield. The game ended 0:3 and Barcelona eventually won the title.
Still remember Messi retiring from international football back in 2015, for him to come back 7 years later and win the World Cup it is truly mesmerizing.

The debate is well and truly over in my opinion. Messi inspired that team and not just over this tournament. He, the team, as well as the change in management and attitude in the Argentina setup - built toward this day. But, why he is the GOAT compared to CR7 - his attitude in his twilight. After around 2015, Messi's ungodly talent had already earned him a place among the two other football gods: Pelé and Maradona. But with the 2021 Copa America and now the World Cup, Messi became the greatest of them, in my opinion. Ronaldo did come close to being counted among them, simply by virtue of his outrageous goal scoring ability. But his international career fell short. He is one of the greatest players ever for sure, with an illustrious club career, full of individual awards. But now that his career is ending, to me he finished at the level of other legends like Cruyff, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazairo, and Beckenbauer. He probably tops that list. But he does not make the GOAT shortlist. To do that you have to become more than a player - you have to transcend football to become a national a hero and change the sport itself. You have to have created legendary moments that got burned into people's memories, and which will be remembered for generations. Ronaldo always lacked that thing you can't describe - the touch of genius that set Messi, Pelé and Maradona apart. He was a goal scoring machine, but not much else. What truly set him apart was that he was the most marketable player ever. But he's no hero - he's a brand that was distributed en masse. He's not even close to Messi. He never was.
I would put R9 in the same class, talent wise, as Maradona, Pele & Messi. Injuries, at a very young age, derailed what could’ve been potentially the greatest career ever. Remember, Ronaldo at 22 had already won the Ballon D’or & FIFA World Player twice.

I can't imagine any player under the kind of pressure Messi was under in this Final: the pressure from his country, his peers, his team, everything. A pressure unlike anything I've seen in sport. That alone puts him above anyone else.
There was never a debate imo Messi can still turn defenders inside out with skill and pace. Ronaldo started to lose that at 32 and had to change the way he played.
Ronaldo could only ever get past 1 player anyway, he doesnt have the technical skill or agility to do what messi does, he just relied on his speed and strength.
I'm no big fan of Cristiano. But, tbf, Messi also adapted his way to play when he turned 30. He has to decide if he turns alien. Back in the days, he was alien as soon as the first whistle was blown until the game ended. I have seen so many games of him, especially from 2007-2015 that it's not fair to claim he hasn't had to adapt his style. He had to. The point here is, that - despite being 35 - he is still the best player in the world. That is something no one had ever achieved, this kind of continuity for at least 15 years. I can't recall exactly if it was in 2004 or 2005 when Dinho was voted player of year by fifa. He said in an interview after the ceremony ( and I quote): "This award here says I'm the best player in the world, but I'm not even the best player at Barcelona." He was referring to Messi, of course. I think it was in 2005, but don't nail me on that ^^

people overhyped mbappes hattrick 2 penalties in for the same team in a world cup final is a disgrace and hurst achievement is stil better unless he got 2 penalty goals too of course
Mbappe shows how the penalty should be taken, pick your spot, shoot with pace and power. Even if the GK guess the direction right, there’s no chance he could have save it. Remind me of Ruud van Nistelrooy way of penalty taking
,the Argentinians scored better penalty's than Mbappe !!!. It takes some nerve and talent to just roll the ball past the keeper !!!!. Power shots do get saved !!! If the keeper guesses the right way . But to eyeball the keeper and send him the wrong way is just natural talent !!!!.
Yesterday, heart and passion won over skills AND arrogance... I am very happy that Messi fulfills his dream (and that of football fans all around the world). Congratulations Argentina, Congratulations Lionel Messi 🇦🇷🏆🐐
I'm happy you alluded to the arrogance of Mbappe and France. Argentina showed tremendous strength to come back from three body blows -- a lesser team could have not pulled that one out. Vamos Argentina!

There was never a debate... Messi's always been the better dribbler/ ball passer / playmaker / more consistent free kick technician / all while scoring prolifically. Cristiano could only compete with Messi on the goals front. Once his ball playing style fell off, after 2013. Mbappé is the future of football, once Messi hangs up his boots.
