The debate over the geographical center of North America

For years Rugby, North Dakota, a tiny spot on the prairie, had made a name for itself from its designation as the geographical center of the North American continent - that is, until a bar owner in the town of Robinson, about a hundred miles south, used some string and a globe to claim his town was the true center. Correspondent Lee Cowan visited these unassuming contestants in a tectonic battle for bragging rights, and talked with a geography professor who, armed with latitudes, longitudes and algorithms, may have laid the question of center to rest.

Thank you Sunday Morning for such an intriguing and enlightening story. You did such a fine job of opening our minds and eyes to such a beautiful territory I never knew existed. Yes, the center of North America is important because it just is, and because of it's beautiful plains and wide open spaces.

@@JillWhitcomb1966 From Montucky, depends what part of my state you are at to the friendly nature. It is changing quickly overall as more out of staters move in and bring the snobby atmosphere. For the most part how chatty people are and friendly directly correlates with how relaxed the lifestyle is. If you go to any third world country you will find people more friendly than most of Europe were people are pretty uptight.
@JillWhitcomb1966
@JillWhitcomb1966 3 года назад
@@SlayerofFiction Sorry, I don't know what 'Montucky' means. Either way, Fargo is the only place in North Dakota that has felt comfortable to me due to the more open minds, the ethnic diversity, the abundance of ethic grocery stores, and the better public transportation. I've been to India where yes, the locals were friendly. However, it was mostly local Indian men flirting with me and asking me out on dates (I declined). Even so, although I grew up in North Dakota and have lived here for 40 years, it no longer feels like 'home' to me due to the lack of progressive minds. It has vastly improved over the years, however, old attitudes and old ideas still remain for many of the born-and-raised North Dakota locals here.

You could call it the “North Dakota Triangle” and spin a yarn about things that disappear inside its boundaries. Maybe that would help the state compete with South Dakota, Mount Rushmore and the tourism industry. Actually, my dad was born in Mandan, North Dakota in 1900, and I have a deep love and appreciation for the state. But I was born and raised a Minnesotan, so I do have to have a little fun too.

You should do a similar story on the center of Asia memorial in Kyzyl, Tuva. Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman always wanted to visit Tuva because as a boy he collected their stamps. But he couldn’t during the Cold War because of his involvement with the Manhattan Project and that Tuva was the site of the Russian equivalent. When the Cold War ended, he planned to go, but passed away before he could make the trip. So some of his graduate students made the trip instead and placed a plaque in his memory on the monument. I was there in 1992 adopting a child who’s orphanage was right by it, When I looked for the plaque, it had been removed.

ND is a nice place in my experience. I visited first visited there in 2003 (just the south eastern corner) and wasn't especially impressed, but when I went back in 2019, and drove across the entire state exploring it more, I like it. The people were nice and friendly, and the Theodore Roosevelt NP is beautiful. The history is amazing too. I love history, and the pioneer history in ND does not disappoint. From Fort Union Trading Post, to Fort Mandan, and Fort Abraham Lincoln, there are many interesting places. I have visited all 50 states, and the last few years, I've been kind of going back and filling in gaps in some states I've been to but had missed cool places in them.

Could that not be said to be the "true" center of the continent?

I thought it was Belle Fourche, SD. Years ago I use fantasize about big infrastructure projects. 1 was system of giant circular superhighways (beltways) with critical infrastructure down their medians around all cities, states to complement the interstate system. & 1 was those of those was a maglev in a partial vacuum tube moving around the at 1000 mph(long before Elon). So I made a pt to find the geo ctr of North America & the U.S.. All done on paper with a Rand McNally road atlas(remember those?) & a big protractor, ruler, & geometric contructions. I like these guys. Very good-natured, just having fun w/ the subject. & 1 if them does sound like Charles Kuralt.i remember him on Sunday Mornings & his road trips. I remember when he declared the Beartooth Highway(HY 212) the most beautiful highway in the world. P.S. I'm not a Boomer.

According to Wikipedia, the westernmost point is Wrangell Island, Alaska (52°55′28″N 172°28′22″E). The southernmost point is an island controlled by Costa Rica (5°31′8″N 87°4′18″W). Because Greenland is considered to be part of North America, the northernmost point is an island north of Greenland (83°40′N 29°50′W), and the easternmost point would be a town at its eastern edge (81°26′25″N 11°29′22″W). So the midpoint between all these is at a point near The Golf Club at Lora Bay near Christie Beach, Canada. You can't just balance Canada, the US, and Central America on a pin - unless you include Greenland.

Maps, and to a lesser extent, globes are distorted by the projection methods used in their creation. Landmasses are stretched and skewed in various ways to better represent the details that said maps are intended to focus on. One can’t just grab a man made object with it’s inherent flaws, poke at it, and decide things about the world. Satellite surveys and a good amount of calculation could settle this debate.

North Dakota may be the geographical center of North America (Canada, United States, and Mexico). However, the geographical center of The United States of (North) America, or The U.S.A. is pretty darn close to the capital of the Cornhusker football team state: Lincoln, Nebraska.

It's a Continent. It's land. Canada is on the North American Continent. You can not consider yourself part of a Country. Like the U. S. or Canada. But not sure you can just consider yourself separate from all of the dirt n grass and land & water mass of an entire Continent 😆 that's not really how land masses work. Land doesn't care what us mammals Think hahaha.

I'm curious about how you arrived at the conclusion that geography grades have something to do with not liking this video. As if, "who gives a crap", "this is a ridiculous and irrelevant argument", or the scoffing at the absurdity of which, Americans find reasons to argue, can't be valid reasons to dislike this imbecillic argument. Just FYI, I had a 4.0 all the way though school, 1600 on my SAT score, 99 on my ASVAB test (1984) and am a member of MENSA and guess what? I've hit dislike on this video.

@@Im2Old4ThisShite I love this comment So much!!! I think very similar thoughts so often about comments that decide to judge a person's morality based on a RU-vid like or dislike or just hateful judging in comments in general, towards strangers because of a thought or opinion they shared I always wonder.. just curious if they are really so hateful to people with opposing views? Or so narrow minded they cannot hear another viewpoint & must belittle the person? Or insult their intelligence or wealth or values? Because they don't agree with you? I rarely ask tho because I dint want to be seen as sticking up for the opposition and get hate & anger thrown at me as well. So, love seeing your comment cuz I've thought it so its nice to see my question plus I m not the only 1 curious about this behaviour... thats nice to know. ...is it just strangers online or do people feel this way towards those around them in real life too if they have opposing views? (And keeping it secret?)Is someone around Me secretly raging at me??

@@patricesage331 I couldn't dream of saying I understand why people behave the way they do. All of the years I've spent in other countries with the Marine Corps, I've noticed that Americans, more so than most others, have this toxic attitude that their opinions and needs trump all others. Yes, that pun pleasantly presented itself and I shamelessly used it. 🤭 But specifically to social media, so many people online have this notion that THEIR opinion is the only valid one. Just yesterday I was reading comments in a Tom cruise interview where person after person after person after person proceeded to detail what, why and how Tom Cruise felt and behaved towards another actor. AS IF, they had the most remote privilege of knowing Tom Cruise personally and could make these statements the way one of Tom's friends, family or coworkers could. It was positively astounding to read.

@@Im2Old4ThisShite part of why I loved your comment was specifically the way you worded your opening. "Curious" about how they arrived at the "Conclusion." The curious, as I am too cuz I just cant even begin to guess so I'm very Curious of how they got THERE. and it also almost never sounds like a viewpoint or their opinion so Conclusion was a good choice. 👍if I get brave enough to enter the online word war I will likely steal / borrow your words haha.
