According to data collected last year, nearly 6,000 people experienced homelessness in the islands - with the vast majority of those being residents and 1 in 4 being Native Hawaiians.
With homelessness still proving to be a chronic problem, state Sen. Joy San Buenaventura and state Rep. John Mizuno sat down with HNN on “The Debrief” to discuss this issue and what is being done to help those in need.

I used to think that Joy was in touch with the reality of homelessness, but after hearing this I reject that. Allowing people to live in doorways of downtown, waterfront businesses using public areas for toilets is UNACEPTABLE. Police walk by and do nothing unless the homeless person is actively hurting themselves.

Police have been admonished by the Courts - its a Social problem - not a criminal problem - they were told. So now their hands are tied. If they try to do something - the loud minority makes complaint’s against them. The silent majority suffers because of it.

It seems that there would be Restroom and Shower Facilities for the homeless, and not make them suffer. We should all use the heart we have and offer comforts to those who have nothing. Maybe some places that offer some hot water for soups and hot coffee, chocolate, tea, oatmeal, and others that they can get themselves.

Hawaii is unique, the taxpayers should fund an accurately audited fleet of ships to move crucial products, including feed for livestock. In conjunction with zoning vacant lands to be agricultural areas, Hawaii could lower cost of living greatly using state owned ships and private farms. The status-quo state/local officials gotta go, get honest brains...

Absolutely ridiculous rents, caused by natives being displaced by people from other states either 1) buying up the real estate for AirBNB or 2) non natives who come to Hawaii in order to be homeless. Both issues need to be addressed.

Politicians are out of touch, you guys are asking the wrong ones. Ask the ones who represents the downtown Hilo. Whenever you clear one area they just move to another. Affordable housing only takes care of only a small position. There are those who don't know how to takecare of the place they live. They get killed out of the place they live because they leave the place a mess. Education is needed.

Ironically the service oriented restaurants & stores are having a SEVERE shortage of WORKERS! Many employers realize they have to pay far above the minimum wage to attract & keep workers. Sadly, businesses find they have to cut their business hours, or close for a couple days per week. Thirty thousand Hawaii residents have left the islands in the last 3 years. This is due to our ridiculous cost of living, and housing shortage. Home ownership in Hawaii is not possible for most people.

Senator Joy and Rep. Mizuno are on top of it, focused on solutions. Very impressed. What I don’t understand, and maybe someone can explain to me, is why our Hawaiian Homelands in upcountry Maui is two acre parcels? Shouldn’t there be more density, so more people can be served? You hit the nail on the head when you said that the average hopeless helpless homeless person can afford $$$ 500+/ month in apartment rent being working poor working a minimum wage job with the average apartment rent being $$$ 3,000/ month. Sure, a high % being 25% of said homeless persons are Polynesian Kanaka Maoli ( Native. Affordable housing will not help the homeless as they do not want any help which has rules to follow. Most of the homeless just want to live that lifestyle and want to live a no give a F life and respect for the public. So, we need to place them in part of the Island where they are hidden from the public. I was getting my medication Rx from longs Kapolei and a homeless lady enter the store knocking down can goods. The store manager asks the homeless woman to leave her store nicely and the homeless started to get violent and yelling f- you don't tell want to do, my wife and everyone in the store was terrified, so they do affect and stress the public which is just not acceptable! My wife refuses to go to the gas station because of homeless yelling and swearing to the public she is too scared to get out of the car to pay for her gas knowing she could be confronted by a derange crazy person.

I don’t know much but it seems that what we need to remember is that we’re not dealing with is a native Hawaiian local people not to be discriminatory but we need to take care of our Island people first what we have here is 90% of incoming people from other states with either a police record as long as our arm and bring nothing to the table when they end up here in Hawaii The high rate of homelessness is being contributed by a judicial system court system if you will special arrangements from other states with a one-way ticket to the Highlands they get here they get settled in nowhere they have to go work all the different avenues available and may or may not have some type of addiction and and once you’re settled in they will pitch a tent and that’s where they operate from. If we go to solve this problem we have to start at the core which in this case stop bringing the people from other states to increase our population of homelessness which puts our state city county into severe debt and unnecessary headaches because as you can see the homelessness population is not really our Island born people the percentage is very low compared to the influx of newcomers or homeless individuals from other states so if we keep building and become blindsided with this Core issue they were only inviting thousands and thousands of more to come live and be taken care of by being part of the homeless population on our islands. Think about it. It’s always gonna be our Island people first that’s pono. On top of that just thinking how much taxes we pay which would be a lot more constructive and welcoming if we started from our local people in need first it would also help with the court system being so crowded with ridiculous cases I think at this point we would save more money for the state and the county by scrutinizing and looking into our court system and create a new law that would make sure that other courts off our islands in other states cannot send hospital patients convicted Court felonies, And other court offenders as well as other persons with no present address phone number ID etc. to our islands we have to do something. Think about it

Addiction is a mental health condition. Separating them without separating all other mental health conditions is for political manipulation. There is no need to separate mental health conditions. The two causes of homelessness is mental health conditions and underemployment.

@franklincheney3653

Where I live, the govt tiny home and RV camps are mostly vacant, because the rules/laws imposed on 'residents', don't fit the addict/criminal lifestyle. Note that it's mainly redistributed tax dollars funding such failed efforts, flushed down the drain, while the taxpayers suffer the robbery, burglary and car theft that support the addictions. Police are expected to pick up the slack, and corrupt prosecutors just point criminals to the revolving door.

Many USA criminals are purposely living cheap without rent or mortgage, to support their addictions. Some also do both, using tent camps as portable drug dens, and even drug-labs. This happens wherever hardcore democrats create the laws and policies. Affordable housing is a myth, and the 'crisis' is self inflicted from top to bottom. For starters, Hawaii needs to farm and ranch their vacant lands, to bring down the cost of food.
