The University of Michigan owns a staggering 369,515 titles of microfilms. This video focuses on the specific percentage which concern declassified government information - everything from the files on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s desk, to the surveillance of African-Americans.
Microfilms are typically defined as reels consisting of transparent film with scaled-down reproductions of documents in order to make for more efficient transmission, storage, and printing of information.
A vast majority of the microfilm is stored off-site, because of storage issues in the Shapiro and Hatcher libraries. However, some of the microfilm is stored right here on campus. Disclaimer: Microfilms in the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library are not discussed in this video.
