The biggest recent Sega news is that citing major losses from the lockdown, Sega Sammy sold off their legendary arcade locations to a holding company called GENDA, renaming all former Sega locations to GIGO. It's a major cultural loss, and it was surreal to see videos of crews removing the SEGA signage from buildings.

Games were also much smaller endeavors back then. Modern AAA titles cost tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars to create, and with bigger investments comes a smaller willingness to stray from proven formulas. That's why you see the most experimentation in the smaller indie space.

The PlayStation wasn't the only CD-ROM based system with hundreds of games, arcade sound, and 3D graphics capabilities. Sega had released the Sega CD three years earlier at the same price point but brought over dozens of lazy ports and shitty FMV games. Of 204 games to reach the market, perhaps 20 were fantastic (Soul Star, Batman, Sonic CD, Snatcher, Luna series), a few were decent, but a majority were absolutely awful. SEGA should've poured all of that 32X money and marketing into bringing out perfect arcade ports, great jRPGs, league licensed sports games, and great 3D graphics that the Sega CD was clearly capable of. Ironically, we would see none of this on the Saturn, which managed to sell fewer consoles in North America than the "failed" Sega CD. Not only that, but the release of the 32X and the Saturn against the backdrop of the Neptune, Jupiter, Pluto, etc, roadmap left developers and customers confused and unwilling to risk ANOTHER $400 on a company that seemed to have spontaneously gone insane.

Also, Arcades where huge in the 1990s, and the gaming magazines all over the shelves would promote sick games but a lot of them were overseas only. I think Sega Saturn was my favorite until I switched over to Sony PS1 in the late '90s. I also remember all the hype of Sony PS2, even back then it was $500 for a total package w/game- although PS2 really lacked games for the first several months. To this day Im not totally impressed with Playstation games only a few really stand out to me

@Christopher-N 2 года назад
You didn't mention Nintendo's and Sega's different strategies regarding game licensing and development. Nintendo had a lot of control over the games developed for their system, and while this protected them (remembering the video game crash), it was also very restrictive and prohibitively costly for third-party developers wanting to make a game; lockout, reverse engineering, and related lawsuits also play into it. Game developers found the Saturn difficult to work with, and the Dreamcast's controllers were just awful. Sega released stop-gap accessories for the Genesis rather than waiting for the Saturn, and then prematurely released the Saturn. The Saturn wasn't on the market very long before being replaced by the Dreamcast. Don't get me wrong-I love my Genesis and Saturn-but the poor decisions, and disagreements between North America and Japan, eliminated them from the console industry.
@SudrianTales
@SudrianTales 2 года назад
If I recall, Tom Kalinske the US Sega president wanted the Saturn launch delayed a bit and the 32X take the reins for a bit to allow for it to be more mature, of course the smartest thing to have done would've been the original plan. Say yes to Sony when they offered the Playstation. With Sega's game and console making skills and Sony's massive production centers and budgets, Nintendo would've had a bleak future.

Reading the articles on wikipedia about the DreamCast's controller and comparing that to the N64's is interesting. I have, as much as I love my N64 to bits, always found the 64's controller to be awkward as hell, while the DC's has always seemed quite ergonomic, especially on any comparative basis between the two. Guess I'm in the minority though as I also preferred 360's controller over a DualShock.

I live in the UK and the Genesis was called the SEGA Megadrive. My brother and I started our love of consoles with the SEGA MasterSystem and loved games, such as Alex Kid, Fantasy Zone, WonderBoy, etc. Then we upgraded to the MegaDrive. Everyone else was buying Nintendo, but we felt a loyalty towards SEGA, especially Sonic and it paid off with Mortal Combat (even though we weren’t really aloud to play it ☺️). Then there were games like Streets of Rage, ToeJam and Earl, Golden Axe, Bomberman, Earthworm Jim and Altered Beast. It was such a great console whilst it lasted. Then, one Christmas our parents scraped their hard earned money together and bought my brother and I a Sony PlayStation and we’ve stuck with the PS ever since. Great video, brought back some good memories 👍🏻

@@rars0n Yeah, it's so weird how many Sega things are considered "flops" and "failures" like the Sega CD or Dreamcast. Back then if you weren't #1 on the sales chart, you were labeled a total failure and a joke!! If a musician had a huge #1 album and the next one didn't sell 100 million copies the media would label it an embarrassing flop. I'm 33 and just got my first Sega CD in 2019 and I haven't even played all the big games but any game I do play I am blown away by the audio. It's like amazing 2D graphics (and some 3D effects) but now instead of the 8bit tunes and sound effects it's full blown orchestras, rock music, real sound effects and voice actors in 1992! Snatcher is a jaw dropping masterpiece.
@rars0n
@rars0n 2 года назад
@@awill891 Snatcher is awesome, and the Sega CD is home to some games you can't play anywhere else, not to mention improved versions of cart games. Yeah, sure, the potential may not have been fully utilized, but there's enough gems in the library to make it worthwhile. And as someone who loves to explore old games that I missed the first time around, I appreciate systems like the Sega CD and the 3DO that don't have an absolute sea of titles to browse through just to find something good. There's no 20 different versions of a particular sports game, for example, that you need to try in order to find the best one. Also, I loved them back then and I STILL have a soft spot for the cheesy FMV stuff. The graininess of the Sega CD in particular is just so of-its-time that I can't help but love it in combination with the cheesy writing and bad acting (and the sometimes good acting).

Nice video. A few side notes, The Sega Master System was significantly more popular than the NES in many European markets as well as South America, Brazil in particular. Also their success with the Genesis was never mirrored in their home country, even while it was outselling Nintendo in the US and European markets it was a distant third in Japan behind both the NES/SNES and the PC engine. Lastly and sadly a bit ironically, the Sega Saturn was actually very popular in Japan for awhile outselling both the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 and becoming their most popular system in Japan. They could never quite "put it all together" and have success in all markets at the same time.

It did not sell like the Genesis/Mega-Drive. Sega lost their prime spot in the stores and retailers weren't as keen to promote them. Like if Amazon suddenly bumped off a major company's products from their main pages today. It had a knock-on effect that eventually let Sony's marketing dollars fill the space. The Dendy 2 in 1 was sold in the U.S. as the Telegames Super Arcade. The Master System was big in the U.K. and HUGE in Brazil. In fact Tec Toy still sells models of the Master System to this day. The Master System is not region locked. I have bought every Sega console (even the Nomad, which is a portable Genesis). In Japan the Saturn outsold the Nintendo 64. While all of Sega's Japanese arcades have been rebranded, Sega still makes arcade games.

In the late 90s / early 2000s I owned a Dreamcast and I absolutely loved it! I know you pointed out that system was their downfall, but the graphics and sound was so so good!! Plus it has must-have games like Crazy Taxi and Hydro Thunder! Two absolute classics! Anyway, very fond memories of the Dreamcast and I still own one! 🤗Great vlog as always!

The Genesis is an amazing, indispensible machine for any retro gamer, but Sega badly sabotaged everything else. I think this video underscores how much Sega's wounds were self inflicted. Corporate infighting played a massive role in the Saturn's failure, the Japanese branch of the company utterly despised the American branch, refused all of their suggestions, and actively sabotaged them on several occasions. Sega of America didn't want to do the early US launch, but Sega of Japan refused to hear otherwise.

I thought the Dreamcast was great. Just that it may have been released too soon or too late. It was a little annoying having to wait a year to play the Dreamcast. I did get to play Sonic Adventure at ToysRUs pretty early before it's release though.

I really think Japanese nationalism and being envious of the American branch's success played a part in that. When Company Man mentions the Genesis selling well, he didn't mention it was mostly in North America and the Genesis didn't do too well in Japan. The US side absolutely had the track record to be listened to. It still amazes me that grown and supposedly well educated people can be so petty and childish.

@@sor3999 The megadrive also sold well in Europe and Brazil , during thr megadrive era sega did well to advertise their brand especially at and around football matches which sony has done for the last 25 or so years since the ps1 came out , strangely this good advertising dried up during the saturn era then returned during the dremacast era .Sega of Europe had their role to play in the overall success and failure of the sega brand .

Not to mention how late to the party they were with SEGA WORLD in Sydney Australia. Opened in 1997. As a Sydney CBD arcade gamer, the high point was around 1986 regarding number of venues but the video arcade collapse then arrived and by 1990 two thirds were gone. All of the major blossoming's in Video arcade attendance had come and gone by the time SegaWorld arrived. Left competing with it's own console market.

And well balanced. Its MIPS R3000 was powerful enough to compensate for some of the shortcomings of its somewhat experimental hardware and poor C libraries. More importantly, SONY eventually allowed developers to bypass those libraries to get more 3D performance, the opposite of NINTENDO's approach. And SEGA was now making machines so hard to code for that even their venerable arcade division was having a hard time of it.

The first SEGA product I had was the Master System, because it had the Ninja games which I loved. The next year that followed the Genesis came out, it was affordable for my parents & I was blessed in getting it with games like Altered Beasts, & Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. A few years later we were able to afford the CD attachment which I seemed to be the only one who loved those games, mostly the gun games with the Old West theme (Mad Dog). There was a Formula One racing game & a Star Wars game for the 3DX attachment I bought, but that was the end of SEGA systems for me because I had enough money to buy a Sony PlayStation then I never went back while my High School buddies had the lousy Dream Cast system which bombed rightfully so.

Kind of ironic that SEGA started making slot machines and now they're part of the Sammy Corporation. I'd say SEGA couldn't compete with Sony and Nintendo in the late 90s, the PlayStation was such a huge hit and Pokémon was a global phenomenon, and while SEGA had some success in some regions like Latin America, especially Brazil, the Saturn and Dreamcast weren't as common as the PSOne and the N64/Game Boy, not to mention that Genesis games were and are still pirated to this day, it's not uncommon to see a knock-off Genesis console in an electronics store, I even had a pirated Genesis which were still popular even in the late 90s. The arcade business was also a major factor, SEGA used to make cutting edge games for the arcade like Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 3, but the arcade business was declining when consoles and PCs became more powerful and could render better 3D graphics I'd say that as a game developer they're pretty good, especially after acquiring developers like Atlus, but their higher-ups made some weird decisions, for example despite the fact that the Switch has sold over 100 million units they haven't released many games for it, especially in Japan, and some of their projects like the Sakura Wars revival haven't been very successful, it seems like Sonic, Yakuza, Football Manager and the games they acquired from Atlus are the things keeping them afloat

I'm surprised you missed out the debacle that was the 32X, which was being developed by Sega America while Sega Japan were developing the Saturn at the same time but the 2 werent talking to each other. You could also add in the wasted R&D and prototype builds of the Sega Neptune, and the very limited release of the Sega Nomad (would have loved to have had that one). Shame they tanked though, I still play my master system and megadrive/genesis to this day.

I'm not going to watch it yet, but I'm going to predict Sega of Japan being assholes is one of the reasons. Edit: huh, I figured the pettiness of SoJ would have been mentioned because they were pissed at SoA being good at marketing in America and decided to undermine them by not telling them about the Saturn while SoA was making the CD and 32X. Also, not mentioned was the PS1 price announcement was immediately after the Sega one ended and was only the price and that was it.

There is a ton to get into when it comes to the rise and fall of Sega. A lot of it is covered by Blake Harris's Console Wars. It mainly covers former Mattel & Matchbox CEO Tom Kalinske's time as Sega CEO (basically around Sonic's Mascot Contest origin to the tragedy of Saturnday). My favorite part is that Sony CEO (and Former Sega Marketing Consultant) Steve Race's entire speech that fateful E3 was "$299." You can even find it on RU-vid. Many more details about that time period have come out since, such as the NEC/Hudson-Soft console PC Engine's failed US launch as the Turbografx-16 being prematurely taken out of the picture by SEGA (even though the PCE was a major success in Japan), Bernie Stolar's time as CEO (which was decidedly harmful for a company already in a bad situation), and the Dreamcast Debacles (in a reverse of the Saturn, it was reasonably good in the US but fared terribly in Japan). The sad part to me is that "Sega=Sonic" to most people, including Sega themselves these days, despite the plethora of potential in Sega's many abandoned intellectual property over the "ages."

The Dreamcast was brilliant. Amazing games, revolutionary technology, creative ideas (VMU, built-in modem, keyboard, light guns, fishing controllers, microphones, etc.) It deserved to be a bigger success than it was. Also no mention of the 32X debacle? That's showing some restraint. It's usually what people point to as the moment Sega screwed themselves.
