In today’s episode, I chat with Alisa Childers and Tim Barnett about their new book, “The Deconstruction of Christianity: What It Is, Why It’s Destructive, and How to Respond.”
A movement called ‘deconstruction’ is sweeping through our churches and it is affecting our loved ones. It has disrupted, dismantled, and destroyed the faith of so many, and this book can help you not only understand what’s happening but also stand your ground and respond with clarity and confidence.
Maybe you have a loved one who is deconstructing their faith, and you are struggling to know how to respond;
Maybe you are trying to understand the radical spiritual makeover your friend or family member is going through;
Maybe your relationship with a loved one has been strained or even cut off because of your “toxic” Christian beliefs and you don’t know what to do;
Maybe you’re experiencing doubt yourself and facing hard questions about truth, God, the Bible, theology and the gospel.
Some who leave the faith feel wounded by the church. Others feel repressed by some of the moral imperatives found in Scripture. For some, it leads to a custom-made spirituality. For others, deconstructing their faith leads them away from the truth into agnosticism, atheism, the occult, or humanism.
In this seminal book, Alisa Childers, author of Another Gospel?, and Tim Barnett, creator of Red Pen Logic, will help you understand what deconstruction is, where it comes from, why it is compelling to some, and how it disorients the lives of so many. You will be able to think through the main issues around faith deconstruction and explore wise and loving ways to respond from a biblical worldview.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

What Tim said about “faith crisis” & “foundation” is so spot on. I deconstructed when I was 18 years old. Peer pressure was a big motivator. The peer pressure stemmed from social media. Also, it didn’t help that I had been bullied & interrogated for my Christian beliefs in high school. I didn’t want to be on the “wrong side of history.” I had intellectual, moral, & emotional doubts. I also rarely read my Bible which made me an easy prey for deception. I thought I was seeking truth, but had an inkling/suspicion of Progressive Christianity. I eventually reconstructed at 20 years old after seeking out the Lord wholeheartedly & now I’m 21 almost 22. Pray for those who deconstruct. Many of them have very dark stories & have been misled.

@christamarie9981 7 месяцев назад
@@tryphenarose384my heart hurts so much for you. Your husband has twisted the scriptures to excuse his own sins. Even in the Old testament, God's law never states having multiple wives is ok. Just this morning, my daughter was talking about Laban giving Leah to Jacob rather than Rachel, who he worked for 7 years to be able to marry. Then he was locked in to working another 7 years to be able to marry the woman he originally wanted to marry. And then Rachel was barren so she gave her servant to Jacob to bear children for her. Later he returned to his father Isaac's land, and he only had spotted and striped lambs to identify his own lambs, but his sheep mated with his father's so that all of the lambs were spotted and striped. Also, as my daughter was giving me commentary on this passage of Scripture about Jacob and Leah and Rachel, she was nervously laughing about what a mess we create for ourselves through sin. It was a convoluted mess, and we ended up discussing how our sins blemish is and everyone around us. All of this had me thinking about all the men in the old testament who took multiple wives and concubines. God was not approving of any of this. These were simply accounts of what humans chose to do at that time. These stories are recounted that we can learn. We must pray and study God's Word to fully understand. Now that Jesus came and died for our sins, He fulfilled the Law. As Paul stated, What? Should we continue to sin that grace may abound? God forbid! Just because others did it doesn't mean God approves nor does it mean we should engage in those sins. I am praying for full clarity for you, for strength to deal with your current situation, for God to convict your husband of his sin, and for protection for you and your two sweet children.

I prayed like mad, went to counseling, sent gifts to my grandkids even though the letter stated no contact and the gifts would be unknown to my grandbaies. I sent them anyway. I sent books and wrote messages of love to the babes. One day after 2.5 years my daughter contacted me to meet up. That was June. We have spent lots of time together since and she came with her husband and the babes for Christmas! I still don't ask questions, I just love on them all and be as helpful and kind as I can. Yes! I would add a good book about parenting your adult children called “Doing Life With Your Adult Children “ by Jim Burns. While he doesn’t address this deconstruction issue specifically, he does advise how to approach prodigals and children involved in alternative lifestyles. It’s a great read about a parenting topic that is mostly overlooked but so very important for healthy adult child relationships. My eldest daughter is a prodigal and I found not taking the bait she may throw out to be very valuable in keeping our relationship open. I did finally listen to her explanations of why she walked away, however I believe it was so she could just go live in the world, like a prodigal. I gently reminded her of how the Spirit has used her without countering her arguments. I have seen a softening over time. Regardless, I am continuing to pray and love and entrust her to the Lord.

I totally agree with him. And this we should start believing the True Christ. Not the Jesus we imagine and make that image in our mind. and not the ones the Preachers might preaching. What does the Bible say? Follow him. What did he say... what are the commandments that Jesus says. What did the Apostles say? Does it lined up. Yes it does. God is righteous. God is not about unconditional love...where is that in the Bible. The best idea about his love is mercy. unmerited. Calvinism is a bane for belief where we have no free will. We live like non believers and think that Christ will forgive! No such thing when we think God is so loving. He is righteous. He will judge. Not by works but by his grace. If we think obeying him are works...we are absolutely deluded and think too highly of ourselves. But we could live unholy lives. Paul said Never. Your son is right.

It breaks my heart and I know I can only leave them in Gods hands and pray for them. I went through a crisis of faith 47 years at the beginning of school summer break. I was a teenager who was trying to figure out if I believed because of my upbringing or because of my own personal faith in Jesus. I struggled with it, had some older christians counsel me and I read my Bible more than I had been and God showed up and I knew by the end of that summer that I believed because it was true and no matter what my parents would do, my faith would remain strong. Didn’t call it deconstructing, just trying to figure out who God was and what I believed. I got my answer from his word.

These days, once someone labels something it becomes a 'thing'. Once it becomes a thing it becomes a trend. Once it becomes a trend it becomes a way of life... and then it becomes a way of "being". That's when it's is hard to break someone out of that cult like mindset and behavior. Luckily, when you were young there wasn't a label put on your crisis of faith and you recognized it as what it was...Just a crisis of faith without all of the extra baggage. It's the same with all of this gender Ideology and trans Ideology labels put on people and kids. Back in the day people were allowed to grow out of certain things and behaviors. Now they are telling kids if they have certain thoughts and behaviors that they might be trans and people are believing it because these activist scholars have put a label on it and it must be true because they are scholars.

There is jealousy and so much bitterness in their lives that they hate one of his brothers which started the whole “no contact” journey. I am sorry you don’t understand the new phenomenon of the “no contact letter”. Counsellors are telling these kids that they don’t need people in their lives that they disagree with and that they don’t “owe” them anything. I don't think that's always the case at all, especially if you actually listen to people and their reasons behind "deconstructing" their faith. I find it is often people who genuinely had faith and loved God - were very active in trying to spread the good news and live a Godly life, but eventually saw major problems in the bible, and couldn't reconcile things the bible says, to God being good. I personally am struggling with this, though I wouldn't say right now I'm not a Christian. I am still holding onto my faith. But for example's sake, how come the bible calls Lot a righteous man, when this man literally offered up his two daughters to be gang-raped by the men of the city of Sodom? Anyone hearing a man doing such a thing today, would certainly not be called righteous but a monster. I would especially imagine this amongst Christians. Yet since it's in the scriptures, and it's God Holy word, this gets a pass? There is no way a man who does such a thing, is a righteous man. This makes me then question what God considers as "righteous".
@TexasLyoness
@TexasLyoness 7 месяцев назад
@@tryphenarose384 Lot was still just a man. Not a single human is perfect. In the moment I suppose he thought it was a better option than having them assault the angels sent from God. His daughters also had their issues having gotten their father drunk to get impregnated. Reach out to God to show you and go to a trusted pastor or elder to help guide you. Often even in these situations a person is looking for a pass to exit so they can go on doing as they wish. Ultimately, if the person turns away for good he was never saved to begin with. With a true heart to find the answers, God will reveal the truth.
@tryphenarose384
@tryphenarose384 7 месяцев назад
@@TexasLyoness A righteous man. Lot earned the title of being righteous, not perfect. Righteousness does not equate perfection. So it's not a sin to offer up your virgin daughters to rapists, as long as you're doing the right thing by protecting the angel messengers of God? Who would be so powerful, that they could easily protect themselves, as you see in the story. Is that really the moral message here? His daughters would have hardly had a chance of being married, as in those days, women who were not virgins were wrote off as harlots, not being marriage material because apparently only the womans virginity mattered, not the mans. Lot single handedly would have destroyed their lives by offering his daughters to a group of men like that. I'm curious to know your thoughts on how two young women got a strong man so drunk and intoxicated, that he had no awareness of his own daughters sleeping with him? Two nights in a row no less? They fled to live in a cave so where did they get the alcohol? Especially in such an abundance, that their father became that intoxicated to no longer have any feeling of his body? Did Lot grab a bunch of booze before fleeing Sodom's destruction? The story realistically is incredibly hard to believe the more I look and examine it. Where in the bible does it say that a person who turns away from the faith, was never saved to begin with? Also, there are a lot of people I see in the deconstruction movement who go to their pastors and church leaders with these hard questions, get answers like yours and still leave the faith. The answers just make you question more. No offence.

Wait! Back up the train. Right at the end, Tim said that if you're dealing with people who do not believe that Scripture is any kind of authority, then giving them verses will not avail. I'm guessing at this point you need to ask what you're trying to accomplish with that person. Placating can be accomplished by nodding in agreement, but salvation cannot. The Word says, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." Romans 10:17. There is no other way. Yes, one must take the emotional temperature of the moment, and perhaps save the "meat" for another time, but avoiding the Word of God to avoiding offending the listener will accomplish nothing. Time is short, Becket. We're in the End Times, and Biblical prophecy is being fulfilled, all around. I surely do appreciate this channel.

You really need discernment on this issue. Sometimes praying is the best thing to do. Saint Francis of Assissi is credited w/ saying, "In all your ways, show Christ, and if you must, use words". That always really struck me. Christians can in some cases do more harm than good by throwing a bunch of scripture at people. Remember the word also says, "The letter of the law kills, but the spirit of the law gives life". That is the type of profound idea that Francis of Assissi was communicating. You can drop scripture subtly in paraphrased form sometimes, w/out a person even knowing they are being preached to. Scripture and Christianity is still so baked into our culture, that people say scripture quite often and don't even know it. I used to point it out when they did. That's a wonderful way to witness to someone w/out seeming to preach, because they are saying it, you just pointed it out. I always get this pleasantly surprised look when I have pointed it out. It's like they got a gold star by accident.

Unfortunately many people link their personal trauma with family, or with church people, with Christianity. So they think that in order to forget their trauma they have to reject anything that reminds them of their family or their former congregation's teachings. But ultimately It's just an excuse to not walk according to Christ. It's very easy to deceive ourselves and to make excuses for why we sin, or why we are not seeking God above all else. Sometimes we do experience moments where we question the things we have been taught. But usually the reason why we "avoid God" is because we have secret sins in our lives that we do not want to let go of. And deep in our hearts we know that we cannot pray or study the bible sincerely when we are hiding sins from God.

Deconstructing is traumatic for people and they don’t typically want those feelings. If you’ve ever questioned your faith, even if you haven’t totally walked away, you’d see how it’s not necessarily just people who “want to sin” but rather people who struggle with understanding all of it. Maybe you’re just not a very deep thinker. But if you are a very introspective person this is very possible to happen. Don’t be so quick to make a judgement.
@Logic807
@Logic807 7 месяцев назад
@@EpicShotz2 I am not sure what is the term deconstructing, too fancy a word. Perhaps backsliding? I am perhaps one of the worst kind of sinner, looking good on the outside but full of adultery and …. (to the point I did not think it was sin) I question God, from Adam and Eve ( what a cruel God) and everything, the usual stuff and probably more. I listened to Bart Erhman. Strangely from Bart, I begin to trust the Bible though not in the inerrancy. I copied scriptures into my notebook. And looking at Science, it is so obvious that there is a God, I just cannot understand why when the evidence so loud and clear. And then while copying, I heard something that unified the Bible, at least to me. Yahweh is the same in the OT, and as described in the NT. In fact the revealed truth, more awesome and I begin to realise the Fear of God. While things were dancing…gentleness I felt, I had more fear realising what Jesus was saying. Nevertheless, to me it is evidential faith not blind faith. Work on the understanding that the Gospels tells the truth. The resurrection is real .. why? Not feelings…and might I say work on cold hard truth. On hindsight, I feel sin is about rebellion. We cherish our sins and not want to face the truth of ourselves and then God. We eat food from idols, idolizing others. Concerning abuse and trauma… I don’t know, I can think of examples. I have no answer, but in this case, I believe God is righteou and I centre on his resurrection because so many things I do not have an answer.

I'm trying to remind myself, rather, asking Holy Spirit to remind my spirit about Acts‬ ‭16 : 31‬ ‭-> They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-you and your household.”

We pray they return to the Lord.. it is hard to be in this position after devoting our household lives jobs and marriages and dedicated our children to Christ .. watching them be baptized and attend bible studies .. prayer and watching and waiting as they live out their adult lives .. definitely leaning into the Lord for this .. mom.

Children never forget the faith that they are taught. It is a seed that has been planted in their hearts. Believe that God is still present in their lives, and that He is working in their hearts, even if you cannot see it. If you have prayed for their salvation, then God will save them. He is faithful. As young adult, I had to go through many years of making mistakes, and living life under my own terms, before I finally reached a low point in my life where I realized that I couldn't continue any longer without turning to God again. During that time I never forgot God or stopped believing in Him. On the contrary, I believed in Him more than anything in my life. But I was hiding sin in my life, and it was a heavy burden on my soul, and I was afraid to get closer to God. In my case it was sexual sin. I am single, and have never been married. And I was extremely lonely and worried too much about not being able to find a girlfriend or wife. I didn't want to wait for God's timing. So I spent many years trying to fill that void with casual relationships. Finally I had to repent of that immorality and stop worrying about that part of my life.

21:00 SUCH a good metaphor! The countless deconstruction stories I've heard have all been without objective truth as a measure. They do often feature people abusing the scriptures, and then see those people as evidence for why the scriptures are false. Subjectivity and emotionality cannot make good judgement for what is true.

I don’t ask her anything about beliefs I just pray and listen to her so she is still talking to us and I’m confident that God knows the way and that He is kind and merciful to us the wicked and ungrateful Luke 6:36 and we need to be also to those we love and desperately want to see saved. I just got through listenning to Melissa Dougherty interviewing the same two people addressing the same subject and loved it. I am thrilled to prepare to hear your interview to the end, too, so, my comments here are "prior to listening'. I am, I think I am, a steeping deconstructionist for Jesus. I find you upping Christianity's relevance by simply attempting to/meaning to/daring to address the subject. It takes holy chutzpah and courage to do so.

Okay, I just listened-to, and enjoyed, it even more-so. I appreciate Alisa Childers referring to what's occurring between Christians and their partisan politics as a marriage. As a former EMT, I appreciate her scenario of a first responder beating on the chest of a near-fatal cardiac arrest victim being easily misunderstood by radicals passing partisan knee-jerk judgments without knowing all the facts. I am/was guilty of posing a rejection/guilt trip onto my Mom at one time as if HER version of Christianity was my biggest reason for choosing to dance with the church world's deconstruction. If I could take it back I would. The Lord's convicted me since. Now, I'm not feeling the admonition to use 'reform' over the more raw, fun, realistic term 'deconstruction', which seems a lot sweeter and paced than 'demolition'. Though I disagree with Tim's outlook on deconstruction and his judgment of it, you brought-out a side to Tim Barnett I think is paramount to helping Christians remain regarded as relevant as this ball keeps rolling downhill.

Hey Becket, I really love your show and the discussions you have! I’m a college student, super interested in discussions on Biblical theology. I would love if you could watch and provide your thoughts/questions in discussion with someone on your show about the PBS documentary called “The Black Church”. It’s a documentary about the historical evolution into the present of part of the American Church, the Black church. The Black church is an American cultural church tradition made up of the African American community, originally forced to develop separately due to slavery and racial segregation in America’s history. I think it would be great food for thought to have discussions on how the church should respond to racism, division, and participate in the hard work of developing racial reconciliation or Christian unity that allows for cultural diversity and Biblical social justice. It’s a great documentary to see even if you don’t discuss it on the show! I don’t agree with all the theological perspectives on Christianity in the documentary, which would be great to discuss. Some of the theological perspectives I do agree with, and the historical narrative is pretty accurate and would be great for discussion.

I found Rene Descartes "I think therefore I am" the best way to organize my thoughts when interacting with culture. This means I'm going to look inside myself to determine what's true instead of to the bible. This is the foundation for the enlightenment, the origin of all modern thought and helps me define deconstructionism. I also think its important to judge the bible by itself. St Thomas Aquinas and St Augustin did this with a list of creeds. Otherwise we're just talking about one culture verses another, i.e. "Trump and guns." (full disclosure, I'm Canadian lol). There is definitely a fear people can experience when walking away from their faith. I think this was the motivation behind Friedrich Nietzsche famous quote "no fear because there is no God" His dad was a pastor and he knew the bible well. I feel compassion for anyone in this place. Nietzsche also died mumbling bible verses on his death bed. Nothing conquers fear like the peace of knowing Jesus. Maybe a great prayer for anyone in this place is Hebrews 4:16 "Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy." There is no peace in this world like this confidence. Lots of love.

Descartes’ “I think, therefore I am” had absolutely nothing to with “looking inside yourself to determine what’s true instead of to the Bible.” How about you actually read what he wrote and read what scholars have actually written about Descartes instead of just making things up that sounds good to you? Here’s something to get you started: the great Christian philosopher St. Augustine came up with basically the same idea as Descartes. There is nothing “anti-Christian” about it.

Faith is not blind. When faith is simply believing without firm foundation, sooner or later, you will stumble. Work on evidential faith. Concerning experiential faith, supernatural.... i think this is the most dangerous when not grounded. For many seek the experience without wanting the holiness, not wanting to be led. In fact they want to use it, but not being led by the Spirit. You seek it, and you may get it...but it may not be the right spirit. Just saying the name Jesus when you are making the image of yourself in Jesus will be very dangerous.

Excellent interview. "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us." (1 John 2:19) I think many "fall away" because they never began with a deep conversion experience involving full repentance and making Jesus "Lord". And that is often because of the dumbed down, "seeker friendly" preaching of the modern American Church. God, help us!

ca. 20 min. "truth makes a difference in diagnosis" not just truth, but also love. The example of what that girl said, "saying someone's a sinner is abusive", she didn't look at the motivation but for the effect, and that was her problem. Being abusive is (obviously) wrong, and an abusive person can call someone a sinner and it will be _true_ but still without love. But saying someone's a sinner _with love_ and _out of love,_ that is saving and caring. So it's the love that makes the difference in diagnosis, next to the truth.

Thank you so much for this video, I’m still new to my faith. Full disclosure, I’m struggling with it, my sticking point is the ‘threat’ of Hell, I want to feel love, genuine Love in my heart for The Lord…… but my brain keeps asking the question ‘why threaten?’ It feels like ‘free will’ is not real. It’s either ‘love me or or I’ll hurt you for eternity’ and I want to love not out of fear…… I’m obviously missing something, but I’m not seeing it at the moment, I’m going to keep trying though.

My kids have rejected the faith. It’s nothing deep. They just love the world and don’t want the cost of discipleship. Jesus said the reason for falling away is loving darkness more than light. Darkness is mainly sexual sin. Porn and homosexuality have corrupted this generation. I ministered to hundreds of kids when my children grew up. Virtually all have rejected Christianity. There are some elements of institutional Christianity that need correction, perhaps not deconstruction. There any number of key words in the Bible whose meanings ( nope, I'm not talking about Scripture relating to sexuality ) have been corrupted to reinforce the notion of an elite priesthood. Everything from words related to giving, the obfuclscation of the word 'worship', the meaning of 'church', and the use of weekly sermons when Jesus said to let no one call you teacher, etc. The local 'authority' model is what has led to a divided church, pastor worship, and unhealthy hypercharismatic doctrine. I beleieve God inspired me to write The Catalysm of the Kingdom of Heaven to establish an essentialist, but still moral, priesthood that I believe upholds orthodox doctrines very well.

I hope believers will not take the label “deconstruction” with all the freighted associations the panelists have attached to it (postmodern philosophy, critical theory, enemies of the faith, etc.) and apply it to those engaged in a sincere, honest, respectful questioning of their faith. There is already so much antipathy to questioning and so little tolerance for doubt in the church. Many, many people revisit their beliefs without any ill will toward the church or individual believers.
@TXLogic
@TXLogic 7 месяцев назад
Seriously. It’s an absolutely dreadful, ill-informed discussion whose underlying premise is that “honest” questioning can only lead one to the simple-minded brand of fundamentalist evangelicalism *they* espouse.
