The chokehold Dumb Dumb had on the kpop industry back then. I remember people made fun of the maid costumes and so many kpop groups danced to the song. It was that iconic. One of the reasons I like rv is bc they sang live in their rookie days. When they sang live at awards shows while doing that hard choreo, it was so good! and yes rv never missed with their discography. it's just a matter of preference. I'm so excited to see you on this journey of learning more about rv! thanks for the reaction!
RV definitely has top tier discography (for me, the best for girl group). Please, dive into them. I assure you they never disappoint. You'll be amazed.
@@stefanianoto4372 girl ahree with u so much new jeans are the only group in 4th gen that fits my standards (after being a luvie for 4yrs) their songs are so amazing the harmony is so rv
Be Natural was that remake that I wish they released later in their career (around Bad Boy era maybe). It was so ahead of its time! And people often forgot about Be Natural since its only a remake of S.E.S’s original, but really they could make it pass as a comeback title itself no joke. Truly the right song at what I felt the wrong time. Still, it’s one for the books 🫶🏻
I agree. Be Natural still slaps to this day. Red Velvet releasing their remake around Bad Boy or Psycho era would have been great, also helps if they still keep Taeyong as the feature since NCT has also already been established.
Fun fact about Automatic: Obi Klein and Charli Taft, the writers and producers of the song, said in an interview that the song was structured around Janet Jackson's Got 'til It's Gone. SM had sent them a practice video of the girls dancing to Got 'Til It's Gone and told Klein and Taft "okay create a song that matches this dance" so they created Automatic with that dance in mind and with the same BPM as GTIG. I had always felt like Automatic was giving very Janet Velvet Rope era so hearing from the producers' mouths that it was derived from a Velvet Rope track was so validating. To this day, Automatic is my favorite RV song.
Thank you Caitlin for another Redvelvet video. I'm a blink and have been a kpop fan for about a decade now, and I can confidently say that there will never be another Group that will come as close as Red velvet in terms of iconicity, Relevancy, and Musicality. Talent is just another subject we'll cover when the guide video drops. But Thank you for an amazing reaction.
4:03 Irene (english pronunciation) is correct, but people were probably correcting you based off the Korean pronunciation, but the English Irene is correct too. Girls Generation has a Yuri, but Yeri in Red Velvet is "Yeh-ri" but the R is not an English R, but the korean/Japanese R that's a tap of your tongue on the roof of your mouth (like when you pronounce Bo"ttle" or Li"ttle")
Automatic was so ahead of its time, if any gg released that now it would be #1. And btw, they do a lot of r&b their mini albums and albums are SO worth to check out, especially "The Perfect Red Velvet" which has been highly praised by k-pop fans and music critics.
RV officially debuted in 2014 as a 4 members group, Yeri was supposed to debut with them all along to make them a 5 member group but she didn't bc she was too young at the time & there were laws that prohibited minors to work at a certain age in SK. She officially debuted and joined the group in 2015 with their cb Ice Cream Cake and actually received a lot of hate and backlash for it :(. But everything's better now, she's very loved by reveluvs and the members 💗
It's confusing that Yeri didn't participated in Happiness because she's too "YOUNG". Yeri was already 15 (16 in Korean age) when RV debut and there are a lot of kpop idols that debut much younger like Krystal, Taemin, Minzy who are 14 when they debut. Right now the age bracket of kpop idols debuting are getting much more younger.
@@rubenmagonciajr.883 there are a lot of rumors saying that lsm wanted red velvet to be a nct type of group, adding members along the way, but they saw how much hate yeri got so they stopped there
This has made my day. The way you hadn't seen their velvet roots yet wow, this is so great. And can you imagine a group debuting with Happiness AND Be Natural? And then Automatic AND Ice Cream Cake? Like...... then their first full album has DUMB DUMB title track? You seeing baby TY Track here. Priceless. And in the future... the bsides... I'm so happy.
Fun fact, Yeri is actually in the Happiness music video. She and other female trainees from SM were in the beginning hidden in the flowers at 5:28! Yeri is the one directly in the center. She hadn't been added to the group yet. She didn't get added until March the following year.
I've had Dumb Dumb as my ringtone for like 6 years, and even with 28 minutes to prepare myself I still jumped when the MV started and went to grab my phone. 😂😂
Thank you for this reaction! "Irene" is just Irene like the american pronunciation. Sorry for whoever is telling you otherwise lmao. Not sure why they are saying it's pronounced differently. There are a number of times in their vlives, LevelUp project, interviews where they pronounce her name as "Irene". Even Irene herself pronounces her name like "Irene" LOL.
TY TRACK TY TRACK! That stage with Seulgi and Taeyong was a reeeeally short one, iconic and amazing, but not too too much because it's simply too short xD but there are quite a few collaborations between the Neos and Red Velvet! Joy did a Christmas song with Doyoung (her same-age bestie, they're hilarious together!!) and an OST with Mark, while Seulgi also joined Mark on a performance/song for "High School Rapper" and featured on one of Taeyong's self-produced songs! Yeri did a cover of the Trolls OST "Hair in the Air" together with Renjun, Jeno and Jaemin for SM Station, which they also performed on the SMTOWN live stage. Most of the Neos (like the smrookie boys) trained together with Red Velvet members and thus they're pretty close or at least very friendly with each other.
Happiness to RV is just like Black Mamba to aespa, Chewing-gum to NCT DREAM. It is the official debut, but only with one single. And the first mini album came out after the singles.
Saying “Irene” like the English name is totally fine and probably how they expect English speaking fans to pronounce it. Irene, Wendy, and Joy’s names are all pronounced slightly differently in Korean just due to conversion of English pronunciation to the sounds the Korean language but that “Ai Rin” pronunciation is meant to emulate the way English speakers say “Ai Reen” Long story short, saying Irene how you were saying it is fine and, in some ways, more correct to the goal even if it’s not how she and other members/people always pronounce it
Actually, up to this date, it's still a mystery why Yeri was added late into the official lineup. Some says Red Velvet's concept was going to be like NCT which they will add members each comeback with a corresponding color each because of SM hinting trainees in the beginning of the Happiness MV but it got cancelled since Yeri received backlash when she was added late into the group but some says that Red Velvet was going to debut later but since SM had some scandal/issue happened in that year, they had to conceal it by debuting Red Velvet, hence the MV being rushed and Yeri being underage did not able to make it to the initial lineup.
If you ask a lot of kpop fans, at the time we were all pretty convinced Red Velvet's debut was rushed to get media attention off of Taeyeon and Baekhyun's dating "scandal". SM rarely debuts anyone with just a single then having their second release be a cover of a super famous SES song was odd. The addition of Yeri made more sense balance wise for the group. It was like something that had been missing form their sound an dynamic was "fixed" after she joined. The way the members talked about her also sounded like she was always intended to be in the group but either wasn't ready at time of debut or was too young for the image SM had planned and had to hold off.
I am such a HUGE happiness stan, it released in 2014 and here in brazil was a huge festival due to world cup and i got to listen to this music video and then was one of the songs i played a lot at my house. It bring such a rollecoaster of memories. Also, i am always grateful for every content u bring to us Caitlin.
RV has my favorite gg discography. Their b-sides are REALLY good, there are precious gems in every album, you're gonna go crazy listening to their older stuff, i can just feel it!
13:31 I think they just sing differently. Like how they layer their vocals into the song makes it not feel like it was produced for them but stamped their colors on their discography making it their own. Plus their visuals/presence, choreo, and quirky/dark concepts so creative you don't really see from others (making them blueprints) elevates the experience making them worthy of the best kpop gg title branded to them by bb. Which is why fans are clamoring why sm wouldn't give them a US label or go more intl bc they are so talented yet still underrated in a sense that their force feels invisible
11:18 Red Velvet debuted with 4 members first, then they added Yeri later on because she was too young in 2014 for debut ( she would've been 12/13, or maybe also not ready for debut yet)
Their discography is so incredible aahh. Also I feel like Happiness doesn't get a lot of attention but I adore that song, it just lives up to its name you know??
Happiness is the oficial debut of RV as a group, later they added Yeri but she was always part of the group. If you check in, the beginning Yeri is showcased in the MV intro
Thanks for choosing to take a deep dive on Red Velvet. Thanks for loving them. they are really really amazing vocally and concept wise. they are very talented!!! thanks for appreciating them!!!
I have to say, if you like Automatic, you’re gonna FLOAT AWAY to Kingdom Come and Hands Locked, Eyes Locked 💖 This is so fun to watch as one of their predebut fans, glad to see someone else enjoy their iconic debut years.
ahhh yeah love that you deep dive into red velvet, they are the gg that got me into ggs in kpop, before it was just boy groups, red velevet have a special place in my heart. thankyou caitlin. you do you and be happy
I'm so glad you enjoy this journey so far! As reveluv since happiness era, i remember have the same reaction as you at the high note from wendy. It is so iconic. Be natural and (ice cream) automatic and dumb dumb back to back is giving full serve of red and velvet and it's the beginning of their career!!! Legendary moves. I'm so excited to see the next deep dive ep! Have a nice day and keep healthy 💜
We stan rv because Although we don’t like all of their tracks, we can respect that dedication they have to spicing music up. This is why there are many who try no concept concept but rv remains the longest standing group to ace it
A world tour hasn’t been *confirmed* confirmed but it was in an artist plan for 2023. Their concerts in Korea and Japan are happening in April so hopefully we know soon!
damn, i remember when be natural came out, i was all over taeyong and all the smrookies since BEFORE red velvet debuted. i wish i could go back to these times. it was such a great era.
You have no clue how excited I am for this!! Your wild side reaction and Birthday album listen are some of my favorites and I go back to them all the time
In case you didn't know cait, in HAPPINESS Yeri wasn't in the video coz she wasn't introduced into the group until she turned 18. So the lil pink gummy bear thing in the MV was to represent Yeri. "ICE CREAM CAKE" was yeri official debut into the group for the public if im correct (reveluv's please correct me on that if im wrong)
Idk if you're doing guides but I recommend for you to watch some especially the [(Un)helpful Guide to Red Velvet | EARLY 2021] video to really get to know each member and basically about the group! Thank you for doing this video, you always made my day 💗
yeah be natural was in one take.. at least for each scene. I remember the behind the scene video of it with joy and wendy running around behind the camera and wendy was carrying her chair so when the camera pans to her she'll be sitting on the chair as choreoraph😂 Red Velvet debuted as 4 members, Yeri was added in 2015. there's a lot of speculation regarding her addition, like she was too young before so she was added later, or that RV was supposed to be a rotational group but when rumours and yeri was added there was a lot of people against it so they stopped with just adding Yeri. SM never really revealed any reason just that she was added, but Red Velvet considered Ice Cream Cake as their debut song and the members knew Yeri since she's been a trainee since she was in 5th grade and have lived with the members at the dorm prior to debut. (a little fact: for Automatic MV that was the first time Yeri wore heels.. that's how much of a baby she was then😭) 2015 was such a great year for them I remember knetz be callin them a flop/failure group or a cover up group bcos Happiness and Be Natural was released around the time SM Artists were leaving their groups/filling lawsuit to end contracts. Then RV came back with Ice Cream Cake, The Red, and Wish Tree. Irene is pronounce as "Eye + Rin" and Yeri is pronounced as Yeah + Ri. Hope that make sense tho
Ooh, these are my girls, my lovely Red Velvet. I'm saying this before to watch your video - Dumb Dumb is in my top3 RV's songs and I hope, I really hope you'll like it too. Anyways, I'm glad and happy with your Red Velvet journey. Thank you 😊 I'll come back after watching this episode of Deep Dive 😉
i love their debut song “happiness” with all my heart🤧 idk smth about this song makes me happy😄 and i remember mark and haechan reacting to mv when it came up, they were such babies😆(pre debut)
