the sword is human will. The arthurian chronicle represents human will triumphant over everything. Villains also wear swords, but if it's not used in the right way, it can only take you so far. That's why main characters are able to grow out of their old ways and become the mightiest of them all, when you hold your will with true belief in yourself (thus in the divine in each of us) you become imbued with potential to grow, that means power to overcome any external obstacle in order to connect yourself to the divine.

And the double edge symmetrical sword represents master of both worlds, spiritual and material.

I always thought they were over represented. Spears were more common for many more hundreds of years. Also, I wonder if a rifle could fill the same narrative role in a modern movie.

there is something personal about the sword that a spear doesnt have, swords being more sidearms in history, more common as the weapon of choice in duels, and mastery of taking far more skill and effort. you can wear a sword anywhere far easier than a spear id say a handgun is the modern equivalent to the sword. more often a sidearm than a primary, ease of carry, again more skill to use and lets not forget all the westerns and their single action revolvers. Many movies have the main hero use a pistol for the final confrontation or start the final battle with more weapons and end it with a handgun
