In this video we look at how to find, plan, plot and navigate legal green lanes and off-road trails. This is quite a complex subject so we can't cover everything but we have tried to mention the main points. Map reading can be difficult if you've never had to navigate off-road before, we think the OS Map app is brilliant and comes with many useful tools to help you enjoy your experiences and adventures even more, be it on a trail bike or a big adventure bike.
Below are some links which you may find useful and help you discover green lanes and trails, and help you stay safe a legal.

Thank you for this real informative guide to green laning. I’ve just started out in this journey and joined the TRF. I have to say their website isn’t the easiest to navigate or the Green map. I think I might have to invest in the OS Mapping as this looks to be so much clearer to plot routes. I’ve subscribed as I found you easy to understand and hope to gain further knowledge in the days ahead. Once again thanks 👍

Im now venturing into 'adventure' riding having sold my MT10 and about to place an order for a Norden 901 and my biggest fear so far has been how difficult it seems to plan legal routes. Ive watched a fair few videos and this I by far the most useful one so far. I will be taking your advice on the apps you use once I get the bike and will refer back to this for future use. Much appreciated. And there was some good ol Norfolk accent in there too! (Im just outside Norwich).

Being a member of the TRF and having access to the green road map makes it quite easy to plan routes, it's not the perfect solution but it works. I've just bought a Garmin Zumo XT and that is a right pain to plan and upload routes, certainly using Garmin's software, the OS map app is brilliant, very easy to use and has more uses than just biking. It only really works with Iphone tho, it's not as good on android, I bought an old iPhone 8 plus (first iPhone which is waterproof) to use on the bike and that has been the perfect solution thus far. Obviously riding with others is a good way to get around and find lanes or check new ones out, but it's nice to explore on your own sometimes, hope you've got enough info now to get out there - just message me if I can help with anything else. regards, Mike (from near Ipswich!)

I use my route app for doing routes on the road but after watching this I'm going to give osmap a go and see how I get on. Exporting hpx files to garmin shouldn't be a big deal. Good video for covering some of the basics. One small point about the green dots on UCR's ... all that means is that it is "Other route with Public Access" , a critical point for us green laners is that the "road" is maintained at public expense and these routes with green dots could be either public or private with or without motorised access, the list of streets or gazetteer for the county would be the only way to know for sure. I would just also say that the GRM is vetted by TRF rights of way officers for accuracy and that TW2 is in the main crowd sourced data inputted by members of the public (lots of errors and insufficient research). Ride safe.

I had a TomTom and it wasn't too bad to upload routes, it just didn't like the off-road sections and didn't have off-road mapping. My phone hasn't let me down yet, I have bought another iPhone just to use with my bike so it doesnt matter if the camera brakes on it.

Be aware...definitive maps do not indicate TROs so a route can appear legal when it isn't. Equally, the trail riders map doesn't show all trails...I offered an update to our area map coordinator but the map wasn't amended.

It depends on the map and the council, some do show TROs and some don't, in the video it clearly shows them on the Wiltshire website, Suffolk shows them on the map but I generally call them for clarification, always been helpful. Ive yet to come across a lane that has a TRO but doesnt have a sign at the end of it, but I'm sure there are some out there which aren't displayed.

Absolutely cracking video. I am new to doing the off road stuff and trying to find areas/lanes I can legally ride has been a bloody nightmare. You have opened the door to how to find and ride these routes. One question please, Class G Highways, can we ride them or not? Tried searching for an answer but its as clear as mud. Yes in short but it depends on the status, so does it have a TRO etc. My local council has a phone number you can call and they've always been very helpful, it's always nice to talk to a real person. This is one of the best things about the TRF, the Green Road Map makes it very easy to see what is and isn't legal, defo worth the sub. Thanks for the comments, appreciate it

Not quite sure what you mean. You can upload gpx files from other devices, there’s a link in the description to the OS RU-vid tutorial on the desktop version and the app itself, that goes a bit more in-depth. I have basecamp because of my garmin on my push bike, but find it a twat to plot routes and the 1-50 just isn’t enough detail for me, and it’s expensive buying the maps with birdseye

I was walking on the North Downs in Kent yesterday, there is a northern and a southern byeway here, the northern byway has been hardened with aggregates while the southern byway is soft and currently a series of mud pits. There were not many motorcyclists about they tend to ride on the public footpaths around Bluebell Hill and they don't use number plates. There is bridleway connecting the northern and southern byways, at both ends the bridleway sign posts have been knocked down and hidden in the hedge. Two motor cyclists came along the southern byway and went straight up the bridleway to the northern byway. They had those unreadable 3 line number plates. Even where there are byways for motorcyclists to ride along they are still breaking down kissing gates, stiles, fence posts and sign posts in order to ride illegally. Your message here 2 years ago was wasted, the motorcyclists will not play the game!
@twowheeledadventuresuk2739
@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 3 месяца назад
They aren't really motorcyclists, they are just scrotes. You get bad people in all corners of society, even walkers do lots of damage in winter when they stray off the footpath to avoid puddles and damage the surrounding areas. But if the majority remain responsible the human race might just make it. For now.

@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 I didn't know you were in my area on Saturday, I was walking on Sunday and saw your tyre tracks on the section between the tunnel and Shell Garage on Bluebell Hill and Lower Warren Road where the horse field is. This section is marked on the OS Explorer map as Byway, on Lower Warren Road it is signposted as Byway, but at the Shell garage it is signposted as a Bridleway. This is a bit weird so I'll have to let you off. The Byeway between the Shell Garage and Boxley has been permanently closed to motor vehicles, motorcyclists were cutting a deep groove in the chalk and making this ancient trackway difficult and dangerous for other users. Just behind the Shell Garage is the White Horse Stone a neolithic monument representing the centre and origins of Kent. The Byeway you took from the Shell Garage and the Byeway from the end of Lower Warren Road rarely get used by motorcyclists, occasional 4 wheel drivers like the challenge of that hill. Did you like the new bridge over the Medway North of Snodand? I take it you rode along the hardened section of the Pilgrims Way between Hollingourne and Harrietsham that I referred to in my previous post. You seem to like riding ancient trackways that have become long distance footpaths, the Byway sections are open to all traffic so you do not have a greater right of way than anyone else and your readers need to be aware that they cannot expect walkers to cling to fences and trees while they blast past (there are car drivers that do this on minor roads too). I hope you enjoyed your journey through Kent, you should have booked a chalet at Camber Sands on the Kent/Sussex border and gone to the beach, I saw you going past on the video.
@twowheeledadventuresuk2739
@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 3 месяца назад
@@richardpeel6056 something like 95% percent of the public rights of way network isn't open to motorised vehicles, so I always get a little disappointed when people try to tell those, that by law have a right to do, are somehow spoiling it for others whilst doing what they wish to do and that the taxes they pay pays for the repairs to the byways and unclassified roads that they use. I wish people wouldn't be so selfish and realise we have to share this tiny planet with others and sometimes the others wish to do something different and walkers already have the vast majority of the network all to themselves. I have a dog, I walk miles along public footpaths with him, see lots of evidence of other users on those paths because of their footprints and the dog mess they all leave and litter. Perhaps you should visit Kent CCs website and have a look at their definitive map which clearly shows which lanes in Kent are in fact byways open to all traffic and which are restricted, it makes it very easy to distinguish between right and wrong: webapps.kent.gov.uk/countrysideaccesscams/standardmap.aspx
