Great pattern and a fun 106 video sessions. Looking forward to either buying, or winning your upcoming book. My friend Bob Adams (no relation) currently ties for Dette and we used to fish White Clay Creek in Delaware with this same fly. Thanks for the great video and Happy New Year to you and family.

This fly is my absolute favorite dry fly. When I first tied this fly I took it to test it out on a local creek. All I had were several of these flies with me and I caught over 100 fish between 8am and 3pm, all on this pattern. What's also great is, when fished in larger sizes, it will portray a grasshopper, and when the caddis hatch is on, cut the tail off and skitter it across the surface like a caddis. It's a very versatile fly.

I always tie my palmer hackle in "backwards" so that the hackle fibers get longer toward the front of the hook. It's a subtle thing, but I think it helps the fly lay on the water at the right angle. Happy New Year Matt, keep the content coming.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 6 месяцев назад
Great tip! And if you pick your feather just right, you can sometimes palmer the hackle and keep using the same feather for the collar. Just take a couple extra wraps with the longer fibers. :-)

Great job Matt. I'd tag that bug a mayfly. That grizzly "rib", if the theory is correct, provides the illusion of a "buzz" of movement. Glad to see you took a turn of body material behind that palmered hackle "rib". That's something I learned reading the many articles by Dick Talluer in Fly Tyer, as well as Eric Leiser's "Complete Book of Fly Tying". By the way, the Dette's shop has a You Tube channel, it's excellent. Walt's fly you tied reminds me of Betters' Ausable Bomber. At first I thought your way of tying the "head hackle", cupped sides together, was how Betters tied the hackle on his Ausable Wulff, because I'd heard that method too. So I went to my Betters playlist to check, but I was wrong. He tied them the regular way but wrapped one at a time so they wouldn't slip. He also used one hackle to size and one a little shorter, if one broke the surface the shorter one would still float the fly 🤔he had a lot of opinions and theories. So I started to search the Ausable Bomber. On the Classic Fly Rod Forum I found a discussion on Betters' Bomber. One of the members also compared his Bomber to Dette's Delaware Adams! Saying the Dette fly was more refined where the Bomber was very "scruffy"! Very good stories on Betters scuffy, rough cut, "buggy" style of tying and how well they worked. You should read it, there's mention of Betters scruffy style being used in an exclusive fly fishing club in N. Carolina to tie Yellow Sallies. When I fished the Ausable and visited Fran's shop he told me to make my flies look buggy. That's what I try to do, on purpose or by accident 🤣 Thank you Matt for all your many videos and generosity. You're a gentleman scholar. Hope you and yours have a wonderful 2024.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 6 месяцев назад
Great note Joe! I do think I'm subscribed to the Dette shop channel but probably haven't watched any of their videos in a while. And I didn't even think of the similarities of this and Betters' Bomber but you're right. And both would probably work in similar situations. But really interesting to hear his philosophy of making one hackle smaller for the flotation. I've done that before, but mainly if I want it to have more of one color than the other. Ie, if I want it to be slightly more brown, I'd use a grizzly feather that is a bit shorter which kind of "hides" some of the barbs under the brown. Thanks for all the support these past years! Hope you and the family have a great new year too my friend!
@FlyTyer1948
@FlyTyer1948 6 месяцев назад
That fly should ride high even in white water. Besides offering high flotation, I’ve read that the Delaware Adams can be used for a hopper imitation, not just as a mayfly. Happy New Year! May your lines be tight. Almost 20K. wow!
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 6 месяцев назад
Great note Bob! And someone else mentioned that they'll even cut the tail off streamside and skitter it as a caddis. And thank YOU for all the support this year. And yep, should be hitting 20k sometime here in January which will be just a couple months shy of doing this for four years. I'm still happy enough with this growth rate. :-)
