Alterations in brain cholesterol homeostasis is increasingly being recognized as a potential contributor to neuronal excitotoxicity, a phenomenon characterized by excessive exposure to the neurotransmitter, Glutamate, or the overstimulation of its NMDA Receptors. This in turn, can lead to excitotoxicity causing neuronal injury or even death.
