Alterations in brain cholesterol homeostasis is increasingly being recognized as a potential contributor to neuronal excitotoxicity, a phenomenon characterized by excessive exposure to the neurotransmitter, Glutamate, or the overstimulation of its NMDA Receptors. This in turn, can lead to excitotoxicity causing neuronal injury or even death. Watch this short animation to learn more about the cascade of events which ultimately result in widespread neuronal death, and what happens in the human brain before and afterward.
This activity is supported by an educational grant from Takeda Pharmaceuticals and is intended for pediatric neurologists, pediatric epileptologists, adult neurologists, adult epileptologists, physicians or other healthcare professionals interested in developmental and epileptic encephalopathy, including Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
