Nelson is taking his last trip to Atlanta and to his hometown in South Carolina and experiences many flight delays on the way. Video by Nelson Sullivan
What amazes me about his videos, and these LaGuardia ones in particular, is that he’s talking to the camera as if he’s speaking to a live audience, or broadcasting to thousands of people - describing the empty airport, showing us the advertisements. Today if you record we have the option to Livestream, or record and then very shortly after upload so you know people will see it very soon. But Nelson when making this video has no idea when or if anyone else is going to see it, for all he knows it could be months or years down the road. And yet he talks to us so naturally as if it is being live-streamed. It’s truly incredible.
This was also what amazed me too. Not just that he's vlogging, but that he's somehow nailing all the quips and presentation stylings of modern vloggers without any of the same platforms (or really any proper platform). It's not just a home video with narration and editing, it's unmistakable a vlog, in an era when there weren't even blogs.
i noticed this as well...for he knows it may only be himself who watches the video later in his life..he was definately ahead of his time. he's a character that would surely flourish in social media today.
Yes exactly, some people have such a strong will power and belief that what they are doing is relevent or interesting even if its not very interesting. In late 2023 this uninteresting video becomes an incredibly unusual and special piece of footage, coverage of "early 1989" is pretty rare as it goes, as with anything before the arrival of streaming etc as mentioned in your comment. Not only is this video interesting as recent history, but the person talking to the camera addresses us in the same way and using the same narrative vlogging methods as our contemporary peers. A very noteworthy channel. Loving it!
it makes more sense when you consider he was planning on maybe using some of this footage for his public access show, so in his mind he really was being broadcasted to thousands of people
Kenneth Blake same here! I freaking love the 80’s I just want to go back! I have been binge watching these videos! This guy was ahead of his time with this! It’s so interesting
You were ahead of your time Nelson. Now everyone vlogs but they aren't as interesting as yours. Truth be told. Your videos are like noatalgia time machines.
*Nelson, if you’re reading this in the spirit world, you would despise the flying procedures many years after you died. Just the pure volume of things we have to go through with bags and security, you would be highly upset. We have a full society that wouldn’t suit your personality. You made the selfie cam great too and we appreciate all you filmed for us in the future*
I'm an outcast, So I deeply understand what you were trying to send to nelson... There's alot of stuff I can't do that I want to do, I don't even go outside. I don't have any "Friends" either. Things are just too bad. No one has any clue how bad things have really gotten, People need to turn the world around. Nelson was doing the type of stuff I'd only picture in my dreams.
Seems pretty much the same, put the carry on stuff to the scanner belt and walk through the metal detector and you are good to go. At least here in northern Europe that's my experience.
In America you have to take off your shoes and wait in LONG lines the size of those at an amusement park, and if you're really unlucky you'll get selected for "special security" and don't even get me started on that. If you get pre-approved for (Pre-TSA) like me, you'll have somewhat of an easier time. Notice at around 3:05 he said "it's a quarter til 8 and my plane leaves at 8:30" well nowadays you have to get to the airport at least two hours in advance.
He had a genetic defect with his heart which also killed his Grandfather at 41. This was filmed in Feb 1989, he passed on his favourite Holiday, July 4, 1989. He says some prophetic things in his final Tape dated July 3. He doesn't look too well in it and is clearly at times struggling for breath but what a wonderful final day to have. His dream became reality but unfortunately posthumously, Had he not of died, he would have already had a Cable show showing these tapes by early 1990. He quit his job to pursue his dream two days before he died. The guy is a Godsend and I love him 💕
By the Playboy cover in the news stand @4:21, this is in March 1989. When the airliner crowd finds these videos they're going to gush with excitement that someone was doing trip reports in 1989 the likes of which would not be seen until 2008 or so. This guy was way out of his time. That he figured out so much as one man a culture that would not form for another 20 years is just amazing. Edit: Ha! Feb '89 by the ticket and inflight mag.
5:38 Everyone will stare at me because of the camera!! Wow!! And to think 36 years later you almost can’t go anywhere without seeing peop going “live” or just filming themselves! I love Nelson even though I’ve never met him! I just feel like I know him just from his videos! I wish someone would make a movie or documentary about his life. I’d love to hear stories from friends and family….peop who knew him. Thank you Nelson for inviting us into your life, your world, your time capsule. Love youuuuu
You just didn't see video blogging like this in the 80s. It's not like you could post it anywhere. Nobody would get to see it unless they came to your house and watched long video of you just walking around. Cameras were big and awkward, all tape. No battery life. Its remarkable he was 20 years ahead of his time.
@@thesundog8833 yes it was my understanding that he was from a very well of family who gave him a trust fund. I think he also got used by his some of his friends for his money.
@@bobdabuilder6618 hmm I never heard that before. Though he did say his dad got sick and passed in the 70's so I wonder if that's why. Also check out my new Nelson Sullivan RU-vid channel and Instagram "Nelson Sullivan 4K"! instagram.com/p/CCqnANkJqo1/?igshid=r63gjmbccxk6
Unlike some of his other videos, this shows a lot of differences from 1989 to today. No body scanners. No online check-in. Smoking on planes is allowed. Pay phones. No way to kill time at the airport.
Good times but barely any places to eat or drink or to kill time. Just little kiosks to get a hot dog or a cold sandwich or a soda vending machine or water fountain. Now there's four stars restaurants and great bars. However times were more simple and friendlier for sure!
A few years before 1989 and likely there would be no security at all. Anyone could go all the way to the gate for any reason that tickled their little heart.
Once everyone was doing it he probably would have stopped.. the more interesting thing would have been seeing what he was doing today instead of vlogging
Best trip review I've ever seen. This is real not the airline promoting reviews today. Pre youtube gem right here. I usually took Eastern or Piedmont too but Delta was also in the mix.
Andrew Tubbiolo it’s not overreacting what a ridiculous comment would you rather your plane get blown up Just so you don’t have to spend an extra few minutes in a security queue?
I was 14 when this was taken, at that time my mom bought me a camcorder and I was recording everything left and right, sadly my videos ended up lost. I have watched all of Nelson's videos, many of them several times. I have to say Nelson was way ahead of his time, I wish the lord could of gave us a little more time, the thing's Nelson would of accomplished. RIP Nelson, If I am having a bad day I can always watch you and for some reason you make it much better.
It’s so crazy how you can love and get to know someone you’ve never met just from watching his videos! I was only 5 in 86. Nelson would’ve definitely been one of my besties if I was around and old enough in his era. Someone should make a movie or something about this wonderful man. I’d like to hear stories from his friends and family….peop who were really close to him
I like how unamused he looks thought the video haha. No one likes having to wait for transport. I think Nelson would hate all the shit we have to go through in the airport now.
Its fascinating seeing the clock tick away at 6:09, if kept going it would have ticked almost a billion more times up to this point that I am now in witnessing it on youtube
One thing I noticed was the amount of suits on the flight. Corporate ‘80s trench coats doing the hard intercity slog. You’d have seen that waaaay more then. One thing I don’t envy but I respect. Different times.
Average guy in the 80s: what is he doing he’s holding the camera the wrong way first of all and second of all he’s talking into it, Nelson: it’s called vlooging, I want the people of the future to see what the 80s are like
They could make a Black Mirror episode about someone obsessed with Nelson's video...the twist at the end is that they are all made recently in Hollywood and Nelson is an actor.
James Willett yes. Terrorist attacks became too wide spread in the late 70s early 80s so airport security became a thing. TSA catches less than 100 people a year. A massive waste of money if you ask me.
Guys, remember, there is a part 4 to this. The title is " the happiest nelson has ever been " it shows nelson arrival at Atlanta airport then being welcomed at dicks house.
Crazy how bored people would sometimes get especially if their flight was delayed for 2 hours. Nowadays people would be spending their time on the phone, tablet or listening to music. I myself would’ve tried to take a nap 😅
😆 he was very succinct. Hey come join me at 'Nelson Sullivan 4K' on RU-vid & Instagram for the release of Nelson's work remastered in 4K/60fps! instagram.com/p/CCqnANkJqo1/?igshid=r63gjmbccxk6
Seeing 1989 through a fish eye Lens... so damn amazing, he did video blogging before it was even thought of, that’s it he’s a time traveler case closed lol
Damn Iol I wish I could go back into the 80s and meet him at the airport and say here play some games on my phone XD I’ve always just wanted to see people’s reaction in the 80s seeing a iPhone 7+ he would probs be like, OMG WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? IS THAT SOME SORT OF BOMB! like what planet are you from kid, it lights up ? And you can play some sort of type of game on it that’s crazy, lol his excitement would be priceless
Sorry Nelson to inform you in the future of the three airlines you mentioned (Delta,Eastern and Piedmont) the only one thats still around is Delta lol. Eastern came back in recent years in a reboot but it just really has the rights to use the logo and name of the old airline. Its been too long since the original Eastern ceased none of the planes, equipment or employees are the same. It mostly only does charters right now, such as the infamous incident of Mike Pence's Eastern charter going off the runway at LaGuardia. As for Piedmont I think they were absorbed into U.S. Airways, who would be bought by American and absorbed into them in 2015. Nelson the future is full of large corporate conglomerates and mergers, even more than when you were around. Certainly more dollar value in them.
Can you start uploading two version of all your videos? One normal like this, and another one with voice over commentary of your thoughts, like they do on DVDs.
I wish I knew what date this was I remember when I was 9 years old in 1989 coming back to nyc from Florida vacation with the family at that same time at LaGuardia airport .
Is all the airport construction done yet at la gardea I wonder? Supposed to be heard may 2022 and demolished the last old remaining terminal wings as well heard done unless things have changed.
I love Atlanta. Crime has gotten really bad but where ain’t it? We always drove. When we go to Florida we would have to stop there and just going to Atlanta to shop. I live in Tennessee so it’s not to bad a drive.. Is this where Nelson is from or has family?
