If you want to buy one of the best 3D platformers in recent gaming memory, you can do that and also support the channel by buying it over at GoG with this link. af.gog.com/en/game/demon_turf?as=1678711979
Celeste was designed from the ground up as a speed game and did really well in the sphere since it became one of the most speedrun game of the last decade. The ingredients are - Syncing the cycles of moving platforms/enemies in such a way that they are always consistent so that you have no RNG, making a really precise movement system that can be infinitely be improved at over time and finally making a really good game with level design where you can approach things in different ways based on skill level.
Definitely can agree, Demon Turf is a really fun speed game. Holding the any% record for DT and the dev's previous game Slime-san, when it comes to speedrun stuff, they certainly know how to pull it off. Slime-san, as a 2D game, had more weird skips where we'd go out of bounds or do some sequence breaking, but Demon Turf's level design hugely incentivizes shortcuts, as you said. I can only recommend watching my (or any other) speedrun, it's filled with clever skips you'll see yourself thinking "Oh dang! I could've thought of this, woah!!". Pretty much all of your points already apply to our runs and routing it was intense. There are many variables and there are different ways to collect the needed items. I do it one way, the other person does it a different way and there is no way to definitively say which is the better way. Still, many good tricks and skips and weird stuff to woah the viewers. We're still climbing closer to that sub 1 hour mark, hoping to be the one to break it lmao Regarding the combat stuff: We basically skip all of those, haha And yes, individual level runs are crazy. We haven't submitted a lot of them to our SRC page yet, but it's very tough competition. A lot of it is posted on our discord, but trust me, a LOT of crazy skips you wouldnt believe are possible. I'm still holding almost every single IL time on the ingame leaderboards of the Steam/PC version and getting those without the ingame mods was a crazy task. I'll be optimizing as far as I can before I start using mods though. The devs are in tight contact with us speedrunners and constant talks on which skips and bugs to keep and which to patch and they absolutely love to see their game being broken. I personally talk to them often and they are very open, which is really great. All in all a very nice video on DT!
@@HorkSupreme Actually those are from some bonus optional levels that you can unlock that are based on older Mario levels. I think it’s a pretty neat homage honestly.
When you played the music with lyrics i thought "Huh sounds like Ye Ye .. but good. And then you ACTUALLY hinted at that and I jumped in my freaking Chair. Absolute Gold!
For those curious, the Ye Ye music is Playback by Nieve and you probably heard it in the Mandalore video since it is basically Anonymous Agony's soundtrack
Had this game on my Wishlist, but I'm always unsure about platformers. Like you said, the controls need to be tight and responsive, and nobody ever knows how to explain it. Thank you for taking the time to discuss the moveset and how it works. Really solid review.
It looks like a commercial release of a GZDoom mod. Someone will probably find a way to glitch the hell out of the combat and beat those sections in 10 seconds. Which is actually a good thing for weird speed games.
Thanks for calling attention to this game! I would've never known about it if you didn't, you're doing a GREAT job giving these games the exposure they deserve, thank you for making such wonderful content for us all!
Really liking this game so far! I'm only about 4 hours in atm, but the gameplay and level design feel well polished and very natural after playing through Super Mario Odyssey. My only complaints so far is that a lot of the 2D character sprites look like straight up butt, and also having the controlled character as a 2D sprite makes it difficult to understand your hitbox. Lastly, the red spinning grates in Mr Mint's Trials make me wanna break my controller every time with how strict the timing and precision is on them.
Indo what makes a speed game "good" is the community. Celeste is a good example, it is a platformer that on some level thought as a speed game, and it worked out mostly because people loved the game and wanted to run it.
@@ProbablyJacob theres this one, hell pie, and I cant remember the third. all I remember about it is the main character is a cat with a really long droopy nose
I guess this could be somewhat fun to try but I doubt it will be speed game. There are meeddling medicore reviews for this. No one else even suggests there is speed game potential.
I finally finished watching this video after 5 attempts lol. Started watching it past night and drifted off to sleep in my chair. Got up and went to bed, put this on again while laying down, fell asleep. Woke up in the middle of the night and was like oh yeah I wanted to watch a review on this game while it is on sale. Put it on and promptly passed out again. Woke up this morning and threw it on then got a call. Then put it on again and had to go to the bathroom then got sidetracked and started making a protein shake. Ffs. Finally I am watching it again and missing it again cuz I am writing this pointless comment.
I haven’t been able to find too many reviews and deep dives on it, but The Eternal Castle was a surprise hit for me. Would love to hear your thoughts on it sometime 👌👌
This game looks like a game I might really enjoy, there has been a big name indie 3D platformer since A Hat in Time. Also, Ratchet Rift Apart can count as a platform shooter.
You review many games I want to play so I keep leaving your videos for later so I don't see spoilers =( I still watch 30 seconds and give you a thumbs up though.
Man this looks cool, I wasn't aware it existed at all! Right up my alley! And nice coverage of it, really sold me. About speedruns, its like, i dunno, its down to luck really, it's all about the community showing interest, sometimes it takes a while, sometimes its super fast like Celeste. I'm surprised marketing hasn't started sponsoring speedruners for games like these that are sorta intended as a speed game, tho', considering how every single time a new big Metroidvania, Soulsy or Horror game comes out there is a lot of dumbasses going ''I saw someone beat this in 1 hour, wow, 60 dollars for that?'' i kinda get why they don't do it. Cause there's a lot of dumbasses online.
I noticed this game is imitating quite a few levels from SM64. I know the first one you showed was nearly a 1-1 copy. Is there a lot of that or is it just occasional?
I don't think this game will succeed as a speed game. The main reason being watch-ability. As you said the art style is divisive and as such people streaming speedruns will probably see a lower viewer count than normal. The lower view count will incentivize runners to not spend an excessive amount of time streaming it. 2nd thought I think the sheer amount of content makes it harder to have categories for Demon Turf. Example if you speedrun a level do you use any upgrades or just upgrades you could have up to that point or no upgrades at all? I could see an any% speedrun maybe being viable but the first issue of watch-ability still comes to mind.
The first level you showed gameplay of really reminds me of the first bowser level in Mario 64. Not accusing or anything just thought the resemblance was interesting. Edit: 6:27 tik tok clock!
I will say, fellow gamers, VA-11 Hall-A (AKA Waifu Bartending) is a really really good visual novel where you pour drinks to get different dialogue. It is currently on a Black Friday sale on PS4 (maybe other platforms too) for about $10. It is worth the money if realistic adult conversations sound nice to you
I have perhaps never encountered another game that interests me less in every aspect, from music, gameplay, graphics and setting. I can still appreciate the work that went into this and tell that it's most certainly a good piece of media and other people can find a lot of enjoyment with it.
There's a very thin line between making an homage and straight-up stealing. That first level shown isn't a love letter to retro 3D titles, it's literally just Bowser in the Dark World. Whatever positives there are to say, that's going to sour my opinions of this game going forward--now I have to wonder how many of those positives are actually from the devs themselves and how many of those positives were just lifted from other games by talentless hacks.
this game has over 100 levels are there are a few that are extremely obvious reworks and homages of classic platform levels. This is totally self aware and not "stealing". Its not like they thought you wouldnt notice, lmao
