The Epoch was introduced for young professionals. It didn't sell well but like you, I thought it was a cool design. I had one but someone else liked it more in the office and it disappeared. Pity. I may look for another one. Love the design and the weight was very nice.
Not a huge fan of the blue as its kind of pale. But I'll use it up then refill with something else. I'll probably order some Pelikan cartridges to have handy too.
I'm going to make a BROAD generalization here, but I'd say, if not rather OBLIQUEly, you have a GOLDen talent for finding some real interesting fountain pens 🙂 Enjoy your new find 😆😃🙃😊😇😉
No pun indented of course LOL. I never heard about this pen but I saw one as I was looking for a Pelikan with an Oblique nib. I got the 400 OBB but I kept this one on my watchlist. Its such a cool looking pen!
I think Montblanc made a pen with a similar cartridge “holder”. I don’t know if they still make it. It was supposed to be a traveling pen, I believe. Great find for you and another great in-depth examination of pengineering.
HI DB! Thanks for showing this interesting and unfortunately short-lived pen! The design is quite futuristic, which may explain why it didn't fly from Pelican. They are really famous for their more traditional designs. Might have sold better if from Lamy or Faber Castell, perhaps.
The epoch nib used the same stamping die as the older silvexa nibs, and may indeed at least on the steel nibs been using up remaining stock from the series of pens (gold as well). Over time the sled tended to rust, wear out and snap. Also on mine after using it for over a decade the cap liner wears and the snap cap retention becomes very loose and barely holds, to where if you cap it and jiggle / shake the pen the body drops from the cap
it seem that ink cartridges is international size 😊👍🏻 i recommend u, using Pelikan C499 Converter or Schmidt Converter K5, they fit nicely for Pelikan Epoch P361 fountain pen 🕺🏻🥳 PS, I bought that Pelikan C499 Converter just RM18.94 = $4.13 US dollars at Malaysia stationary shop
Nice find & review DB! The filling system being cartridge only is somewhat unique & not one I've seen before (that's not unusual). Another unique cartridge only pen is the Bic EasyClic with a somewhat strange way of loading the cartridge. It writes surprisingly well for such a relatively cheap pen. Since you mentioned it, I had to go look and found a P361 with a fine nib that will be on it's way to me soon. I also saw a different seller had one P360 with a broad nib left, a much smoother looking pen. The P361 will sit nicely next to my Pelikan Level L5 with a broad nib!!
I think I will be grinding the nib on this one as it just doesnt do it for me. A regular fine nib on this pen will be a great daily user. Hope you enjoy your new pen!
It’s not the prettiest pen, but it’s also not the ugliest. I’d rock that pen any day and be proud to own it. Good buy and thanks for sharing! I’m hoping I can afford me a Prlikan one day soon. That’s one brand of not really tried anything of but I so badly want one. But not one of their cheap pens like the twist, I want a proper gold nibbed Pelikan.
I have a version of this and like you said it is quite light weight but a con of that is the materials are thin. the clip especially is really flimsy, mine bent out of shape and there was no way to fix it. Nice review as always though
Would you consider doing (or do you know of) a sac-size and nib-size identification, finding new/used sacs/j-bars/nibs that will work & basic replacement video? I scored on an auction last month and got several purse pocket pens, including a lovely small black esterbrook that needs a sac & j-bar, a small majestic (sears brand made by a different company?) that needs a new sac & j-bar - it needed a new nib but I ordered some replacement #5 jinhao 82 mini nib units and pulled the nib that I think will work, the j-bar & lever still seem snappy & functional... a pale yellow celluloid Signet that just needs a sac... Or differently... I have a pocket black Bohler (looks like a thicker version of the Estie Jr I have) that I need to figure out how to take the broken piston rod & stopper out of and then codge together some kind of replacement, and a lovely sheaffer balance jr with a translucent amber striated black pinstripe swirl body with MOP flakes overlaid, back half of body and cap are both black with the same MOP flakes... the blind cap and piston still move okay but the stopper very clearly no longer keeps a seal, and I haven't been able to determine whether the section is screwed in or friction fit. Plus I need a new nib (and ideally a new feed, as the feed I have is damaged). I'm really struggling trying to wrap my head around doing the puzzling out what size/type parts I need and where to find them what sort of process to go through to most carefully attempt disassembly and decrease the risk of causing more (and possibly irreparable) damage. Not your channel niche, and maybe taking advantage of your amazing support of subscribers, but pointers to any visual or video resources you know of or ideas for where to learn more for amateur vintage pen tinkerers would be super helpful.
Grandmia pens is the first place I go to. He has a youtube channel and does all sorts of restorations and he's the first place I check if Im doing a restoration. After that there are pages out there dedicated to Parker, Shaeffer, etc that give details on repair and parts. This site is a pretty good resource as well vintagepensacsandparts.com/en-ca
I would really like to have a Pelikan at some point. What I want is either no longer available, no longer affordable, or can't find a place nearby to try one.
Second hand market might be the place for you. An M200 is a great pen and I've heard from many the steel nibs are very bouncy and some favor them over the M400 gold nib
This was interesting. Not chance for this to be remade now that Pelikan is owned by someone else, who already went into cheap mode by removing the M1000 translucent barrel.
Thats the plan. Sending one off to a nibmeister to review then off to the channel members for testing and if all goes well have them for people to buy. I'll have an instructional video to go along with it
Are you gonna share your STL files for the nib block? I’d love to print me one. You should make a knock block too for when the nib and feed don’t wanna come out of a grip section.
@@Doodlebud oh that’s cool! So you’re gonna make the physical products then? Not upload the files so people with the means can make them? That’s cool. I’d love to print one just cause it combines my 2 passions, fountain pens and 3d printing, but I totally get wanting to make a physical product you can sell and earn from. Perhaps I’ll try and buy one when I can and they’re available. I’ve made a couple fountain pen items I’ve uploaded to the various 3d printing websites and it’s always nice to see how many people download them and comment how useful they are. The 1 thing I’m looking forward to getting in the future that you also deal with is the laser engraver/cutter. I want one so bad. Your channel is like the most weird amalgamation of these weird hobbies and they’re all my same hobbies! I love it! Your channel is like made for me. lol.
Got my Pelikan 580 In Agate with a medium 14k gold nib from this same seller. The medium is very stub-like and it's also a cartridge converter. Sharp pen!
When I first saw the thumbnail I thought this was the Uniball Vision rollerball, which is my favorite since I was in high school. They have very similar styling and now I want this P361 😂
Cart only (no cart converter), is an instant deal breaker. CC is okayish but in general I'd rather not. It also depends on alternatives, I.e. I'm far more likely to accept a JP pen with a CC than say a Pelikan, as there are less alternatives.
Pause the video @2:35 , what are those marks all on the cap? Are they wear and tear or scratches on a new pen? I get its old stock but surely it’s not all marked up already is it?
Yeah definitely has a Lamy feel. Yup, same as on the Safari, Vista, AL, & LX. This one does have a nicer threading in feel when you screw it down. But its super smart to do it like that. Eliminates the issue of users not pressing the cartridge in all the way.
Its not magnetic, it has the 14K stamp on it, and its make by Pelikan who has been around forever and makes their own nibs. Its plated so doesn't have the "gold" look to it
I'm not sure I like the aesthetic of this pen, but I see this is again one of these "modern" oblique which are smooth but the line variation is a bit underwhelming for my taste. Congrats on your restraint!
I'm about 99% sure I will grind it more to my liking. I will give it some more time as there's no undo button for grinds, but it needs some more line variation I feel
I view the modern obliques as more of a unique aesthetic as opposed to a functional oblique as on vintage nibs. 5 deg or so with very little effort put in the modern nibs compared to the 40s-50s era pelikan nibs with a 15-20 degree grind in addition to proper profiling of the underside of the tipping
@@Doodlebud I'd be glad to see how you will try to do it, I have a 146 with a modern OB which I would also like to regrind but I am not sure how to go about it.
Like the design, pretty sure it's a good pen, it's a Pelikan, they never failed to produce good pens, but the no converter is a big issue for me. Sure you can always refil the cartridge but with time they tend to get loose and if you can´t find their model anymore you are with a useless pen
Another viewer said you can fit it with a converter. You have to fill the converter on its own instead of dipping the pen and filling it that way. I have a little needle end adapter to fit a converter to bottle fill it to make things easier
Thank you for the feedback. I use the needle/syringe for that same effect in some pens. I may well look up one of these Pelikan as I fond her to be quite beautiful in her simplicity.
