I love Chimney Rock. I was fortunate enough to live in nearby Black Mountain from 2012- 2021. I had an annual pass to Chimney Rock State park every year and loved to show the park ( which is spectacular!) and area to many friends and relatives. Some favorite spots were Hickory Nut Gorge Brewery right on the river but I fear might be gone. Loved La Strada in nearby Lake Lure. Also loved Rumbling Bald Park where we would always see rock climbers. I live about 75 min away in eastern Caldwell county now but I’ve been back quite a few times and I’ll be ready to come back as soon as they are ready for visitors. To anyone that’s not been there, it’s hard to describe just how special this area is. The antiquity of the rock formations and Hickory Nut Falls leaves you in Awe. The gorge itself is so beautiful. They will need our continued prayers and support to sustain them from a tragedy none of us could’ve ever imagined. When they are ready for visitors, please consider supporting them as well as Buncombe county and WNC. 💜
$100mm sounds like a lot of money to most people. But when you're here, you know it's not even a drop in the bucket. Chimney Rock is one town. One of over 100 NC & TN towns that are devastated. The path of destruction is ~500 miles long by over 100 miles wide. That's 50,000 square miles of destruction. We're all putting our lives & businesses on hold to become chainsaw crews and demolition cleanup crews.
I understand what you're saying, but our mountains are up to 6684 feet above sea level (Mt. Mitchell, highest peak east of the Mississippi). I'm about two hours east and in my mid70s. This is undoubtedly THE WORST thing thats happened here in my lifetime. Nobody is surprised when the flatlands flood, tragic though it still is, but at these altitudes??
I’m 20 miles away. This is worse, but still the second major flood we’ve had in 15 years. Also, Chimney Rock is a sliver on either side of the road through what’s closer to a gorge than a valley. There is no moving it. Also, the whole reason it exists is Chimney Rock and the scenic river.
Geology must dictate where people live, or don't live. People expect things that are unreasonable to expect. Rivers rage occasionally. Landslides move.
if it's not something that happens withing a lifespan memory it's hard to consider the danger seriously. If it's something that happens more regularly we have to be more proactive of course.
I feel for these people suffering, but there is a reason why the federal government wants documentation, especially after a disaster. I can give you one example everybody’s familiar with the COVID-19 pandemic. A lot of people filled out the proper forms and indeed needed assistance from the government. I know a lot of people who were laid off or let go and needed unemployment and state level unemployment wasn’t enough to cover the bills. $365 a week in Michigan ain’t enough to cover your bills if you have a $1500 mortgage. So when the federal government steps in and gives everybody $600 extra a week unemployment it helps. The problem is look at how much complaining there was about fraudin the middle of the pandemic when people needed help, the most fraud ran rampant. Fraud was so bad they had to extend the deadline for prosecuting fraud. So the government makes sure that when someone says I was affected by a disaster you got a document it. It sucks because I remember when my basement flooded 2 feet and I had to give the insurance company pictures and documentation I had to give the government pictures and documentation, but it helped prove that I wasn’t someone trying to commit fraud because make no mistake. There are people out there right now trying to commit fraud based on that hurricane. Plus, I’ll give you one more reason why we want this paperwork everybody wants to know what are you spending my tax dollars on especially those Republicans in North Carolina all the time say the government is wasting my money. Guess what the government has to be able to show this is what we spent your money on. Here’s the paperwork proving we spent money on this person . The only way you get that is if people provide documentation.
@@Fido-vm9zi Yes, they're focused on themselves. They're focused on themselves because of what they just went through! They get reminded of what they just went through every. single. day. If I was a business owner there, or a homeowner, I'd want someone who's gone through the same thing and filled out the paperwork got something out of it to come show me how to do it right.
@@pttpforeverchimney rock is just a short drive from where I am in Watauga Co. It took us 5 days just to get back cell service at our home. Our road was so damaged and we still had water running down the street for days after the storm, we did not risk getting out. With them all the roads are gone, period. Not sure how they think FEMA is to get there. For us we got out days later and met up with FEMA where they were staged and got forms filled out for our needs. We had to buy a generator, and had minor damage. We were taken care of in a few days. Still took over 2 weeks to get power and internet on our mountain. The whole area is messed up and still have neighbors with no roads or bridges and they have to walk everywhere.
That was well said. It really sucks for the people who are struggling through the crisis, but the government is going to be held accountable by the taxpayers and the opposition. This is where private donations (to the right organizations) can do a tremendous amount of good since they won't be under the same microscope.
the money to restore this area is probably going to be a problem. also the labor to do the work. meanwhile, thousands of immigrants coming over the border want to work. this could be a partial solution. rather than being housed in hotels with no jobs.
"Deplorables"?, "They cling to their guns and Bibles"?. What I see are the best people on Earth. Struggling, helping their neighbors, pulling together, and rebuilding. Sending another donation right now.
Just a bad deal for everyone…. The state of NC should fit the bill for road, sewer, water… duke power does the power lines FEMA offer loans at reduced interest Insurance companies offered flood insurance, if owner opted out, then it is what it is
Been going here for the past 7 yrs to celebrate my son bday on November but seems like this year wont happen 😣 hope everyone cen get the help they need soon.
" The most perplexing thing that makes me angry is the federal government is coming to help us" This man is your fifth column. look for a person that can handle that assistance without first criticizing it.
Horrible what happened here. I was in Asheville NC 10 days before the storm, had a feeling of doom and left a few hours after getting there. Was out for a week looking for a property to buy to move there. I guess I had a premonition. Watching parts of Florida still underwater after Milton 2 weeks ago, it's so much worse.
Okay, this is my opinion. They will help rebuild, well I don't know about people's normal insurance. I've heard a lot about flood insurance not being a thing there, since it normally doesn't flood there. So a lot of people will have to go through FEMA, it's just going to take time unfortunately. Like the guy said they don't have internet, roads are almost entirely gone with the ones that aren't I can imagine aren't stable, debris and congestion making traffic there insane. He talks about jumping through hoops and I wholeheartedly get it, it's frustrating when you have nothing your life has been unbelievably changed, but could you imagine zero hoops? Could you imagine the money given away to people who don't need it? People want to complain about immigrants getting our money as it is you don't think less hoops would exacerbate that even more? There are 6 states that were affected, yes North Carolina got the brunt, but even within North Carolina there are tens of thousands displaced, it will take time and there has to be checks and an order to it for it to actually be beneficial to the ones affected.
Why? Well, because they like to take your money, but they don’t like to give you any money! Also politicians really don’t care about what’s happening. It’s not their problem.
By the Biden/Harris administration mostly Harris sent it this time. Sad how she would give $750 to n Carolina hurricane Helene victims and send billions to Ukraine.
There were only 125 residents in Chimney Rock. They don’t have to rebuild the whole town. The State or the Feds could buy it and make a nice park along the river.
this river has never flooded like this! In 1996, there was a flash flood that took out a lot of the bridges, but nowhere near to this extent! It was very localized to the Bat Cave / Chimney Rock area only. Any area that receives 30 inches of rain in a few hours is going to flood, not just along rivers.
A huge bridge all the way through Chimney rock 30ft above the river should have been built a long time ago. A modern day board walk above the river. Build the town on the bridge overlooking the river. 100 billion dollars needed.
And a bunch will vote Biden some might vote Harris some might leave others might stay and rebuild still others might file for bankruptcy and others might cut their losses and sell everything some might complain that the election was rigged and others will say NO it was fair!! 😂😂
