In 2008 I started Jiu jitsu in Los Angeles in West Hollywood. I then met Choi at our academy and he was already a legend. His english was not great back then so he would just shake your hand and smile a lot. He would sit mat side before class and read a Korea Times newspaper then when class would begin he would fold up the paper, walk onto the mat & Choi Bar nearly everyone there. So lucky to be there for the early r&d days of the technique & so happy for the success of this technique which has been adopted wholeheartedly by the community.

It’s cool to actually see the inventor of this move. I’ve heard of this move for years, but never seen the person. Also, it’s cool how the bigger the sport get, the more innovation we’re likely to see.

He didn’t invent this, he may have popularised it, but he did not invent this armbar variation. You can see pics of this in Helio Gracie’s book “Gracie Jiu Jitsu” that was published in 2005 and this move was performed long before that as well. I’ve seen a pic in black and white of Helio doing this sub.

After thinking about it, this technique has the exact same finish as the spinning arm bar that's been around forever. The main difference is that instead of spinning toward the head and going belly down, you use leg leverage against the head to spin in the opposite direction to arrive at the same point. Very nice video thanks

Essa configuração com a perna por cima do pescoço me fez pensar que da para a aplicar o Choi Bar usando o Canto Choke como entrada.

Awesome stuff. Bernardo is is one of the MVPs of jiu-jitsu, doing a lot for the sport. Such a nice guy too. Met him in Oulu, Finland in 2013 I think. Seems like all the success hasn't changed him at all, which is a good thing.

Is the hyperextension of their elbow coming from your arms squeezing into your body, or your hips extending away? Another way to ask: Is the finish more like a razor armlock or a straight armbar?
@Mus4shi15
@Mus4shi15 6 месяцев назад
Your hips would extend forward towards their elbow. It's a regular armbar but on your side.

@camo5369
@camo5369 3 месяца назад
He didn’t really create this though. You can see in Helio Gracie’s book - “Gracie Jiu Jitsu” on page 206 “Armlock (stepping over head)” in which the Grand Master shows this armbar. That book was published in 2005, I can tell you, it was performed long before that as well. EDIT: it is the reverse choibar, the armbar stepping over head, a traditional Jiu Jitsu arm bar

That side control escape is, to be frank, pretty bullshit. The top guy will just arm triangle you if you even try that.

Man never ceases to amaze me how people think they’re entitled to make such statements, these are high level blackbelts, did it occur to you that maybe there’s something you’re not understanding about what they’re teaching you… 🤦‍♂️
