Actually canaries weren't put in mine shafts to sense gas, they were put there to die. Because of its size, the canary would be effective by the gas faster than a human would, so if it died, that meant there was gas and everyone had to leave lol

Miners used birds in the mines to tell if there were any poisonous gasses or any oxygen at all in the mine shafts where they were digging. A bird's respiration rate is 100x higher than a humans so the bird would die before a human would breathe in enough of the gasses to cause a fatality.

Actually Dan, the canaries were used by having smaller lungs than us so they would die from the gasses alerting the miners so they could get out safely.
