The difference between a producer and an audio engineer

In this video I'm explaining the differences between a producer and an audio engineer. Many people have asked me what the differences are, and if these roles really still apply nowadays on the 'modern producer'.
So we're comparing the traditional producer with the audio engineer and the modern producer.
I hope you will like my new animation style and characters, this might be something I will be using more in the future.. Let me know if you like them :)

+1 a producer orchestrates an entire project and helps an artists vision come to life. not send them a beat and say hey have fun with this.
@TranceCore3
@TranceCore3 3 года назад
Beatmakers are and can still be producers, because they are the ones selecting the sounds, as the producer over sees what is happening inside of the studio, the producer oversees what is happening inside of the virtual studio. There might be an instance where the beatmaker does not get to choose the sounds themselves, and just have to work with samples given to them, but even still, they had to decide the groove, and the tempo. Arranegment is a different topic. Arrangers know what their job is. So yes, Beat makers can call themselves producers. Producing a beat still requires decision making, whether you think it does or not.

Hi Tovasti, I am definitely going to continue with this season, but it will include many things which I am preparing and trying to arrange. (Including downloads of the multitrack recordings which I will be mixing this season...) The training program will be there as well one day, but it has to be as complete as any paid audio-college. This will involve a lot of work which I currently don't have. By the time I can run all of this full-time, I will definitely offer a FREE program.

So I am the studio owner and recording engineer helping make a 5 song EP that the singer/songwriter/artists/performer wrote 100% himself. Some 20/30 recording and mixing sessions later, I don’t know if I am entitled to a share of either the publishing (probably not, having not written a single word or note), or mechanicals from the master (which I am 100% responsible for, having chosen and physically operated every recording and mix decision, to the final master)...

Great job doing this video, but I differ. I have known many producers that can't mix at all, or record. That's why engineers will always be a big part of the creative process. It doesn't matter how much better plugins get, experience dealing only with transients makes you a mastering engineer. Experiencing with mics and rooms makes you a great recording engineer. One thing is that you have certain knowledge of how things work during the process, but producers most of the times don't have the expertise to handle that themselves. That's why most of the one man productions now sound bad in general, you need different ears that can work in different ways and they all convey & nurture the project in development. A really good producer knows this, he can make a great team of engineers, arrengers, etc... so that every work he does sounds great. So many details and that's without even talking about the room or monitoring system in home/amateur studios. You can't mix/record/master those things that you don't hear. Really great video, but I do differ in what actual "music producers" are and need to get their feet closer to the ground to what they can really do.

+AwesomeBrilliance More information required. Are you using a condenser microphone? If you’re in an untreated room, it’ll be especially noisy because it picks up everything. It could be self noise from the interface/preamp you’re using. How far away from the microphone are you? Depending on the microphone, this could be 5-10 inches. If you’re further away with the gain turned up higher, you’ll probably get some echo. Maybe you’re getting interference with the cables, or the cables are poor quality. Finally, is your mic shit-tier quality? Are you using a USB mic? Could be anything.
@AriJordan
@AriJordan 4 года назад
Have you worked with a producer in which is on a label or a person who claims to be a producer? Every real producer that I've encountered can't do the engineer's job but are capable of filling in as they know the basics of how things work enough to make things work...I think that you missed the point of this video tbh and no one mentioned mastering in this video they were giving the jobs of a producer and how a producer differs from an engineer. Also, the majority of the audio engineers that I know are also producers and have credits on mainstream projects. They also have home studios in which they utilize to produce some of the songs that you may ear on the radio etc.
@AriJordan
@AriJordan 4 года назад
@AwesomeBrilliance What kind of microphone? What's the polar pattern? Which brand? If the mix is nosy it could be a lot of things from the cabling to your input sources. If it's background noises that you're picking up due to you recording in the wrong environment you may want to try a dynamic mic. Also, are you conversing with a mix engineer or a mastering engineer because they aren't really the same?
@just_me_melanie
@just_me_melanie 3 года назад
hmm, the definition of Producer is that they must know how to operate the board (or software) and mix it themselves? I don't know about that. I just learned how to engineer myself, so I can finally transfer everything I hear in my head (every note, every effect, all the levels, the entire sonic structure) into my DAW. I have spent years telling the engineer what to do, because I knew how the tiniest detail was supposed to sound. And I believe that's what production is.

Haha good question, would almost do it in a video now ;) A producer can sometimes only work with the band based on one project. And he works, together with the band, on the production process of their music. The band's manager is doing managing tasks like taking care of bookings, promotion, deals, contracts.. etc. (But these tasks can vary and are highly depending on the relation and agreement with the band and/or label.) Producers are usually musically creative, managers... manage :)

It’s almost offensive when a guy making beats in fruity loops are calling themselves producers/engineers when they don’t know anything outside of Fruity loops, especially most the guys on the “deconstructed” series of the genius channel. All the instruments in FL are already somewhat “dialed in”, that’s why most music in the last 7 years sounds the same. This is coming from a guy that enjoys “some” trap music. I think “beat maker” is more of an appropriate term for the trap producers. And don’t get me started when they use a musical “sample” , They’re more like a glorified dj, they’ll take a riff or a piece of music and add a drum beat.
@ebraheemrana
@ebraheemrana Год назад
Yes. So offensive. How dare they claim the title of "producer"? All they're doing is clicking on a few buttons and boom. A wild Instrumental appears. The lyrics, recording, mix, master, marketing material and promotion just happens automatically when you hit the export button in FL 🤓

My major is Sound Engineering, 2 year course. My main classes for first year are as follows: Sound Theory(using the Sound Reinforcement Handbook), Music Theory(self explanatory), DAW( Cubase for 1st year, Pro tools for second year.), and Studio Craft(recording in the studio, using mixing console, setting up all the equipment/instruments etc.) I'm also more into the direction of music production, I make hip hop and house beats. I think If you take up sound engineering its a great idea since you get to learn IMPORTANT fundamentals for music production such as mixing /mastering, music theory,which is crucial in making beats. But you should only take Sound/Audio engineering if you are also interested in the engineering aspect (recording artists, setting up sound system, mixing/mastering vocals and instruments etc). hope i could help bro and good luck.

Well of course. And people that drive trains are not 'engineers' either. That's just the name. "Engineer", in a really general sense, just means someone that understands how something technical works. But obviously it's more complex than that, where a second, more specific definition, would be someone who graduated with an engineering degree, which further means a complete theoretical/mathematical understanding of a technical concept.
