The difference between ISBN, Barcodes, LCCN, & copyright | Which does your self-published book need?

I’ve seen a lot of questions on this on comments on this channel, direct messages that I get from authors, in authors forums, so I am going to set the record straight on these three very different but very important technical aspects of your book. Your ISBN. Your Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) and your copyright. I’ve done videos on each of these topics individually which I will link to above and down in the description.

Thank you for addressing these topics. There is so much conflicting information online. Especially in regard to ebooks. Some say no ISBN is needed because it is sold online. Others including Bowker seem to show that you need an ISBN for any format difference.

In my opinion, yes eBooks need ISBNs. Amazon KDP specifically says that "kindle books do not need ISBNs" but that is because they assign their ASIN. I always advocate for owning your ISBN so it can go anywhere. And to answer your other question, yes technically all different formats need their own ISBN. I did get an email from Amazon last week that they are moving to ePub so that is very good news :) Best of luck on your journey!

Really good essential info for first time self-publishers. One question: If the bar code contains the price embedded within the actual code, as you seem to suggest, what happens when the book price changes as it often will? Or did I misunderstand that about bar codes? Ok, that's two questions, kind of. Oh, look, here's a third one (hey I'm on a roll): Has any of this info changed since you made this video 3 years ago? Like pricing (I remember when copyright registration was $10 -- good God I'm dating myself!). Thanks! BTW, I just liked and subscribed, so there's that. Now back to writing the brilliant opening of my new bestseller, let's see...ah yes, "It was a dark and stormy night...."

Yes, when you the author (or a publisher) permanently change the retail price it needs a new barcode if the fixed price is on the barcode. Sales which are limited time offers don't require a barcode change.

@@1MKWilliams Hi M.K. Some questions were answered when I viewed more of your informative videos. What remains are questions concerning pricing of my print book, relative to royalty comparisons between Kindle and IngramSpark (there will be paperback and hardcover versions, but let's focus on paperback). If the 400-page book is priced at $18.95, which is above comparable books of about the same page count, the KDP royalty is decent. However, the same list price results in a paltry royalty with IS when the wholesale discount is 55%. There's the option of pricing the book at $19.95, but even then, the IS royalty is relatively weak. I'm on the fence about listing at $19.95-I recognize the risk of losing some sales, yet I see the target market as being insensitive to price. That said, I don't want to come across as gouging. Another option is to lower the IS wholesale discount a bit, to, say, 53%. So, the questions are: 1) Would a slight reduction of the wholesale discount be detrimental to future retail store placement, and, 2) What is your advice regarding pricing?

@@robertpaxton3380 Hi Robert, I go into pricing in several of my videos and I did a masterclass video for my channel members earlier this year. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vNRRaO3gBZg.html Ultimately, you have control so you can adjust the price and discount as you see fit. If you think the algorithm is starting to work against you after lowering the wholesale discount you can increase it again. Every book/author has a unique experience and audience so it is hard to give blanket advice that will work for everyone.

Hi Jatoria, you'll want your ISBN and Library of Congress number on the copyright page of your book so yes, you need those prior to formatting. The barcode is up to you if you purchase one or use the no price barcode from KDP. Best of luck!

Great video and thanks for breaking it down so simply. Since you did this video I see Bowker you can now copyright with them and get barcodes. Do you reco them as a one stop shop? Do I need to put on my own barcode since I am doing the formatting myself using indesign? And finally, does KDP and ingramspark put the ISBN on the books after I provide them with the number?

A few things: 1. Yes, you can use Bowker's service to file the copyirght reg but I believe there is a markup so you save money doing it yourself and maybe save time going via Bowker. 2. In terms of if you need a paid barcode or not, I have a video for that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8KXTxHl22Jw.html 3. Yes, regardless of whether you supply your own ISBN or you use the "free" one, any service will apply it to the back/barcode. If you bring your own barcode the ISBN will already be on it.

Okay several questions about copywriting and price. I was looking on the official website. It says that if you do an electronic application its $45 and a standard is $65. Is there any reason you wouldn't do an electronic application? Next question, what if you're writing a series. Can you copywrite the series of books under one copywrite or do you need a separate copywrite for each book?

You would need one copyright registration per book if you wanted the entire series to be registered. I would consult an IP attorney for a recommended between the $45 and $65 option

QUESTION: My book was first published in Canada, and ISBNs are free there - in fact, I have a few left. Can I use those now that I'm in the US again? Will those numbers be accepted by the Copyright Office and the Library of Congress?

I believe you could still use them. I don't see why you couldn't also submit them with your copyright registration and Lccn request

I've been watching a video solely on ISBNs, and it works differently in Canada -- my Cdn ISBNs are from the gov't, and you send in a book, like you do with the Library of Congress here. I used my Cdn ISBNs with Ingramspark and Amazon so I guess I've answered my own question, now that I've thought it through. ISBNs are international, too, so the US Copyright Office and LCCNs should not be a problem.

However, I did find out that to get a new ISBN you have to be a Canadian resident, and I don't qualify for that anymore. (Yay!) So going forward, I'll definitely be buying them from Bowker. Thanks.

Hi Abdulla, So I know what the cost for these things are and the process to acquire them for U.S. citizens and residents. I would suggest doing some research for your current country of residence/citizenship as they may have very different processes and fees. (ex. In the US we have to pay for ISBNs, but in some countries there is no cost for citizens like in Canada.) Best of luck!

No. Barcodes are only for physical products. Ebooks do not need barcodes. They do however, need ISBNs.

I'm in the middle of submitting my book on KDP. My ISBN which I bought personally is printed on the back cover. I decided not to put my barcode on because it had the price imbedded and I changed my mind about it, but saw on KDP's website that they will add a barcode if you don't have one. Is that right? I don't want them to print over my ISBN! When they say barcode, do they mean barcode or ISBN.

Hi Viki, If you do not provide a barcode on your print cover, KDP will add a no-fixed-price barcode to the back of the book. This will be an EAN ISBN-13 Barcode and your ISBN will show on the barcode. I hope that helps.

Hi, MK, really greatful for this precious help! Just some simple and brief questions: 1. I'm writing from Italy (my residence) but will be publishing a book which is (for now) addressed to an American audience. I guess I need the American LCCN and copyright, for now am I right? 2. Congrats on finishing your first book. Since you are a resident of Italy you will be an ISBN from your ISBN service in Italy and Italian copyright law would protect your work internationally. I suggest researching those items in your country of residence as the ISBN service in the US requires a US address. Best of luck!

Hi, I was looking back on your videos and could not find what to do after you mail your book to the Library of Congress? Do you call them to confirm they received it? do you now call all the local libraries and ask them to carry your book?

Once you send in the book to the LOC you are done. You don't have to check in with them. A UPC code usually refers to the numbers at the bottom of a barcode. For books the most important identifying number on an ISBN13 Barcode is the ISBN not the UPC number

Very helpful. I'm planning on publishing my book through KDP. Based on your video I plan to get my own ISBN (not through KDP), I guess I'll get an LCCN (why not), I will copyright my work, don't think I need my own barcode since KDP puts them on when printing the books. I guess I need to get all of these before I have KDP even publish a proof copy for me since these numbers need to be in the book content. Is that correct? Do any of these require you to send the book (either electronic draft or final print) to them? And in what timeframe. Thanks.

ISBN you need before it goes to print. Lccn you could get later but I recommend getting both before upload. Both of those numbers need to go on the copyright page in the book. The copyright registration you can do after the book is published. Best of luck!

Yes, you'll have to market to them. You can submit your book as a purchase request or let your local hometown library know. Usually you'll market to your readers that they can ask the library to purchase the book

If I get a 10 ISBN from Booker and just want to get one barcode through them, as it is my first book, is this possible? And then get the other barcodes for either hard book version or other new books when that happens? Thank you for all your wonderful informative information you provide!

Yes you can get the barcodes as needed. Also I don't think there is a financial savings buying the barcodes with the pack of isbns or as you need them. They're always $25

I'm going to be writing Vacation Bible School (VBS) kits and Sunday school curriculum, and I'm not sure if I need to set ISBNs for them or not. The VBS is basically a "kit" of books ex: directors' guide, skit book, craft book, game book, etc. These are just letter-sized, paperback "guidebooks" for running a VBS. I've seen companies that sell them put ISBNs on them, but I didn't know if that was required or recommended. I have the same question about Sunday school curriculum. The difference is that there is only one "book" at a time, and they are released quarterly. I haven't seen any examples of ISBNs on that type of thing. Also, I don't even know if this would be considered a literary work or something else. Would you be able to advise on this? Thank you!

Hmm I've never put anything like that together so I have no experience. However, if you are seeing other curriculums print books or booklets and guides with isbns that could indicate that is the way to go

OMGOODNESS. Thank you so much for this video!! Its a few years old and not sure if you are still replying to comments....but does the LCCN and copyright need to be handled before uploading to kdp? I have finished my manuscript for a childrens book. My head is swimming with what needs to happen / sequence of tasks to finally publish the book. Whew, its a lot!

No, the LCCN and copyright registration can be done after uploading. However once you have the LCCN you'll want to add it to the copyright page so you'd have to upload the new version at some point

I wish I had watched your video before "publishing" my book on lulu. I submitted a copyright registration and two copies of my book to the LOC Copyright office and stated that it was already published, not really having any idea what a LCCN is. Now I guess it's too late to get one.

You can still get a Lccn, you'll just want to edit the interior file to Include the number and update the file on lulu

My manuscript currently includes images that I have paid for from Canva (I have the permission to use these pictures). When I upload my manuscript on the copyright website, should I include the pictures that I have paid for and have permission for? Or should I just upload the manuscript with writing only. In this case you would list the images as a limitation on the copyright, you are saying that the work you are copyrighting are your words, not the images used with permission.

Yes, ebooks need unique isbn numbers that are distinct from the paperback. The copyright registration covers the entire work in all formats. Both formats should have a copyright page with the isbn number listed. You can make one for each format or do I e copyright page that lists both isbns

Hey has anyone tried publishing their hardback book on amazon kdp and using an isbn for the hardback. But then for the paperback, not using an isbn, and linking it to the hardback? You think that would work? Because if you don't use an isbn, amazon does not let you show inside your book. So I'm wondering if I could do this as a way to save on an isbn.

Hello, I don't see why that wouldn't work. However, I think I would question what your strategy is with your ISBNs. The reason to own your ISBN when you bring it to Amazon is for your to retain full control if you ever want or need to move the content to a second platform. If you plan to self publish the print books on multiple platforms you have to own the ISBN. If you are sticking with Amazon only and don't ever intend to publish it wide then you don't need to purchase either ISBN. I see ISBN ownership as an all or nothing. In the US Bowker offers a discount on a bundle of ISBNs so if you need 3 or more you save by getting the bundle

I'm selling a planner on amazon kdp. It gets updated every year as a new book because the calendar changes. I have a unique planner in a niche that I don't see anyone else selling. Should I copyright a planner? In this case I'm thinking I should. Does 1 copyright work for all years for the planner or do I have to get a new one every year?

Once I got to the bottom, where it asked for "projected publication date," a pop-up said, "If your book is already published, please consider donating your book to The Library of Congress. Hi Gwen, This is probably a question best answered by a lawyer, however I do know this .. your work is protected under copyright (for us citizens and residents) the moment you type the first word. The copyright registration is added protection should you need to prove someone is infringing. In this digital age you can easily email yourself the drafts as proof of what you had written at a given date and time. Since the final product may differ from manuscript and your initial protection, if you elect to register your copyright I would recommend doing it for the final novel. But again, I'm not a lawyer.

I’ve noticed that several books have a page with copyright information on it. Where did they get that lingo from. I’ve called the US copyright office and was told there’s no template for those words. I ask b/c I want similar info in my book to let the public know it’s copyrighted.

How many ISBN's do you need for ebook since there are format differences. Amazon Kindle uses mobi format and most others use epub format. If the original work is published in epub format then you upload the epub to Kindle who then in turn makes it available as a mobi. Do you need a separate ISBN for each?

Hi Harvey, Yes as a US citizen your work is protected under US copyright. If you plan to stay in Taiwan permanently, you may look into their ISBN options to see if it would cost less. If it is unavailable or prohibitive then go with the US option.

I'm not sure how the kindle gift cards would work for a few reasons. Mainly they could use that card to buy any book, you'd have to pre-pay for the books on a lot of cards, and because you are giving the reader money they technically any reviews could get flagged and taken down if Amazon catches on. The idea of the QR code sounds good, I know more authors are using that to direct readers to their sales pages. Best of luck!

HI, MK, Ok now another problem. 1. I think you said no on the copyright need for my type of books, and the Library of Congress might not be really needed but nice for a safe guide, but I still have to figure that one out if I want to go for the $65.00 or not. So if I don't really need it, why get it. Now for the control number you said is free, do I put that number on the copyright page with the library of Congress number? In my first book, I went to KDP, and through IS sells to Libraries. Do I still need a library control number(I do want my books there)?

Hi Dan, Okay a few clarifying points here: 1. US based authors are protected under copyright law as soon as they create their work. The copyright registration through the US Copyright Office for $65 is an added later of protection should you have a claim. It is a relatively inexpensive certification, but usually authors don't get the certification number by the time the book is published. 2. The Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) applies IF you want your book to get into libraries. If you don't plan to get your books there, don't worry about it. If you want your books there then you'll need to register for one. There is no cost. But you need to know your ISBN number when applying for it. If you use a "free" ISBN from a publishing platform you won't know the ISBN until after the book is published and therefore won't be able to have the LCCN (or the ISBN) on the copyright page for your book. 3. Both the ISBN and LCCN go on the copyright page of your book, it is good to get these assigned well ahead of formatting. 4. If you want IS to get your book into libraries then yes, get an LCCN. Good video. I have a question though. I'll be self publishing soon. I have a friend who manages a gift shop and she said they would like to carry my book. I was planning on getting a free isbn from Amazon. How would this work? Would I purchase a batch of books from Amazon and then sell them to the gift shop?

You CAN sell direct to your friend even if you use the Amazon ISBN. I usually don't recommend getting their ISBN (for many reasons), but in this specific use case it won't impact you. You can still order author copies at-cost and then resell them to your friend's store. However, say this goes well and other local stores want to carry your book. You wouldn't have any way to distribute to them except through this very manual process. Best of luck!

Bowler is offering a copyright registration for more than double the cost from the US Copyright office. Seems to me if other countries get their ISBN number for free, we should too!

Yep, a lot of services (legalzoom etc.) offer copyright registration. You're paying the registration fee and for someone to do it for you. And yes, it would be awesome to have free ISBNs, no idea whose senator or congressman I have to lobby for that one 🤷‍♀️

I'm sorry to say, this gov site is the worst ever developed. BUT, aside from that, I've copyrighted my songs, films etc since the 70's. Is there a way to find a LIST of all of my copyrights on this website? Meaning I don't have to search each one out. I've put in my legal name which appears on all copyrights, and it seems to just randomly pick ONE of my copyrights. So, yes and no. Yes in that my recommendation to own your ISBNs applied to any author. Yes is that your copyright should be recognized globally (most countries have reciprocal agreements to respect and defend copyright). Yes that a barcode is not an ISBN and the decision to have a price on it is something to consider. Where you get your ISBNs from in the Netherlands is the Bureau ISBN www.isbn.nl Best of luck with your book!
