It really takes me back remembering how many conversations I had with an interrupter running in the background. Thanks for sharing this info in a real life atmosphere.
Wow this was really cool to hear the background on loop vs ground start from a termination standpoint. Back in the late 90's we were dealing with issues using small Asterisk systems and their fxo/fxs analog line cards prior to everything being moved over to IP/SIP trunks or T1/PRI for larger systems.... Asterisk wouldn't know when someone hung up when the line was configured as loop start. (and just now reading William Degnan comment about glare that was another issue we were having). I did some research on the Asterisk forums and found that a ground start line will provide disconnect signaling / supervision. It fixed the issues we were having but I never thought about it from the calling out standpoint and why that would be important.
Always wondered how that worked, ground vs loop. Sounds like the telco company provided all loop start lines but they could be converted to ground start using an on site device or maybe part of the on site pbx.
