ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions. ABOUT US Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

As far as I understand it goes like this. There is pure consciousness. Then there are objects like us. Now, the pure consciousness is reflected in our mind as a result we become aware. Now, the question is: where is that pure consciousness (like the mirror, if so in the mirror or water analogy do we have to take them as limitless?) . Is that consciousness within my karan sarir or causal self? If yes, is that conscousness our soul?
@Sunlight-bi6ld
@Sunlight-bi6ld 2 месяца назад
Conciousness is limitless but reflection doesn't mean actual reflection, reflection means effect of conciousness , let me explain you more clearly there is subject and there is object than the subject affects object and object become false concious, and on non living things there is no mind that's why they are not concious

For those who are stuck in this imaginary problems which I overcame by reasoning- 1. This waking mind imagines the whole dream therefore waking world is real and dreaming world is false. (Reply)-- Now imagines(by closing your eyes) a tiger running in a forest and then he jumped and hunted a deer and the tiger start eating it. Now open your eyes. Tell me are you sure that this waking mind imagines it all or you are believing that the mind imagines it? Of course you are certain and sure. But see this certainty is not there after we woke up from a dream! It feels like a real time experience like this world. We beleive that it was all imagined but we know that it was an experience. By this it is proved that this waking mind does not imagined the dream it was a experience. 2. This unchanging awareness is a product of the brain. (Reply)-- In dreams also the dreaming ego got its own mind and senses. It can think,react and has own ideas. Now in that dream if you say that the witness consciousness of the dream is a product of that dreaming ego's brain then it is a absurd statement. Also from the first point it is proved that this waking mind does not imagines the dream , it is a experience. Therefore, like the dreaming ego, the waking ego has its own mind and senses. Like dream if you say this witness consciousness of waking is a product of this brain then it is also an absurd statement. The witness is independent of any brain and mind. The dreaming or waking mind depends on the witness as its existence.

But what is this witness
@moregains9883
@moregains9883 6 месяцев назад
Oh boy, this witness is the real you. That is Brahman. Go with this. In dreams is that waking body present? No it is not. But are you present? Yes because if not then how you experienced the dream. Since without the waking body you are aware of the dream experience therefore you are not the waking body. Similarly, is the dreaming body present now? No it is not. But are you present? Yes because you are experiencing it now. Therefore you are neither the waking ego nor the dreaming ego. Then who are you? You are the witness of the both. The effortless awareness of the both. The un-witness-able formless one. That is you. That is Brahman. In deep sleep no world no egos are present but that effortless awareness is present. Repeat the same logic. Is any ego present in the dream? No. But are you present? Yes because you are aware of the void and silent of the deep sleep. That awareness is who you are.
@moregains9883
@moregains9883 6 месяцев назад
See that same awareness which you are is aware of the waking,dreaming and deep sleep and is present in both the states and it illumines all the state. That awareness is You. It is only one awareness. Minds are many but awareness is only one. Also this world and minds are false like the world and minds in a dream. You the awareness is watching another dream which is now a waking dream.

@@moregains9883 you cannot be the witness as you’re the subtle body. If you take away the subtle body only witness remains - there is no you
@moregains9883
@moregains9883 6 месяцев назад
I think you are not grasping at what I am indicating. Let there be a subtle body a world as many egod as you like. But just ask one question. They all may be present but how are you aware of them all? Even you are aware of the dream ego and world when it appears in your awareness. Similarly when this waking ego which you consider(ignorantly) as yourself and this waking world appears when it is in your awareness. Just experience this. Just like the dreaming ego and world, this waking ego and the world and its people are all seen by you the same formless awareness. But you cannot be aware of yourself. What you see is not you. And you cannot see yourself.

Heard this ... Nice attempt to explain and answer ... But vice versa is also equally true as per sankhya ... that Swamiji mentioned. Sankhya told andha pangu nyay. Prakruti is pangu, can see but can't walk and purush , brahm can walk but can't see ...so andh carries pangu on its shoulder and pangu shows direction... this is what sankhya says.Brahm requires mind body complex to sense , feel, see walk , listen , smell ...as per this theory ...independently it can't do anything...as it's just energy.. Just like electricity...which gives power to doll , car toys , instruments to work and without electricity those can't...similarly without instruments electricity can't do anything... So both the ways it is true ... He also mentioned that subtle body is required... hence due to the absence of subtle body podium can't do anything eventhough brahm is everywhere... It sounds self contradictory.... If we accept sarvam khalu idam brahmasmi.. Jagat mithya ...then why subtle body is required in the absence of which podium is not sensing anything... so subtle body other than brahm and other than podium exists .... This dismantles adwIt. What is your opinion ?

Love to listen to Swamiji and this question of what makes a difference between sentient and non-sentient is also difficult for me to grasp in terms of advaita. If we assume Consciousness can appear/manifest as a physical body (insentient) or physical body plus subtle body (sentient), than question comes when does subtle body come into play. Therefor it seems like we are smugling the hard problem of consciousness here by the backdoor. Would it be then incorrect to think every object is composed of both physical and subtle body, but each object has different level of (both subtle and physical) complexity? Isn't it by the way what Donald Hoffman argues?

But, when it became very very clear am now like 'OMG I am G' 😂😂😂 but the fact is it takes alot of sravana manana and nididyasana, I mean a LOT of time has to be given to advaita vedanta teachings especially with our swami sarvapriyananda. There is no need of mirror or of reflection. Everything is consciousness, at different levels. The problem is that You keep on thinking that Advaita is Shankara's and others ... You repeat and You are in the duality. Non c'è bisogno di un riflesso o di uno specchio. Tutto è coscienza, a differenti livelli. Il problema è che pensi che Advaita è quello di Shankara e altri... Ripeti, e sei nella dualità. @CarlaAjatanandaMataji

“I think therefore I am.” The occurrence of thought implies the existence of the thinker. That’s my understanding of Descartes.

I think therefore I am. This I is the work of ego which is also the work of mind. We are not the mind. "I am therefore I am" Because real I can not become object. Even "I am" refering true self. These two words are also taken from outside world ( world of mind) just to give the direction. Last obstacle to enlightment is - "I am".

@@arpansingh1966 We would both agree our true nature is Atman, and we are not the mind, body, or emotions, but that is not the point being made. The point is that a thought cannot exist unless there is a thinker, and so to have a thought implies there is a thinker. If there is a thinker, there is the one who thinks. Again, we both agree our true nature is Atman, and Atman from the Advaitic perspective is the witness consciousness. In this case, the witness of thought, but that is separate from the point being made. Thank you for your comment 🙏

To me, the irony is that in investigating and exploring the true nature of reality and true nature of our thoughts , the logic of advaita vedanta got trapped in the biggest illusion that our brain creates, the “unchanging self”.

If I understand what you're saying, I would say I agree that there would seem to have to be a mind which is aware of everything in the Universe and in some mysterious way keeps up with the appearance of it. I think Swami Priyananda is referring to our being before the ever changing appearance of the Universe. There are quite a few opinions which seem possible to me but I find myself at least hoping the mind of all is still evolving considering the present appearance of things which I believe very well may be a reflection of my own belief which is a shared belief with everyone in our Universe which is one of a great many.

Advaita Vedanta isn’t trapped, nor is it concerned with the “true nature of our thoughts.” Any phrases like the unchanging self are pedagogies, not the truth itself.

@@imaginaryuniverse632I’m not saying that there is an uber consciousness, Brahman, which underwrites the consciousness of all conscious lives. If I define consciousness as awareness of one’s existence, then all I can say is that I am conscious, sometimes, most of the time, I’m not. Extrapolating my experience to other human beings, I can see that they can be conscious too in varying degrees. Extrapolating that to other primates, I have seen research,” that makes me think that they are conscious too. Any animal with a brain and a nervous system can be cinscious to some degree. Outside of that, I don’t think consciousness is felt. To me, consciousness has evolved in nature to support life. It’s natural, not supernatural. I don’t think the universe is conscious, nor the rocks or the plants or the sun or the moon or the mountains and the seas. I love the Upanishads for the exploration of existence and the conclusion that our brain creates a reality in order to navigate and survive in the world and that what I see outside is not exactly what is out there, I’m seeing selectively. Also, the fact that our brain is very capable of creating illusory things in order to make sense of the world. But, to take that understanding and extrapolate that everything outside of my brain does not exist or there is an uber all-knowing mind is a bridge too far for me. I do think that it’s harmful for me or anyone else to think that there is an observer inside my head which is observing my actions and my body and brain are just inert objects. It has helped me realize that the observer or internal voice in my head, is just another thought which can observe other thoughts and that my self is a construction of brain. I had an accident a few years back and I was unconscious i.e. unaware of my existence for almost nine hours because my brain got shook up real bad and when things came back, my self came back too. That was evidence enough for me that self is a construction of my brain.
@martinwagner7361
@martinwagner7361 6 месяцев назад
It's not trapped.... unchanging Self doesn't refer to thoughts or any personal Self but unchanging Awareness of all that can be observed like body or Mind activities. And Consciousness isn't really created by the Brain.... that becomes pretty obvious if you have ever experienced a NearDeathExperience.... Brain is just a part of the BodyMind INTERFACE but the Mind itself is not within the physical Brain...
