@@EnglishwithMax Yes. In Portuguese, you'd "sit in the shade(sombra)" and when you are standing in the sunlight you are able to "see your shadow(sombra)".

That's often the case, but not always... For example, you might take a large umbrella to the beach so that you have some shade to sit in.

My guess shade is more like a shelter. The two of the words even sounds alike.

I’m grateful for your comments about my previous text. I’ve been trying to learn English by myself at internet, so I found out some of your videos in “you tube” site. They are very good and helpful. Well done! I think that the possible problems you have with Spanish probably will be the same with Portuguese. Indeed, these two languages are very similar, though I cannot satisfactorily understand Spanish language by listening. I am able to read with the help of a dictionary. By the way, if I were a native English speaker, I would study Portuguese and probably move up to Brazil. It’s because Portuguese is very easy to learn how to pronounce all the words, and he or she could make money by teaching English in here. The biggest difficulties of Portuguese is to know how to use the definite article (“o” or “a”= the), because everything has a genre (masculine or feminine) and to know how conjugate the verbs. But, you don´t need to worry about it, because in a few months you will adapt to the new language. Beside that the foreign are very welcome in Brazil and everybody likes do help them with his or her Portuguese problems. Please, leave a comment about my text. I know it's hard because they're so similar, and sometimes in English you can technically say either. Then it's a question of "what would a native speaker naturally say?" and not "is one correct and the other one incorrect?". Have you ever read something in German that was grammatically correct, but didn't sound like a native speaker had written it? It's a similar principle here. Maybe you could think of shade as "shelter from the sun". P.S. I have similar difficulties with "anders" and "unterschiedlich", and I used to mix up "Erlebnis" and "Erfahrung" ;)

Thanks, glad you like them! That's quite simple: you have to say "at night". It's incorrect with the other prepositions. Occasionally you might hear "in the night" (e.g. the event occurred in the night), but that's rare, so I would avoid it and just say "at night".

oksy po That's a good point! Here you say "on a cold night". Basically if you have some other word/s between the preposition and "night", you use "on". E.g. On Monday night, on a cold night, on the night of my graduation etc. Is that clear?

We would say a tree casts a shadow. But we would say: I'm going to sit in the shade of that tree.

@@EnglishwithMax Yes, Max! I heard it from an American tutor on Cambly. I believe so. It's been a long time since I had that class with him. But, that is exactly the meaning I learned regarding the expression "Working in the shade". It would be something illegal or somehow unacceptable.
