Thanks for telling me the difference. I have always loved him but I did find him kinda selfish in the 90s. I’m the manga (which I haven’t finished reading), he is absolutely the best bf!! ❤
I was actually fond of him even in the 90's because I chalked up his awkwardness and reticence to being a very lonely orphan and losing his memories of early childhood (aspects of his character reflected in Crystal and the original manga too), the movies showed his loneliness and shyness (especially R!) better, but *wow,* seeing how sweet he is in Crystal and reading the first volume of the manga--he really is a much sweeter father figure and romantic interest. It was a cute role reversal to see Usagi tell him to fall behind (back when he had no great power of his own) and leave the fighting to her. It was nice to see him wish for more power to fight by her side and get his own attack. I adore the Crystal S3 episode where Chibiusa sweetly had Usagi and Mamoru help fix the chalice together, it was so sweet seeing her bring her parents closer together, the old anime fell back on her little girl "when I grow up, I'm gonna marry my dad!" shtick too much!! And Usagi and Chibiusa fought over Mamoru too much and girllls, that's literally your future dad, your future daughter, and your future husband respectively??? xD;;;
Ok gurl, I am now more motivated to watch/read the later version, when you said it has him only 2 yrs older cuz the 90s one is what was etched in my mind (and prolly why I never continued it, based on the first few episodes). And yes, he was a douche.
Mamoru Chiba was given more character development in the Manga, especially the fourth arc, that's why I was displeased with the way the 90s Anime butchered his character, and one of the reasons the 90s Anime didn't age well for me.
90s Anime did Mamoru SO dirty. They made him seem more of an asshole, when he really isn’t in the manga. Sure, he does tease Usagi at times but he was never as mean as in the 90s Anime. Not to mention them aging him up....Oh well, he’s my favorite either way lol. Side note: he’s pretty in the Anime but he’s MAJESTIC in the manga 😍
