The difference between Urban Planning and Urban Design explained in 100 seconds

I often have to explain this to people interested in understanding how the built environment in a governed area “works”. Another point I use is that UDs are the more “visionary” & “creative” ones that are using “design thinking” principles to direct the outcome while UPs are primarily policy oriented, trying to narrate & codify the design & vision of the UDs. I will use the idea that we’re building a complex crown: the UDs, create the vision and design, the UPs create the instructions & requirements, the engineers figure out how to make it safe & legal while the architects create the jewels (often trying to make theirs the “crown jewel”). The vent diagram has much overlap while the flow of process is very fluid & dynamic depending on project, scope & needs. The worst thing most municipalities do though is to eliminate the UDs from the process, favoring a default design-by-engineer(ing), that uses a very different method & way of thinking. We ignore the envisioning and creative processes to our peril (literally).

Not True, urban planners, automatically learn, urban design. According to the crediting body, urban design has to be taught within Urban planning curriculum.
