Thank you for taking the time to explain the differences between the various stains. I'm a beginner and want to stain my house. Now I have a very good idea of how to begin.

Thanks for this! I'm refinishing my grandpa's wood desk - taking off decades of paint and there's lot of dents and missing pieces from the years of wear. I had no idea where to start when it came to the finishing!

Awesome video, your stuffs always very informative!! Can you make a video on stripping the stains? Example on a fresh coat that maybe customer doesn’t like and then an old solid stain? Appreciate it!!

Great video Everett. Do you have any thoughts on staining the underside of a (8’ high) deck? We’d like to freshen up the underside but are worried about trapping moisture in the joists etc. Would using a breathable stain avoid this problem? Apologies if you’ve already posted a video on the subject.

Great question! On an elevated deck it is best to just keep it clean with no coating. However, with today’s focus on outdoor living space this may not be an option. Many homeowners are adding paver patios, stamped concrete patios, and more types of living space under their decks. Some folks are adding a roofing system under the decks as well. So, if you are going to coat the underside for appearance, the best option is a sealer, next would be a semi-transparent. Be careful of solids and semi-solids that will chip and peel. The underside is much more time consuming labor wise. Also, if spraying you must be very careful spraying upward between planks. Sealers and semi-transparent will be easier to maintain and re-coat in the future.

Thanks for the informative Vedic. I learn a lot from it. However, I still have a question. I am trying to decide either I should buy timber oil or sealer for me 1 year old deck. Your Vedic didn’t mention timber oil though. Could you please show us the difference between them? Much appreciated 🎉

My husband and I love your videos and the information you provide. We are about to use some Cedar tone PRESSURE TREATED wood for new railings on our concrete patio, which has an older CEDAR WOOD patio cover with lattice. We will clean and brighten, and stain the older wood cover per your videos with a matching stain to the CEDARTONE PRESSURE TREATED WOOD railings. The questions is,, do we need to do anything to the new CEDARTONE PRESSURE WOOD railings to keep it all a cohesive color since it will hopefully match? Thank you!

Thanks for clarifying, I am not sure though how the wood release the humidity away through the solid stain and prevents the rain to get in.
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 2 месяца назад
If it didn’t it would be a paint. The difference between a solid stain and a paint is the characteristic of permeability. There is another video on this topic.

I have a wood porch floor that's about 20 years old and it's only had sealer on it and I pressure wash it from time to time. My question is which stain will cover the old grain best but penetrate the wood? I want stain that will only fade over time and not flake up like paint does. Any suggestions on which I should use? Trying to hide imperfections as well.

But, you never discussed the exterior pain option on here. I just painted 2 large decks with Valspar porch & deck paint..I need to know what can I use on top of paint to seal the wood..weatherproof it..???

I hope you found a good wood sealer. Valspar has a waterproof wood sealer. You can find it at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Would like to understand if sealants actually protect the wood ? Also does the wood gets discolored after some time though we have sealants due to weather?
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 2 месяца назад
Sealers and stains absolutely extend the life of the wood. I have seen decks left unprotected warp, cup, excessively crack and more in 7-12 years. A well maintained deck should last over 20 years. Wood does discolor and lose its original luster, just like most things. It is just addressed by adjusting the tint or stain used over time.

I had to replace all of my deck surface wood. PT Pine. It receives alot of Southern sun and humidity. Alot of people swear by used oil and diesel mix that really penetrates the wood and leaves a slight color. Seen success of this on trailers. What are your thoughts on this? I need to apply something very soon. Could I apply semi-solid stain later with this oil mixture applied first?
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood Год назад
You could certainly do that, in that order. Semi-solids will probably peel. Drain oil and used oil have been used for many, many years to preserve and protect wood from log cabins to farm wagons and everything in between.

@@wizardofwood Thank you for your reply. Do you have a better suggestion than a semi-solid? Peeling doesn't sound A-peeling.

I am planning to paint a mural on an old, bare, treated wood fence. I power washed it and cleaned it with an oxalic acid product. It is ready for the primer or base coat. Stain or paint or something else to get it ready for mural paint?
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 11 месяцев назад
It should be yes. If you use a primer I like Benjamin Moore’s 046. I would use solid stain for the mural over paint. More “breathable” as a coating. On a vertical surface you should not have a problem.
@edknapp6677

Thanks so much for answering. To be sure I got it right: Stain as a base layer for breathability and then paint the mural?@@wizardofwood

Great video. Help! Ha ha I have just stained my large deck with water based transparent stain, on six month old pressure treated wood. Unfortunately, I only got one coat on that day. then it rained,,,So my question is, can you put the second coat on six days later? Thanks so much.
@DRPEnterprises
@DRPEnterprises Год назад
Most the time the answer is no. Stains and sealers once dried will repel themselves. That is why wet-on-wet coats are ideal.

So,then is solid not good for deck floors? You said Simi solid not. But I'm not sure that it is the same as solid.
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 2 года назад
There is no perfect product or we would all be using it. Different circumstances influence product selection. When you use paint or a solid stain on a horizontal wood surface that is constantly moving (expanding and contracting) it will “pop” the coating and you get peeling. This is just a characteristic of these products. Sealers, transparents, and many semi-transparents tend to wear away and not peel. These are much easier to maintain in the future.
@richardmckrell4899
@richardmckrell4899 4 месяца назад
Saying stains are breathable is misleading. All modern stains and paints are non-breathable petroleum based plastic coatings of different densities which sit on the surface of the wood. Oil stains are a little easier to re-coat but after a few re-coats, the wood will need to be stripped as you are just adding non-breathable plastic over non-breathable plastic. Linseed oil stains are the only exterior wood stain that actually penetrates into the wood and is actually breathable. You can make your own linseed oil stain by diluting linseed oil paint, with boiled linseed oil. Allback makes quality linseed oil products.
