This is INCORRECT at 0:07, all PS2 Slims are backwards compatible, it's just that later PS2 slims have less playable PS1 games due to not having the I/O chip (PS1 CPU) so it relies entirely on software emulation.

He was wrong about backwards compatibility. Every single PS2 model can play PS1 games, it was one of the console’s selling points. The actual difference is that later slim models use software instead of native hardware to play PS1 games.
@ENNEN420
@ENNEN420 2 года назад
All of them are compatible with PS1. The REAL difference is that that specific series removed the actual MIPS R3000A, the original chip that the PS1 ran off of. Subsequent models used a chip to emulate it from I believe Motorola. Sad thing is, imagine if someone who knew nothing about consoles wanted to get themselves a PS2 slim and didn't know that it was false that the subsequent models didn't run PS1 games.

I bought a model 90 recently as it has the most fitting look next to the ps3 and ps4 slim, its also Ideal for having the power brick integrated (thats why the connector is different), so that means less clutter behind the console. It was already incredible to me how small the 7xxxx slims were, and then they even managed to fit the power supply into it with the 9xxxx, that's just crazy 🤯. Btw, it plays PS1 games just fine.

Another difference: the late 90xxx series has only 1 sensor and a disc stopper in the DVD drive, while all others have 2 sensors and a disc stopper. That second sensor they removed was inside the console, but since it caused a lot of problems with the DVD drive, they decided to remove it. The final 90xxx model also didn’t support firmware updates installed on a memory card, which also meant there was no way to install FreeMCBoot on it (altough alternate exploits were made for those models). The power supply was also internal (which is why the plug is different). All consoles were backwards compatible, the later ones used software emulation however.

Every single model of the PS2 up to the final SCPH-90xxx builds are almost fully backwards compatible to PS1 games. Plus, the power input on the final model isn't just "different" - they managed to again build in the power supply unit like they did on the fat PS2 (the ones up to SCPH-50xxx). The other slim models rely on external power bricks. This comes, tho, at the price of the final slim model needing its own vertical stand solution that has become a sought-after collectible. Get your facts straight, pal.

@RJ Cox ok i understand and i did some research a little bit ago and i just found out that I'm right and wrong. So just to let you know that's why you could have had issues because certain games don't work right or they don't work at all because it's not meant for that PS2 or it's not programmed for the PS2 because Sony had to design it to play only most games which is lazy and fucked up if you agree.
@retroguy2525
@retroguy2525 2 года назад
@RJ Cox right right I understand it's just that it must be a certain reason why you were having some issues with the slim versions maybe like you said it could've been the disc or the laser. But the other issue could of been that there's always that one out of a million chance that the console could've been just defective somehow in some kind of way you know mine I mean? I just figured I mentioned that issue because neither one of us during this conversation but I can remember mentioning about that the whole thing that it could be defective from some kind of way but it works for everything else or works mostly you know what I mean.

I never knew there were different versions of these. We had the original one but it was silver. I think the final version if it looks the best.

Bought the final model in late 2009 after saving up all fall for DJ Hero. Best last minute mind change ever. I probably put over 200 hours into GTA Sanandreas through the winter.
