Recognizing which stage of alcoholism an addict is in can serve as a wake-up call to quit drinking alcohol - putting the shovel down before they've dug a hole much harder to get out of. Find out what defines each alcoholism stage and help yourself or your addicted loved one in quitting drinking before it's too late for their journey in getting sober. For the families, knowing more about the stages can help you understand how to position yourselves in their lives, providing your addict significant other the help they need, while ultimately protecting your peace from the messy addict behaviors.

Absolutely so difficult to watch this happen to a spouse. The long term effects of alcohol on every organ system in the body is devastating. As a nurse trying to get them to understand this was impossible. Had to finally leave. Especially devastating to the brain.

I want to be the perfect example of a fatty liver. (I signed up to be a cadaver, may as well be a good to the future of health science; nothing better than the students to get to see it up close and in person)

I had to leave mine too. And then it still took him 6 months to figure out the problem he was in.

I left three times + got him to finally get sober. Lasted only 8months. And as soon as one excuse came walking into our lives he took it and 3yrs later is right back to addiction level last phase. 😢 alcohol, pills, cocaine, steroids… it’s like he can’t pick one? Nope. Gotta do it all! 🤯 And heaven forbid I try to focus on me and get my Pennie’s right, all I get is negative feedback, sabotage, and his need to try to stop me from growing. 🤬

@@rinina9452 sadly, that is the reality of being with someone with addiction. They hate you and degrade you for doing right things. The people who are the closest, get it the worst.

It must be rough having a front row seat to all of this. I didn't even realize my loved one had a problem until she was evicted for missing payments. I wish she would have reached out for help before this happened. She is still homeless. Please pray.

I'm in the early stages of alcoholism. Once I start drinking it's game over, I drink until blackout and make a total arse of myself. I can't say no when I do go out or am in social situations, or control how much I drink. I've always called myself a "stage 1 alcoholic". The amount of shame and regret the day after is so immense that I vow never to drink again, until someone offers me a drink. Then it happens all over again. This is how I know it's alcoholism. I am so fortunate that I don't ruminate or obsess over alcohol the way end stage alcoholics do every single day, but my only strategies are to avoid bars and have a partner who is also sober. I lose out on a lot of social situations it feels to me, sometimes.

My husband has distanced himself from everything after he retired. Rarely goes outside the house now. I am beyond having empathy and now it’s apathy. He has all the physical issues you describe and does not eat well even though I try to entice him with healthy meals. Now he won’t go to the doctor for a checkup which he used to be adamant about. At best we are friendly roommates with me playing the role of his maid and gardener. He has been to rehab before and was sober for a year. But…. So, now what?

Yes, my hubs “acceptance” looks like this… “don’t listen to your loser husband. I’m an alcoholic.” But tone is obnoxious & combative. He’s back; past the point of no return. Nothing I say matters & he’s going to end up in the hospital all over again just like last time w alcohol poisoning. He even lies about why he was in hospital (rhabdomiosis). it was just “stress” & coincidentally same “disease real alcoholics” get. 🙄 I’m constantly in trauma response and avoid him now. (Narc-abuse is subplot now) Staying emotionally regulated for my own mental health & joy is a battle when living every day w this chaos of watching him slowly kill himself and create drama wherever he goes. 😢

Go very low carb, sugar is an addiction, so you have to really cut it out to as maximal degree as possible. Some people have had great success squashing the sugar addiction with carnivore.

Exactly, it's a fact that quitting booze not only makes your world a better place to be in, good things start to “magically” happen and the energy is insane! Steffon Barkload's Quit Drinking Forever, that’s the best shortcut I go’ogled that took less than a week to work without suffering withdrawal.
