Bluegrass for people who don't like bluegrass! Recorded live in the 60's and released in 1999. "The Dillards The First Time Live!". A great, great album. Cripple Creek as only can be done by The Dillards!
ENJOY!!!!!!!!

I loved it when the lady singing with the Dillards sang 'There is a time' on Andy Griffith show....loved that tune so much I learnt it as a little tacker, and now I sing it to my girl grandie little tackers. They love the song...everything old is new again....it is up to we musicians who love a certain old music genre to keep it alive, whether it be bluegrass, folk, country, pop, or rock from the old days...if we don't keep it going, our kids and grandies and their grandies of the future won't know about those great songs....my grandies love the beatles thanks to my great son in law...he plays as many of the Beatles and other old albums to them. He ain't bad for a 40 old son in law who wasn't around when the Beatles finished, let alone started, so he, like me, is doing his bit, via track and me on uke, or guitar.

Cripple Creek, the song that most aspiring bluegrass players learned first. Great song, slow or fast, and the Dillards are great!!

For those who don't recognize it, this tune was the basis for Hee Haw's "Pickin' and Grinnin'" segment.

Josh Benton Thanks for listening. I have several Bluegrass Playlists, but I especially remember my Dillards/Fast Bluegrass if you enjoy this style. Have fun if you check it out. My best, Moppet

I think this is played extremely very well in spite of the speed. You may also like Dave Hum's second version of cripple creek here on RU-vid where he has some fun with it.

It's played at Dillards' speed. They were accused of speeding up the recording when they released "Backporch Bluegrass". That's why their next album was "Live Almost", to prove that they are actually playing at that speed.

yeah its fast, but sometimes songs just need to be played at blistering speed.

I agree. Be it beyond me to criticize Doug Dillard; as it goes without saying that what he did, he did very well. But that was not the way we like to hear Cripple Creek.

One of them "invented" clawhand banjo playing. If you watch them play, sometimes you can't even see their fingers moving; just a blur of speed. They are known to have influenced the Eagles, Elton John, and other musicians. Also got Led Zeplin to try some other instruments.

Way to fast, Earl Scruggs version is great but another fiddlers version is the one I grew up with is Johnny Deison. He was a local Texas fiddler.
@MyMoppet52
@MyMoppet52 8 лет назад
yes, it is fast. I am used to the slower versions. Learned to clog to Cripple Creek in NC. I like the fast version also. The Dillards are fast. If you don't want fast, I'd pass them by. You are correct in that this isn't the traditional manner in which to play the song. Thanks for stopping by, Moppet

You should listen to the version by the Stonemans, from a TV show segment, on RU-vid. Flying low, especially after the slow start. The vocal version of this song might be considered a little risqué even by modern standards 😈!
