The Dirlewanger Brigade. The Worst of the Worst.

In 1940s Germany, one of the worst military units was created to suppress partisans in the conquered territories. Dubbed the Dirlewanger Brigade, after its commander, its ranks consisted of the lowest criminals the Reich had to offer. From 1940 to the Wars end, they would burn a trail of terror across Eastern Europe, cementing their reputation as the worst of the worst.

There was a draft and regular men had to join the Wehrmacht. From all social backgrounds. My granddads had to as well. They hated the war and the Nazis, still had to fight or be executed. They didn't have a single good word for the SS or other NS-criminals. They were happy when everything was over and they survived. After the war: American zone.
@justicartiberius8782

They weren't really nazis though but quite the opposite. They gave nothing to the government and the political ideology, they were drafted criminals, even anti-fascists that were political enemies of the nazis. They were forced to fight and committed crimes to surive. Nothing "nazi" about that, it's just selfishness and having no morale values. I think there are few terms that are used so wrong and is mostly so misplaced as the term "nazi". Those guys were SS but they were not Nazis. Hard to comprehend, right?

But stories about the atrocities of the losers are always used to conceal the atrocities of the winners. @@jimomaha7809 Remember Nagasaki and Hiroshima? They were purely attacks on civilians. Also Dresden. In Germany, it was the *stated policy* of the allied bombing campaign to destroy 40% of civilian housing. Targeting civilians is a war crime. After the war, German prisoners were kept as slaves and exported to various countries around Europe where most were starved to death. All countries had to do was apply to SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) to get an allotment of German slaves. Few of thoe who went to the Soviet Union ever returned. France applied for 700,000 and received 340,000. Half of them died in captivity. In postwar Germany itself, all males aged 12 to 65 had to report for labor battalion work and if they did not turn up they had their rations cards revoked. Yes, the punishment was starvation. I could go on at some length with lists of Allied mass-atrocities of WW2. And that is without even mentioning the bestial Stalin and the Soviet Union, where the army were exhorted to advance on Germany and "Rape and rape and rape!" After the war, 15 million ethnic Germans were expelled from Eastern Europe - Prussia, Poland, Lithuania, Ukraines, etc, where their ancestors had lived for a thousand years. Of course, millions died.

If you watch “Come and See” you will have some idea of what they were able to show in a film format. It’s free to watch here on RU-vid.I think it’s fairly obvious now that Dirlewanger had suffered numerous head injuries and we now understand how this affects the ability to control one’s aggression and impulse control. It’s amazing how many serial killers have been subject to head injuries especially concussions / periods of unconsciousness and Doctors conclude this has a huge impact on their personalities. Not good to hit your head , full stop. Permanent character changes and increase in erratic and aggressive behaviour. You can see the scar/s on his forehead.

They decimated the Axis forces in one battle after another, reversing the loss ratios they suffered in the first part of the war. One account on the slaughter with the 350 children in the school was from a guy in the demo squad who was sent ahead to blow doors and obstacles for the SS behind em. He talked very bad about the SS he hated em. Well, he blew the door to that school and was shocked to see all the kids there with hands raised. And as him and his men were frozen and didn’t know exactly how to react then behind them came storming in the SS and they were told (SS were told by SS command, not the German soldiers doing the demo) to kill them all. And what I understood was they did shoot many of them but even then they went over each one as to smash their skulls in with the stock of the weapons and he said the stair case looked like a waterfall of blood. Later on he says one of the officers of that SS unit was hated by him and his squad that they decided to kill him, they had 8 rifles and 2 were loaded and they shot him in the back and ran. He later deserted and found a farm somewhere and was treated and kept hid by polish farmers so they didn’t know who he was and have him killed. Just truly horrific detail.
