We are back with The Dirt on our deep water well that was installed on our off grid homestead property. We answer your questions about the well including why install a deep well? Will you have your water tested? Why didn't you use a DC submersible pump? ...and the big question how much did it cost?

I've been following ya'll for awhile now and I have to say what a great couple you are. Both being help mates to one another. Very refreshing to see. Your plans are thought out and so organized. You take care of your property and are clean people. I've watched other homesteaders that have no clue, not planned out what it takes to make this type of lifestyle a success. Anyway wish you all the best and long life together. Having a soulmate to go through the ups and downs, there's not much you can't overcome and achieve. Much blessing upon your lives.

I really enjoy your "The Dirt" videos. Why? Because so many great questions have been asked and answered. It makes the project seem more realistic vs. a staged infovideo. Again, it is amazing how much research and pre-work you do before tackling a project. I'm going to guess you knew the price range prior to starting the well. No surprises. This is GREAT project management....which you both excel. Can't wait to see the generator install.

Something to consider in your construction planning, if you haven't already, is requiring lien releases upon payment for work and materials, requiring a licensed contractor to provide you with a copy of their certificate of insurance that shows they have liability and workman's comp., in case someone gets hurt. If you have friends in the construction business, contractors or attorneys, they might be able to provide you with advice to protect yourself.

We have a deep well with a storage tank at the highest point on our property. Our tests came back awesome. no contaminants, no sulfur, no rust, just water and trace minerals. It is so tasty we used to take some home with us before we built our homestead! In the end, our well was $35,000.00 for a well designed for 8 homes (with only two homes on it).

$11 grand up front is a lot for anything, but context is everything. You guys chose this property because you felt it was going to fit your lifestyle needs for many years to come and, based on your homework, probably felt assured you would be able to find water on the property. That well is like an insurance policy, a key to your continued success at living a life on your own terms. I was pleased to hear what you said about the seep spring and the possibility of a future pond. That question immediately popped into my head. Thanks!

Our well is 450 feet deep with 60 feet of steel casing, total cost of our well after pump installed and water pumped out of the ground was (rounding to nearest thousand) $31,000. But up here in our area there is only 2 well drillers and they are booked out 2 months all the time.

I've got 2 deep wells (280 and 500 ft) that were drilled in the early 70's when my 5 acres was first developed. I've been here 20 years and through 3 extreme droughts and 2 'exceptional' droughts. Niether well gives more than ~ pint/ minute a few months after the rains quit. I put in 7,500 gal of tank storage 18 years ago which helps me get through the dry times.

Great informative video! My wife and I are planning to do something similar to what you two are doing and we think we found the “property” we like but there is no well on the property. Our current home already has a well and we’re very pleased with the taste/quality of the water. I researched well digging in the area of said “property” and got so much conflicting information that it isn’t funny. This video really helps. Especially since another “property” that caught our eye already has a well on it. So your information on costs was very, very much appreciated. Keep doing what you’re doing in terms of your life style and especially the video’s. Your kind sharing of knowledge is especially appreciated by my wife and I, and I’m quite sure, many, many others. Peace be to both of you and may God bless you!

The investment you made in the well has added to the value of your land now and in the future. We are on county/utility water here with all that brings. One thing is "tiered cost levels vs water usage". We are considering a well for irrigation purposes. As we are "out West" starting to think the costs may easily swamp out the ROI of a well though for just irrigation. Time to do some investigation into this. Look forward to more videos when you post them!

All the wells here in AZ are set up like yours. I know of no one who had a pitless. Of course, we don't get the temps like you guys. And you were absolutely right.. Let the pros do the setup. For that investment, it's more than worth it. I replaced my pump and piping last year. Switched from galvanized piping to PVC. Thought about doing it myself, but yeah.. They had the truck.. LOL.. SO glad I didn't attempt it after watching them. 'Course now that it's PVC piping, maybe next time.....

Speaking about steel pipe a few years back I was helping a friend out and I met the friend on a job his Company was doing. They were replacing steel pipe with copper from the street to the house the steel pipes were less than 20 years old and the corrosion build up was so bad that you could barely fit a pencil through the 2" Inch Steel pipe they were replacing. I couldn't believe it. Seeing is believing and that blew my mind that reservoir supplies all of Boston and surrounding towns it's 65 Mile's away It's Called the Quabbin Reservoir the aquifer is an incredible build Brick by Brick, That's why they were using copper the homeowners had to pay and copper is antibacterial

I thought both of you did an awesome job of the Water Dowsing. You have plenty of trees cutting a fire break isn't going to ruin your land, it'll just add to the decade of firewood you already cut lol. I know it was a lot of dosh (& I was praying you'd strike a PL4L well that only went 80 ft or so, although that's ridiculous because you're on top of a mountain) BUT you could've drilled to 500 ft and got nothing! It could've run to $30,000 before you got decent, secure water, so it has to be a "coulda been worse" project, I'm really happy that you won't be at the mercy of the vagaries of the sink well in the new house. Are you going to try growing anything at all this year Jaime? Even if it's just in pots?

I don't know if you have a harbor freight in your area but if you do they sell a generator for around $525. Watch for sales on it. It is a 7000 watt continuous generator with 110-220 volts. It has electric start. I got one for our home 4 or 5 years ago. It works very well and runs every thing in our house as long as we don't start everything at the same time when the generator is first connected so things have a chance to catch up.

I figured it would be twice that price. I grew up near there and I had some friends that were in the well drilling trade. There was a lot of competition even back then. My grandparents farmed in that area and had wells that were much less deep, but they were on flatter land. Good luck finding contractors. Everyone is remodeling and it is hard to get general contractors and subs.

Colorado here. Seriously expensive. I’d guess an average of 35k. Ours is 265 feet deep. Water table at 90. 11k is a great deal. Oh ya, we had to add a pre filter and softener for calcium and iron. We use a Berkey, water catchment and a small RO unit for cooking water. It runs clean until we are contaminated by fracking fluid.

We had a well that fed our home. Every glass of water had a bad smell and black grains of sand in it. A string wound media filter followed by a carbon filter cleaned the water up. The string wound filters got changed every month and the carbon filter got changed every 6 months. Very affordable. With bypass, depressurization and isolation valves this was done very easily.

I wondered why you didn't install a pitless adapter. Thanks for addressing that in your video. I did a quick search about it and it seems that it *may* be permissible (in NC) in a _new_ (before the casing is cemented in) installation. Other stipulations apply as well. Too late for that now ;) Our well has a pitless adapter, I live in Northwestern Illinois, it gets cold and the frost goes DEEP here. It's the only way it will work here, everything underground. The reason for the spigot with no threads is to take a water sample. The threads on a hose bib can harbor bacteria and cause problems of give you a false positive in your E.Coli test. Your pump guy seemed to be on-point with his installation, very well done. Take care of him, and he will take care of you. Are you willing or able to share your SketchUp plans of your house? I would love to see what you have in mind.

230V pump needs much lighter wire feed over that distance, than a low voltage pump for same horsepower/watts, so that saves on buying heavy copper cable.

You don't know how good you had it. We just had a well drilled in eastern Oregon. It costs about $3,500 to drill 100 ft. We finally hit good water at 615 ft. The estimated GPM is 500-600. The static water level is 24 ft. At this point, we've spent $32,262, which includes 8-inch steel casing to 300 ft. If we have to add 6-inch casing, it will cost another $5,780. And we haven't even touched the cost of a pump, etc. The driller hit water at 60 ft, but it smelled like rotten eggs and was full of iron. Not drinkable.

It does not take a lot of money to put in a few extra pipes for a sprinkler system in your home while it is in the building process. You do not have to attach water to it but at least put the pipes in. It’s just a little more PVC or whatever they use today. Putting it in later will cost a fortune. Yes you have a fire department but I personally know people whose homes have burned to the ground up there. In the mountains the fire department does not reach you fast enough. Just a little advice from an old lady.

I like to tell a story about a neighborhood in a town I lived in. this are was where they mayor ,bank owner, grocery store owner basically the wealthiest people lived . the town council decided to go put city water and sewer in that neighborhood Inorder to reach 2 new planned schools.. the people in the neighborhood sued to prevent it. this held up the construction of the schools by 2 years costing a. pile more money. finally they reached a agreement as the sewer lines went in the residents had to hook up to sewer but they could stay on their wells. WITHIN 3 months if hooking up to sewer everyone's well went dry. they were drinking from shallow wells fed by their drain fields LMAO. ever year as a kid we would have outbreaks of typhoid fever dipthera etc. diseases like those are unheard of now . I'M A CLEAN WATER GUY

Holy shiitake that was some money you pumped out (pun intended) but the second best investment you could make in your plans. Congratulations and many blessings moving forward.

A friend had his well drilled this year. $8300. Metal casing with pitless mount 215ft deep thats it! Then had a backhoe come dig for waterlines. Still has to hire a plumber to install the pump and whatnot.......then have equipment come back and burry......pretty sure your price is better.

Wow! $11K would be a dream to pay here in Colorado. Average here is $40-$50k. One guy in my neighborhood has spent close to $100k. It's lots of money, but still a worthy investment in your home. After building your home the view will be a million dollar view so to speak. And that well cost could be recouped if you ever sold.

In addition, I completely understand the tradesman issue. My town is in a strange "Bermuda Triangle" for getting repairs and work done. I can call 10 people. And maybe get 3 calls returned and if I'm lucky one to show up. And then no guarantee that person does a quality job! I was in love with your pump guys. Fantastic job! And I know because I had to watch RU-vid to learn how to diagnose and fix my own cistern pump and pressure tank. My pressure tank was set way to high and I wasted so much electricity. I only live about 5 Mike's from town and on decent dirt roads, but hard to find quality tradesman. Watch them like a hawk when you start building. Best of luck!!

Well done! A little side tracked here, but where you are building, do you overlook your temporary dwelling? Thinking of the cleared area, and if you are going to keep your animals there? Would love to se a drawing of the future homestead layout. Thanks.
