I agree Ben was amazing and screwed by politics, but he didn't even run the 200. Bolt totally dominated both 100 and 200 for over a decade, and could have been winning the 400 too had he run it. So definitely the best sprinter in history, since he is an all around sprinter which Ben is not.

Seeing and hearing how track and field was here (America) during those times, I was so lucky to be in Germany during this Olympics! King Carl was treated as a King in Europe (most great track athletes were at the time). I heard he was treated equally if not better in the Asian Countries. The 1988 Olympics is possibly the best Olympics ever! I remember almost every event, especially this one like it was yesterday! Ben Johnson set up this showdown by beating Carl in Rome. That was also a fantastic event! I miss those days when Track and Field was on top of the world! :(
If 6 out of the 8 finalists (apparently including Lewis) were also linked to doping; then they should not only have disqualified Johnson. If the others' were not disqualified, then Johnson''s gold should still have stood. He was the fall guy!

Crossed by the greatest hypocrisy ever seen in sport. Carl Lewis, Linford Christie both Olympic gold medalists were caught in doping. The American with a physicist wide open by Anabilziantes (Florence Griffith-Joyner) was never caught. Ridiculous. For me Ben will be remembered for being an extremely strong runner with a strong start and after getting upright to increase his speed and be steady, something no sprinter in the world has ever done. Bolt starts poorly, but Bolt is on another level. Ben was 20 years ahead of his time.

Ben was not the first, nor will he be the last to use performance enhancing drugs. Just look at Russia, it was the norm there. I liked Ben back then and I still do today.
I am surprised no mention was made of the other participants apart from Ben and Carl. There was Linford Christie and Calvin Smith who made up the first four. There was also Jamaica's Raymond Stewart. Calvin wrote a book suggesting that he should have got the gold because Christie, Lewis and Johnson had been juiced. There is good reason to believe that Calvin is right and the fact that Johnson was disqualified just made him the scapegoat of high level doping. By reliable accounts there were several juiced Americans that their federation protected, like Florence Griffith-Joyner who recorded improbable times and got away with it. All this renders Ben's persecution meaningless. Still it is good to keep the sport clean, juice can kill, it can shorten the life span and it is unfair for talented athletes to be losing to people who are not as good, because of juice. Merlene Ottey lost many medals to juiced athletes and Marion Jones robbed Pauline Davis of the Bahamas on the 200 metre gold at Sydney.

Go and look at her times a year or 2 before this..... she was rubbish and you do NOT make those gains as she did by hard work........ she was juiced to the eyeballs and paid for it with her life, they say otherwise, those drugs in her system I am sure have an effect to whatever were the final reasons for her death!!!

Calvin Smith and Robson Silva were the 2 athletes in the 1988 100m Olympic final that never tested positive in their whole career. Christie tested positive due to drinking ginseng tea, which I believe was true.

I was working in one of the Military Bands in south Norway, we had just finished a concert in Fredrikstad(Norway), we all new that the Final should start very soon.., and we sat in 15 different cars with doors open listen to the radio, and we couldn't belive the result 9.79!

Me too is ben's fan. I watched the 1988 race over the tv. I was working with a bank that time, i was 31 y.o that year. I had to take 5 from my work to watch the race life over a tv at the restraunt nearby. I dont believe he consumed the banned drug on purpose. It is a scandal of the centuries.

They've all been using PED since the inception of the Olympics. It's absurd and nieve to think all sports people aren't. Although one does have to belong to the elite to give one an edge. What baffles me is how is coach got the cycle so wrong. The athletes are using an array of muscle growth-lung diallators to reach the top from sarms like ligandrol or clenbuterol for instance. However.. you cant compare anabolic steroids with herbal stimulant that was showed in Lewis sample... and his level was so low.. thats today wouldnt be even consider doping.. That was the only failed test result the USTAF leaked. No doubt there were others. Carl was a dirty as anyone else in that race. The thing was he was the golden boy of american track and field and no way in hell were they going to let him fall. It was all a massive cover-up.

Reason for the "bad blood" between Charlie Francis and the Canadian Athletics Federation was because Francis had convinced all these young athletes that they couldn't win without doping (which may be accurate but is also wrong and criminal) and separated them from the regular athletes, trainers, and doctors. And ultimately, the biggest embarrassment for any sports federation up until that time.
