Did you try using a TDS meter? I know when you buy a Zero Water filter system a TDS meter comes with it to check your parts per million. They also have a realistic chart that comes with the system that gives you a general feel for how long each filter will last depending on the type of water and where you get it. So Zero Water also comes with a chart too. If it does not read 000 on the TDS meter then you have contaminants. When it gets to 006 you have to change the filter. The PPM on our city water out of the tap through a house water filter is 85 PPM. When I send that through the Zero water filter the same TDS meter reads 000. So maybe Zero Water truly is one of the few filter companies that tells you up front, hey, you may get a month use out of this filter realistically. Plan on replacing each filter once a month or longer depending on what water you filter, its source and how often. I would suggest purchasing a TDS meter if you want a true water reading. I only know one water filter system on the market that gets you down to Zero contaminants and that is why they have their product aptly named. =^_^=

I am a water treatment plant operator. I can't speak for Berkey, but I have an Alexapure pro water filter and I am very happy with it. You have to use a little common sense when it come to these filters. The dirtier the water you're filtering, the more often you need to change your filters. When it starts filtering slower, your filter is getting clogged up and needs to be changed. If you had no other water source, I'd boil your water after filtering it if you're still concerned about bacteria, etc.I'd much rather have one of these than nothing at all when the shtf.

I rely on the Red Dye test to ascertain if molecules of that size and larger are filtered out. PPM/TDS test meters tell you virtually nothing since all of the important molecules (yes, the following are atoms but they are generally diatomic or linked to other atoms) like Potassium, Calcium, Sodium, Manganese, Iron, etc. are small enough to pass through the filter...which is a good thing.

The Alexapure filter water came out at 240...more polluted than just leaving it tap water. Mind you this was an Alexapure filter used for 2 years, but it shows they obviously only last around the 200 gallons they are tested for. So far I got about 40 days of use out of one zerowater filter but I've seen some people's don't even last a month.

We use an Alexapure unit here. As some mentioned below, I think the longevity of the filter is contingent upon the kind of water that is inputted. If you are putting pre-treated tap water directly into the unit, it works far better and far LONGER than dumping unstrained, , greenish, creek or lake water in it... or water collected from questionable sources. I think a lot depends on how OFTEN folks will disassemble the unit and CLEAN said filter! We do it religiously every 2 weeks here. We wipe it down and get the residue buildup off of the filter wall, and I bought a cheap rubber primer piece from Berkey, and it unclogs the filter when it begins running noticeably slower. So all that said? We use only 1 filter in the unit... we have 13 animals and 4 adults that consume the water from the Alexapure, which I recently changed after 1 FULL YEAR when the water started tasting less purified. So.... How many gallons in a year have gone through that filter? Answer.....I have NO clue! lol A LOT! WAY more than 200 gallons..... but most likely less than the 5000 Alexapure advertises. MD's correct.... these gravity fed units DO have their quirks and drawbacks. And ya gotta stay on top the filter cleaning for logevity. Wise to do anyway, as they don't exactly GIVE these filters away! But I'm happy with this Alexapure unit.

It's a hard issue to grab hold of bc we all have a investment into gravity filters. But the bottom line is Berkey has and continues to claim 3000 gallons per filter with NO scientific testing to back the claim. Only tested to 200 gallons on tap water. Tested to 1100 gallons for lead and failed after 1100.

I use ProPure water filters only, their Filters are tested and certified by 3rd Party labs, they do NOT test their own Filters. lot's of people I know use ProPure Filters in their Berkey systems. To get Flouride out of your water Berkey wants you to pay extra for their better filters NOT the Filters they send out with their systems. It doesn't really matter how fast it is what matters is WHAT it takes out. The faster the system the less pure the water. Richie From Boston has been using BB for years and loves it. He also said on his Overland channel that BB filters actually get better at filtering the more they're used. They also can be used indefinitely. Once they start clogging up, you just blow them out with an air compressor, or canned air. I was up in the air about which water filter to get for a long time. Then I found out with Health Ranger's Mike Adams, who tested some WF's, and the BB scored very well. He has a very expensive certified professional lab, mind you. I also discovered that they were banned in the Communist State of California, and that the EPA was trying to ban them as well, nationwide. They're the only WF company the EPA is attacking... Along time ago I watched lds prepper do a video on the Berkey system. He even added water from a drainage ditch to it and his family drank it. I said right then that's what I wanted. As the years went by I myself have put water in it from my pond, the creek and so on. I'm still here and never got sick. The only problem I ever had was the price of the filters. So as most folks I bought some so called filters from Amazon that claimed to be Berkey filters but were half the price. These didn't do anything really and barely passed the dye test. I contacted Berkey and was told if those filters didn't come from them directly or a authorized dealer they were fake. They did not sale their filters any other way. Since then I have bought my filters from them. It's hard to say in this law suite what filters folks were using. I imagine it's the cheap ones from Amazon that aren't the real stuff and have failed the testing. People always want to buy cheap and you get what you pay for. Still I have used water from the pond just showing friends how it works. About that testing lab, when you look into it, they charge a fee for each test. So if your filters do 100 things that's 100 x fee for each thing = I couldn't afford them. I'll just wait and see what happens. I would hope you wouldn't trash these guys til this thing is over. @@katherinebruce500 With all due respect, where did you get those numbers, Katherine? 600 ppm of what? 20 ppm each of 10 beneficial minerals like Sodium, Potassium, Selenium, Iron, Zinc, etc. will FAR exceed your baseline but would be important for good health (which, I'm sure, is why most tap water reads about 220 ppm out of the faucet). You need to get a copy of your complete Water Quality Report and find out why your reading is so high. My guess would be too much Iron from old pipes (which is bad for men). Gravity filters do not filter out minerals which is why your TDS meter reading won't change post-filtering. If you can't find anything from your WQR, then you need to have your tap water tested to find the culprit(s).

I will confess however that upon installing brand new filters you will get high ppm for a while and this is due to carbon from the filter itself and is not harmful at all. I ran water that was in a storage tank underground for well over 5 years and the filters clogged up during the first run of filling due to the micro organisms but the water that actually passed through the filters I drank and was fine. I think all this negative attack towards Berkey is all due to not properly identifying what the ppm actually is which is the carbon from the new filters which takes time to pass through.

Now, it doesn't say what type of water. I've always used tap water. I've had my Berkey for 5 years and when I went to open the spigot, water came out, but then this SNOT like substance was hanging. Plus the filters were covered in filthy black smut! I'll tell you what I did to clean it. 1. Use very hot tap water to soak the filters in. 2. Then clean the hardware/container inside and outside. You can use soap. 3. If you have an air compressor, buy a blower to hook up to the air compressor. Put the blower up to the bottom of the filter and slowly turn it on. Then turn it on almost full blast. You'll see all the black and green gunk escaping the filter. That means it's cleaning it. Do that at least 3-5 times with the hot water in the filters. Trust me. It WORKS!!! Then get some pipe cleaners and clean out the spigot. You'll be good to go! I did it and it works like a champ! These filters will last forever if you clean them this way. We are blessed to have very good well water so any filter would have been for a long-term issue which would affect electric, and then failure of my pump or energy backup. So it seemed superfluous. Instead I finally bought activated charcoal, sand and gravel as well as five gallon buckets for a homemade system. I have all the parts but won't ever put it together unless I need it. I'm sorry if people have been scammed - dollars aren't easy to come by.

When Im out camping I always pre filter any water source using an simple t-shirt or coffe filter. Then the most mudd and sedement will be removed. That makes any filter last any longer. A filter that only needs to filter Bacteria or viruses will last much longer.

I still have my Berkley on the countertop but I stopped using their filters a couple years ago when I heard about all this. I use Greenfield Aquametix filters that have the NSF certification. I will keep using these unless something better comes up!

I was thinking aboit the PortaWell system since it's a pressurized system (basically uses a pump with a house filter system all in one), but NSF has no product cert on their site that I can see (but since the filters are house filters, those might be certified). The video I saw on it had one comment that mentioned it's pump pressure seems high enough to be able to put a reverse osmosis component into it & that would probably do pretty good for NSF certification. Ideally, a powered system like this with manual lever action override would be best. Couple that with a strong pre-filter, carbon & KDF chambers and that should knock out a lot of chemicals as well.

Many years ago I read some scathing reviews on the berkey, so I didn’t buy it. I did pick up catadyn/katydn gravity system. I initially bought it from some missionaries and have bought replacement filters. It will be a back up to boiling, this brand appeared to be used overseas. I think it is made in Switzerland. I’m glad that I didn’t pay for the berkey system, but if users are not getting ill, maybe it is helpful?

Nobody that has been using berkey or other water filter's have complained until this lawsuit! Is it possible that they actually do a pretty good job? All the food recall's have been proven to be not so truthful so is this lawsuit happening at the perfect time to throw people into upheaval? I don't know, but something seems wrong about this sudden problem even though people have been giving high praise on the system for year's🤔🤔🤔

Mr. Creekmore: Simply take a water sample to your County Health Department. They will do a thorough test with your sample and probably end up giving you more information than you care to know. There may be a fee.

M. D. Thank you so much for sharing your research and honest opinion about Berkey water filters. I brought this subject on another You Tube channel I used to follow (past tense). With NO research, other than they claimed they had their water tested (sure) they said they stood firmly by Berkey. So they had their well water tested, which already passed the water dept test, and after it was run through the Berkey it passed. So guess what, all is well as far as they're concerned. So WHY did they go to the expense of buying a Berkey? I was heavily attacked just for bringing the subject up. I am building a DYI water filtration system and I thought about buying a Berkey filter. That's how I stumbled onto the law suit and they guy who is doing the research and man are "they" tearing him apart. He's a good person, very passionate and he backs up what he talks about as to why Berkey is a sham ripping people off. Nice stainless steel casing though, but I'll settle for a couple of food grade buckets myself. All this guy is trying to do is educate those of us who are capable of listening and understanding what he is sharing. I have a Bachelor's of Science degree so I'm basically trained to "get it" because of the discipline I was educated in. Not ALL education is a waste as some would want you to think. Clearly M.D. you know "how" to read wording in a claim and see when they're just giving you a lot of fluff that is backed up by total bull. Thank you again for what you do. Sincerely.

if you prefer stainless steel instead of buckets, just buy 2 stainless steel pots that stack and drill holes for the filters and a stainless spigot.i would do this before ever passing 3=$400 for what are basically 2 pots anyway.
