There are some similarities between the stories of USS Cyclops and SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Both were long and narrow and both were bulk carriers with a history of being overloaded. On the previous voyage of Cyclops, she was carrying almost 10,000 tons of coal from Norfolk to the South Atlantic. On the next voyage, her last, she was to carry 10,800 tons of manganese ore from Rio de Janeiro to Baltimore. One important fact: her cargo capacity was 8,000 tons. In other words, her hull strength was designed and built to withstand a cargo not to exceed 8,000 tons. But, it appears that her owners routinely had her sail overloaded. She made that unscheduled stop at Barbados when it was discovered her hold was flooded with water. She departed Barbados, bound for Baltimore, never to be seen again. Was there an investigation at Barbados TO DETERMINE IF HER HULL WAS DAMAGED? Apparently not. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was discovered to have broken in half and she sank so fast no SOS could be sent. I suspect the same thing happened to Cyclops.

Yep, makes the most sense.

I completely agree. Most of these theories can be eliminated right away. 4 identical ships of that class, and three sank without getting off an SOS. That means sudden, catastrophic failure. And all three were carrying a heavier ore, not coal. A sister ship that didn’t sink was having rust chipped off of her hull, and the crewman’s hammer went through the hull. When he went in to retrieve it, he discovered that the longitudinal I beams that made up the inner bracing of the hull had rusted away, leaving only rusted marks to show where they had been. I believe this was the USS Jason. But sea monsters didn’t drag down a 542’ ship, aliens didn’t take them, they’re not in a shipyard in Atlantis. You’re right, there is always a logical explanation. Difference between an unsolved mystery and something easily explained is ONE SURVIVOR. This didn’t happen, so it was over with fast.

thats a good theory that they already been came up with lmao

Thank you. Like the SS Edmund Fitzgerald , it likely broke in the middle and the two halves sank like stone. USS Cyclops caught a sniper U-boat shot.

There's just one problem. They found the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald just five months after she sank. The USS Cyclops, 542 ft (165 m) long, 65 ft (20 m) beam,19,360 tons displacement, has never been found.

To be honest, I can't see a mystery in the Cyclops' disappearance. Sea lanes are no different than lanes on a highway, a busy road has more accidents than a quiet one and this is a busy part of the ocean. The ship had one engine broken, it was overloaded and it was in an area where extreme weather isn't a rarity. It was also wartime, in addition to submarines the Germans had been using armed merchant ships to attack British shipping since 1915. Enjoyed your telling of the tale, with your less outlandish conclusions lol. I hadn't been aware of the German sympathy theory, however I should point out that the Carroll A Deering's disappearance in 1921 was initially blamed on pirates from the newly formed Soviet Union. It seems like most people believe whatever stories greedy newspaper editors print to sell newspapers. 😉

It's eerie the the vessel's sister ships met similar fates too, either also mysteriously vanishing or meeting their fates in the next war due to U-Boats.

The USS Cyclops and US Navy Flight 19 are the two most infamous disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle, and the possible explanations for one never really seem to align with the other.

I read that Worley had the bizarre habit of touring the Cyclops’s main deck clad only in his long underwear, a bowler hat and carrying a walking-stick.

I tend to think it was just captain error with an overloaded cargo, big wave hits it sideways and its gone before an SOS is sent

i think the mystery behind this is the following: deep down at the bottom of the oceans floor are black smokers when these spit out a bit more and when the sea is very calm it could be possible to form gas in the water that could make a big ship sink very fast.

Imagine having to sail on the open ocean with a cracked cylinder and an overloaded hull. No thanks 😮

This Captain sounds exactly like Captain Bligh..Same treatment of his men for no good reason.. By the way does anyone remember s story about a ship from.. I can't remember but it's in the 20s-60s..but the date isn't as important as what happens when..A crew of soldiers was hiking in the jungles of SE Asia and went into a big cave with narrow openings going down.. The crew neared the bottom and then heard a thunk metallic noise like a big empty steel vessel.. The lights were difficult because of little room but they finally could feel around the dirty surface to unveil a few letters..USS.. I can't remember the name..thats why I'm asking if people know. Anyway.. these men had found a ship that looked modern for their day as they hadn't built anything like this before.. but the strange thing is that the date is 1890 and this show went missing in 1960s.. so how did the huge ship get into the bottom of a large cave when you couldn't possibly bring it through the front and there was no way in from underneath that made any sense it was as if it teleported into that deep cave, because there's no other way it could have gotten in. does anyone know the true information about this missing ship? Thanks please let me know.

Must be videos posted by AIs because there is another one on this same ship posted at the same time. Is it this ships anniversary or something?
