Arwen is a 14'6" yawl designed by famous New Zealand boat designer, John Welsford. In this video, I head off searching for dolphin and whales off Plymouth Sound and try to eliminate the ever present throat to clew crease once and for all.
I built Arwen over two and a half years in my garage and she was launched in 2010. Since then we have cruised the rivers and coastal waters of South Devon and Cornwall. You can follow our adventures at Arwen's blog www.arwensmeanderings.blogspot.co.uk or here on her RU-vid channel where you can download videos or themed playlists / plymouthwelshboy .
Drop us a comment, subscribe to our channel and blog, click the notification bell and stay in touch. My thanks to all those who have helped me remove the crease - particularly John, Joel, Tim, Kurt, Jim and Frank.
If you would like me to address a particular dinghy cruising aspect, from my beginner's perspective, in a forthcoming video - then drop me a line below and if you have any nice, constructive, friendly advice to improve my sailing skills, please do let me know and thank you.

@@plymouthwelshboy I have taken the plunge and bought a boat, (a bit bigger than a dinghy) an old Achilles24 (they have been described as oversized dinghies by a friend of mine 🤣🤣)that needed alot of work done as it sat in a yard for a decade. About halfway there with it. I hope to be afloat in the spring.

@@TonyKeyes and let’s face it Tony, east coast Australia has been rubbish since October last year. La nina, east coast lows, floods, yeesh! With respect, I didn’t think I would be hanging out to see blue sky in Plymouth to keep my spirits up!
@dirtywetdogboatsandsailing6805
Wow.......so much better steve, when the breeze kicked in a bit I could see the whole boat power up and accelerate. The great thing about a powered up rig is that it can be depowered - it can just take a bit of time to 'calibrate' to the feel of the rig. Big boats have their place I feel.....I came from a background of maxi yachts and they are by far at their best when they are doing something a lot more serious and not doing a predictable milk run. One time I came across the old F&P anchored off Cawsand, circled her in my Liberty and spoke with the crew.....most of whom weren't even born when we raced against her down in the big chilly bin.

'Can there be anything better ...?', well, Conan the Barbarian had thoughts on the same question and replied, "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women.", though, in this instance, I don't suppose the genres mix too well. :) Thanks for the vid.

REALLY enjoyed this video. Pots are an unregulated pain everywhere, at Harwich the authority have a parked yacht track which is littered with pots, i saw a yacht's rudder get caught in one last week, which resulted in the cost of a lift to check and repair the damage, so i feel the placement of pots should be better policed.

Good video. About ropes (and anything long that needs to coiled now and then…) - they have a sinister and mean attitude so that e.g. if you coil a rope nicely and put it out of your sight for even a few seconds - then as you need it again, whatever the time elapsed, it has writhed to a tangle that takes longer to clear than the original coiling… garden hoses are the worst as they can also kink themselves so that water will never again go nicely thru them… Really good to see the sail set nicely. How did you attach the camera to gaff?
@plymouthwelshboy

That is so true......remember when Indy fell in the pit of snakes? That's my aft cockpit.....full of snaking pieces of string 😄

Looks like you raised the heel of the sprit boom as well. Did that help?
@plymouthwelshboy
@plymouthwelshboy Год назад
That did. I think the higher more act tie on point on the top yard helped in some way as did moving the snotter location up on the mast

Which slipway is it you are launching from? I have seen the Elphinstone and Commercial slipways recently but that reminds of the one I used when I was at uni many years ago :-)
@plymouthwelshboy
@plymouthwelshboy Год назад
I use QAB slipways. It costs but I can store car and trailer quickly and safely and there is space to tie up at pontoon for sorting myself out. Many use the free slipway over at mountbatten but parking is on the road or in the car park about 100m away and there is nowhere to tie up the boat if launching single handed

I just try anything until something works...normally either downhaul tension, sprit boom another adjustment or easing something......done very quickly...something works before a disaster happens ...... 🤔😄
@kimmccullough6802
@kimmccullough6802 Год назад
Crease can be adjusted by loosening pull at end if crease. Scallops, waves between corners can be adjusted by pulling corners tighter.
@plymouthwelshboy
@plymouthwelshboy Год назад
As.it so happens on this occasion I shifted the halyard tie on point on the yard further aft. Then i moved the snotter position further up the mast and then I altered the downhaul tackle to increase purchase.....and something worked...now you are good Ng to ask me which one nick and to be honest I have no idea.....🤔🙄🤔😁🤣
