In July 1849, the Hungarian Revolutionary Parliament proclaimed and enacted the first laws on ethnic and minority rights in the world. It gave minorities the freedom to use their mothertongue at local administration, at tribunals, in schools, in community life and even within the national guard of non-Magyar councils. However these laws were overturned after the united Russian and Austrian armies crushed the Hungarian Revolution. After the Kingdom of Hungary reached the Compromise with the Habsburg Dynasty in 1867, one of the first acts of its restored Parliament was to pass a Law on Nationalities (Act Number XLIV of 1868). The situation of minorities in Hungary were much more better than in contemporary pre WW1 Europe. Other highly multiethnic /multinational countries were: France Russia and UK. See the multi-national UK: The situation of Scottish Irish Welsh people in "Britain" during the English hegemony is well known. They utmost forgot their original language, only english language cultural educational institutions existed. The only language was English in judiciary procedures and in offices and public administrations. It was not a real "United" Kingdom, it was rather a greater England. See the multiethnic France: In 1870, France was a similar-degree multi-ethnic state as Hungary, only 50% of the population of France spoke the French language as mothertongue. The other half of the population spoke Occitan, Catalan, Corsican, Alsatian, West Flemish, Lorraine Franconian, Gallo, Picard or Ch’timi and Arpitan etc... Many minority languages were closer to spanish or Italian language than French) French governments banned minority language schools , minority language newspapers minority theaters. They banned the usage of minority languages in offices , public administration, and judiciary procedures. The ratio of french mothertongue increased from 50% to 91% during the 1870-1910 period!!! The situation in German Empire was well known (Polish territories) What about Russia? Russian Empire was even more multiethnic state than Hungary (60% of the population was non-russian), without the existence of minority rights. The forced russification is also well known Just look the contemporary pre WW1-era Europe: Magyarization was not so harsh as the contemporary western European situation, because the minorities were defended by minority rights and laws. Contemporary Western European legal systems did not know the minority rights, therefore they covered up their minorities. Just a short comparison between Hungary and pre-WW1 Western European states: 1.Were there state sponsored minority schools in Western European countries? NO. 2. How many official languages existed in Western-European states? Only 1 official language! 3. Could minorities use their languages in the offices of public administration in self-governments , in tribunals in Western Europe? No, they couldn't. 4. Did the minorities have own fractions and political parties in the western European parliaments ? No, no they hadn't. 5. What about newspapers of ethnic minorities in Western Europe? They did not exist in the West.... We can continue these things to the infinity.

Hungary attempted to forcibly Magyarize its minorities. Apponyi closed down ALL Slovak-language high schools in the 1890s and then complained that the Slovaks were uneducated because they refused to attend Hungarian-language schools. Trianon was punishment for Hungarian oppression. It was a great treaty that led to the creation of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. Justice. Hungarians have been crying about their losses. All they lost were their undeserved privileges, NOT their rights. Here's a lesson for you Magyars - mistreat others and you yourselves will be mistreated.

The idea of the Habsburg regime as a liberal autocracy is an interesting one given the events of 1848 and the role of major figures such as Metternich.

29:55 That's not true. The United States was only a linguistically homogeneous state during the 18th century. At the beginning of the 20th century it was already a country, at least bilingual (counting only Spanish and English).

Putin was part of KGB - and Bush was head of CIA. So what? OK for Bush to head up his country's secret service, but not Putin. Should Russia not have had a secret service?! His Yankee view erodes his attempted scholarship.

Putin was a failed KGB officer who had a nervous break-down when East Germany collapsed. No, Russia doesn't need a new KGB/OGPU/Cheka/FSB/NKVD

Outrageous. Many of Ingrao's factual statements are, at least, debatable, but skip this and go right to the main objection. Besides basing all his theorizing on "geopolitical" (so is, pseudoscientific) lucubrations, Ingrao devises a rosy idealization of the Habsburg monarchy. It was always right, always positive, progressive and tolerant, all the time defending the weak against agressors. It seems it hadn't its own interests; maybe it became a huge empire just by mistake while passing by. Maybe Habsburg's paternalistic authoritarianism was better than democracy. Maybe all those nations inside were freer under foreign (German or Hungarian) domination, than being independent and ruling themselves. Maybe Franz Joseph knew the interests of Czechs better than the Czechs themselves. For instance: how can you, Ukrainians, accept somenone come to tell you your national freedom is unjust because it is a part of a "geopolitical disaster"?

Ádám Jánossy As a Croat I absolutely agree with you. My ancestors were Germans, they lived in Croatia which was part of the Hungarian side of Monarchy and these critics are so painfully ignorant about AU. Or worse - liars. We lived for 4 centuries in a multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual, multiconfessional country and even though we had issues, all in all, it was a stable, highly functional and harmonious country. These idiots don't care about facts, they have a political agenda and cannot admit that multiculturalism ever worked. Well unfortunately for them, yes it had! It worked in the Habsburg Monarchy! And even better in Austria-Hungary. Every nation had autonomy, its own parliament and government, as well as the right to use their own language. And not a single ethnicity in this monarchy disappeared, or got assimilated. Also Croats, Hungarians and Slovaks lived peacefully together for even longer than these 4 Habsburg centuries. We lived together for 800 hundred years. At least Croats and Hungarians, not sure about Slovaks. Additionally, before the Serbs killed the Archduke, the monarchy was on its way to become a reformed, triune monarchy, rather than a dual monarchy, with Croatia getting Bosnia and becoming the third main unit. The AU falling apart was a disaster for us, especially once we were pushed into Yugoslavia which we hated the entire time until we finally destroyed that Serb-dominated disaster of a country. Greetings from Croatia, my Magyar friend!
