The short story "Bloodchild" by Octavia Butler centers around a young Terran boy named Gan, who lives with his family in a Preserve on an alien world overseen by T’Gatoi, a member of the alien species known as the Tlic. The humans within the preserve live peaceful lives, and are provided for by the Tlic, but at a grotesque cost. Bloodchild was first published in 1984 in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. It later became the title story of her 1995 collection Bloodchild and Other Stories.
I’ve already covered Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis Trilogy in these video’s here. Bloodchild was written around the same time and shares some similar themes surrounding the cost humankind might be willing to pay for survival. A favorite of mine. I even used it in a TTRPG campaign, with the PCs discovering the Tlic homeworld and its human Preserves as a "lost colony". The players were, of course, horrified and nearly started a genocidal war against the Tlic before calming down and arriving at a far less drastic solution. As ever, great analysis and discussion.

Having read the work, it's equal parts fascinating and terrifying how Gatoi is presented. She isn't a xenomorph. She isn't emotionless. Its strongly suggested that her concern and compassion for the human family is genuine. And yet all the same she must effectively use them as incubation chambers.

@@SunniMerlot The idea of a fast evolving micro civilization has been done at least three other times that I know of: 1. As a story in the old Weird Science comic books that came out in the early 1950s. 2. On an episode of The Simpsons. 3. In the Mastodon video for “Sleeping Giant”.

I find myself in agreement with Butler's fear - how, too, would I cope with a parasitic insect living in my flesh? Not well, though I would hope that I would willingly let it happen to save someone else. I haven't read her works before, so, here's another work to add to my ever-growing to-read list, which has been greatly enhanced by Quinn since his early days. Thanks for the tip!

Go out and get the Xenogenesis series and this short story collection. Butler's body horror, body dysmorphia, and general questions around the body verses the self are so interesting and also so contemporary to today. Really thought provoking stuff.

Though it's never specified in the story, I think "Bloodchild" could easily fit into Butler's "Patternist" universe. The references to Gan's ancestors fleeing from being enslaved by their own kind would be consistent with how the psionically-gifted Patternists ruled over ordinary humans.

Having read this short story, it also seems to me that it mirrors women's dependency on men. How the protection of men, and their financial support, is often bound up with child birth.

The thing I love about these kinds of stories is that they can be applied to multiple aspects of life. To me it seems like this book could also be a lens to view capitalism. You see that life is full of managers and businesses that want to use you for work, but there are some places that want to exploit you, while others will use you but also nurture you and help protect you. The man who shows up could be viewed as a worker from another company who was exploited and not properly cared for by his company and he left with a bunch of bad stuff in him. It was a problematic process but he eventually gets those negative parasites removed by a proper company taking care of him.

This doesn't sound _that_ bad. As long as one has choice, anaesthetic, you get whatever powers granted. But is there freedom? The humans eating the eggs of the creatures is similar.
