The Divider brings us into Donald Trump's Oval Office for countless scenes both tense and comical

In their new book The Divider journalists Peter Baker and Susan Glasser take readers inside the Oval Office during Donald Trump's four years as President. The writers obtained unprecedented access to key players, from President Trump himself to cabinet officers, military generals, close advisers, Trump family members, congressional leaders, foreign officials and others, some of whom have never told their story until now. The stories range from the absurd to the deadly.

Don the Con Chump and the current serial lying republican party is one of the top 10 disasters in US history. Chump has done as much damage to the country and our rule of law as the worst elements of US history such as the KKK, Jim Crow laws, Senator McCarthy, and the like. Richard Nixon and Wategate was a minor event compared to the criminality and damage that Chump and the GOP have done.

But, I wish your post was not true. Sadly, for the sake of our nation, it is Truth. As a example, to get more specific, Trump's son-law took control of a reported half billion dollars of presidential campaign monies, into a private LLC. Yet I noted in other stories that at the end of campaign, they were running short of money. I have heard no one else point this out. But meanwhile others want to focus on Hunter Biden's laptop. And then Kushner gets 2 billion from the Saudis for 'investment', after serving as Trump's head of Middle East policy.

I love these interviews but I also find them so frustrating because so many Americans, including myself, saw what was happening in real time and predicted the way all of this played out months if not years before the so-called experts. Nothing that Trump did was surprising. None of it. I live within a few blocks of the Michigan state Capitol and decided to get a pistol license when I saw how nutty Michiganders were behaving at the mere suggestion that Trump might lose in 2020. There was a huge spike in licenses in this state during October 2020. That alone should have predicted some of the violence and division around the election. Further, anyone paying attention could have guessed the kinds of materials Trump would have removed from the Presidential papers to take to Mar-a-lago. He took mementos from world leaders and artifacts of ego and power. He doesn't plan on selling them or trading on them. They are porn for his overweaning ego. He always treated the Presidency like it was his person and not an institution. He has no interest in protecting the historical record because outside of his person, nothing else matters. I don't know why we spend so much time figuring him out. He is a simple, streamlined organism. Like a shark. It just eats, sleeps, and makes baby sharks. Trump must have attention, authority, and fawning admirers. That's it.

Sigh. Thanks for the interview; i feel challenged with NYT and other press also, suggesting the ‘both sides has to be equally covered ‘ when the frame of the book was about the mode and damage: honesty is most important. Seems the degradation of discord to outright crassness has been huge. Now that is normalized, how can kindness and inclusion arise?

No that statement is not true. There unfortunately are many who have held high paying white collar positions who are trumpets and Fox News followers …. I am not … but unfortunately I know many, who I thought were intelligent, who actually believe in that von man trump. I also know many who work in salons and factories who do not trust trumpets. So please do NOT lump people together by what type of work they do for a living.

I just still can't believe he was actually elected in 2016, much less that he could have gotten 70+ million votes in 2020. I had read his book in the 80s and half-way paid attention to his crappy ways of handling business since. Enough so that I voted for the most hated woman in America instead of him. And of course Uncle Joe then stepped out of retirement to save our ass from another run of his lunacy. Maybe the fast food will catch up to him before 2024.

I worry about what kind of professionals are the generals who approved Trump and supported him in his bid for presidency. What kind of ethics they have as they knew for years Trump had no ethics, no beliefs, no knowledge about history or the role of a president for a country should be. How could they go in this game? They are supposed to know the danger of a deranged ignorant who gets suddenly too much power can became for the Americans and for whole world. I believe these generals are a big question mark as they came in Trumps orbit before he won the presidency. Do generals have work ethics? What was the real reason they supported Trump?

Why aren't the requirements for Presidency more rigorous? I have heard almost nothing about this issue. He was so stunningly incompetent, and obviously so from the get-go. Yet the requirements are like a huge, open door: age, birth-place, citizenship. Really? That's it??
@pattykelly6621
@pattykelly6621 Год назад
Because the idea was always that the presidency is available to every 'man'. That the people can vote for whomever they want, not someone chosen for them. Remember, the Founders came from a society of royals and wealthy who automatically received a place at the government's table. America was not supposed to be a country of class divisions. I agree, the President of the United States should be competent, educated and have at least a rudimentary understanding of our laws, traditions and how our government works. But how do we define that without destroying that original ethos? First we require 5th grade civics, then 12th grade reading level, then college, then a law degree, then? Then we find ourselves in a situation where one party makes up a rule about when a supreme court justice can and cannot be nominated - as an example. Dangerous territory
