One of the most chilling moments for me was in May, 2017, when he stood in front of those Republican congressmen and said, "I'm the president! Can you believe it??!" And they just clapped and clapped with their stupid grins on their faces. They were all part of it.

The Trump presidency felt like being tied to a chair, watching a toddler play with a loaded gun.

ANYONE who runs for President should be required to pass a civics test and a psychological evaluation.

It was a very terrifying ride for those of us on the outside, without any real insight.

You can sum the whole thing up in one sentence: The American people elected a man to the highest office in the land who had absolute no desire to do anything to make the country or it's people better, his only concern was how he could wield power and use that power to benefit himself and his family.

I had total anxiety for 4 straight years and I KNEW it was NOT going to be a good thing for America with this lawless man in the Oval Office

The issue with Donald Trump is not his ignorance, but his contempt for laws and rules. He believes that he is the smartest guy in the world and that he is above the law.

Ok, so all these people that worked in the administration were afraid/concerned about Trump as President. Yet why aren't those people speaking out. I wish these people who usef to work in the administration would warn the public of the danger of a 2nd term of Trump.

Agreed. Lack of knowledge was the least of it. There was plenty of resources to learn. He was all about how can I circumvent "this" in order to get "that". He also took advantage of "norms" which were not necessarily laws and walked all over them. He knows how to play the game all too well---unfortunately.

She had volumes of literature and check chits from the Trump and the Republicans National Headquarters. She was always and my ancestors, were Democrats. She marched with me on several occasions in the 60s and 70s. I left the room to weep... If we don't clear this next hurdle, I believe we are done finally...

I had to listen to parts of this two or three times. I can't imagine what it must of been like working in the white house during Trump's years.

A lot of his supporters were/are just as ignorant as he is; that is a good part of his appeal. These are people who are not interested in democracy or the rule of law. Quite a few of them are in Congress.

The second sentence would be: We can chart the end of the United States as a force for good in the world to the Trump presidency.

I love these interviews but I also find them so frustrating because so many Americans, including myself, saw what was happening in real time and predicted the way all of this played out months if not years before the so-called experts. Nothing that Trump did was surprising. None of it. I live within a few blocks of the Michigan state Capitol and decided to get a pistol license when I saw how nutty Michiganders were behaving at the mere suggestion that Trump might lose in 2020. There was a huge spike in licenses in this state during October 2020. That alone should have predicted some of the violence and division around the election. Further, anyone paying attention could have guessed the kinds of materials Trump would have removed from the Presidential papers to take to Mar-a-lago. He took mementos from world leaders and artifacts of ego and power. He doesn't plan on selling them or trading on them. They are porn for his overweaning ego. He always treated the Presidency like it was his person and not an institution. He has no interest in protecting the historical record because outside of his person, nothing else matters. I don't know why we spend so much time figuring him out. He is a simple, streamlined organism. Like a shark. It just eats, sleeps, and makes baby sharks. Trump must have attention, authority, and fawning admirers. That's it.

The authors add in their epilogue to this book that American politics will never be the same after Trump and Company. Sadly, they believe that much damage has been done to our society and institutions. It is not over yet.

I just still can't believe he was actually elected in 2016, much less that he could have gotten 70+ million votes in 2020. I had read his book in the 80s and half-way paid attention to his crappy ways of handling business since. Enough so that I voted for the most hated woman in America instead of him. And of course Uncle Joe then stepped out of retirement to save our ass from another run of his lunacy. Maybe the fast food will catch up to him before 2024.

I worry about what kind of professionals are the generals who approved Trump and supported him in his bid for presidency. What kind of ethics they have as they knew for years Trump had no ethics, no beliefs, no knowledge about history or the role of a president for a country should be. How could they go in this game? They are supposed to know the danger of a deranged ignorant who gets suddenly too much power can became for the Americans and for whole world. I believe these generals are a big question mark as they came in Trumps orbit before he won the presidency. Do generals have work ethics? What was the real reason they supported Trump?
