The Division - The Game We Never Got

The Division had an explosive launch when it came out in 2016 breaking many video game records across the industry. 3 months later however, it was also the game with one of the steepest declines in its playerbase and the franchise has never really recovered from that. In this video I look at the reasons for all of these things and what Ubisoft needs to do if they had any hopes of saving this franchise.

Without getting too far ahead in the video yet, I do wanna put out there that, for all its flaws, the Division 1 had by far my favorite atmosphere in a video game. My fav Dark Zone issue: You'd have a team of four people in riot shields, protecting another team that has 'gone rogue.' If you try to shoot at the rogues, you hit one of the shielded team, flagging YOU as rogue, and then all eight of them can kill you consequence-free. The core problem is that when companies test these games, they test them with a group that is on their best behavior.

Imagine going to a cookout and complaining that you can't eat hot dogs because you don't like them... if it's not for you, it's not for you. @@OldManShoutsAtClouds I mean, the only thing you’re doing is proving him right. You could’ve made an argument about how PVP has checks and balances, and everyone should have a counter play to them but instead you attacked them personally. If you’re looking to garner more support for people that like PVP, you don’t do it by making more enemies.
@murderouspillowgaming9001
@murderouspillowgaming9001 7 месяцев назад
That being said, I don’t think the PVP was bad, but when you make the game and RPG in the PVP element is an RPG than teams automatically win. Unless you’re in the top to your percentile of skill, you’re not winning a 1v4. If it was a tactical shooter, then you would have the ability to utilize cover to the fullest advantage as well as positioning. A single player in a tactical shooter could set up an ambush with their sticky bomb gadget, and take out a couple dudes before the enemy team gets a lucky shot off on them. That’s not how it is in this game. I’ll summarize it in one sentence. If you can walk behind someone and blast them in the back with both barrels from a double barrel shotgun and they turn around and look at you like you barely tickled them it’s not a fun game play loop.

For me the DZ was just frustrating. I'm a solo player and gathering gear in the DZ solo is quite challenging. But when after multiple attempts and hours of playing I finally succeeded in getting the gear and tried to get away with it, some higher ranked player simply killed me and walked away with it. And this happened over and over again, so for me the DZ became a no-go zone. And this is not just a problem with The Division, but also with other games like it. Quite a number of higher ranked players seem to really enjoy killing off lesser ranked players. The stupid thing is that those same players are then bitching about how nobody wants to play the game anymore....... right.

Being able to shootout tires and windows just added to it all. Do you know why they took that out in Div2 and claimed every cars tires had deflated on their own from age? In order to improve the detail if your character ( so they could provide a broader range of Cosmetics to sell you) yet still have the game run on last gen consoles they had to free up gpu resources so they removed features like shooting tires. They're claim that all tires had rotted from age and non use doesn't hold up to reality. The time difference when the virus started and when Div2 takes place isn't long enough for that to be true

The Division could've easily been one of the best survival games of all time had it been taken in that direction. A gritty tactical survival game set after a pandemic in New York (which is where The Division takes place) during the wintertime. Managing resources against the elements while just barely scavenging enough to kill the next goon and take his stuff, MAN what we could've had.

I actually don‘t think it would have been a good survival game, at least not in the Multiplayer setting. Granted, urban survival shooters have shown just how good they can be, however I think there were already enough games in that niche on the market and even came out afterwards. The story would have totally taken a backseat in that genre.
@connorbaz5980
@connorbaz5980 6 месяцев назад
@@Flarilein in PvP? Yeah, probably wouldn't have been super fun. But I was really hoping for a hardcore Single Player/Co-Op campaign that was more of a tactical shooter than a bunch of disjointed, glorified fetch-quests filled with stupid bullet sponge enemies. I mean yeah eventually I got to the point where I can breeze through with my OP Striker build and wipe the floor when lowering my World Level...but that's just not fun either. Heck, they didn't even make an option to restart the campaign. Even a New Game+ would have been cool. But nope. Don't get me wrong, I like the game we got just fine. The graphics still hold up very well to this day, and the atmosphere is the best I've played in a game yet, with the possible exception of The Witcher 3 (sans the Rubbery Trees) but even then, the game could have been so much *better* than it turned out. As it is, if I was able to reboot The Division, I'd go the Tactical Shooter route, with Single Player and Co-op as the main gameplay options. Zero Multiplayer/PvP - even in the Dark Zone. For Multiplayer options (for those who want it) there would be a Matchmaking function in the Base of Operations, similar to how it is in TD1 right now. The game would not have any enemy levels. Enemy difficulty would be scaled via Weaponry, "Fitness" levels, etc. i.e. Gangbangers vs Hunters - Gangbangers being more like malnourished escaped prisoners, and Hunters being the Pinnacle of Special Operations Soldiers and Mercenaries. Fast, Violent, Stealthy just...Lethal in every way. As the motto goes "Speed, Surprise, and Violence of Action." There would also be survival aspects to consider. Nothing massively complex on the granular level, but things like a bandage system, hydration, etc. Basics of survival. Not everything has to be a sprint from combat encounter to combat encounter. Some mechanics from the Survival mode could even be implemented into the campaign. Perhaps as narrative events, or even just randomly occuring. Freezing/Clothing, Wind/Blinding Snow, etc could all pose challenges to navigating the map properly. Whether negatively impacting your holographic city map - making it completely unreadable - or screwing up Isaacs GPS function. Could also mask sounds, build up impassable snowdrifts, collapse compromised roofing, etc. Like I've said this whole time - MAKE THE ENVIRONMENT IT'S OWN CHARACTER. I could also potentially see some sort of armor system being used for bosses and PvP modes. But it'd definitely take a form similar to the armor system in (CoD) Warzone. Plates with fairly fast breakage, and great auditory feedback when hitting, or getting hit. You'd want such a system to protect enough to be useful, but not so much that it's boring/irritating to play against. Such a system would be implemented by default on forces like the JTF as well (I'd also make them much less dorky and boy-scoutish) and of course The Last Man Battalion. You would definitely have to be more accurate (facial shots would still be instant kills for example) but the armor wouldn't just defeat all thermal offensive options either. I mean it always bugged the crap out of me that things like the fire turret and thermal grenades were so anemic and useless without the "proper build." I mean there's definitely a way to tune enemy encounters properly without turning to stupidly large health and armor bars. That's just straight-up LAZY. Just look at Ghost Recon: Wildlands/Breakpoint... (BP to a somewhat lesser extent, but still.)

You failed to mention the main promise of what the division was suppose to actually be. Exploring and finding physical weapons in places and not just some color sprite on the ground showing you things to pick up. It promised an integrated pvevp environment that you’d explore and interact with across the main 4 boroughs. Randomly being in the open world with other agents in safe pve setting to randomly team up or go into the dark zone and possibly betray one another if not continue to work together is all the game needed.

The dev who thought it would be a good idea to give griefers a way to steal your loot after it was on the rope need to barred from ever working on games again. I feel the story suffered greatly compared to the originals depth. Div 2s story seemed more lke an afterthought compared to the gameplay improvements. Grew up with Div 1 and learned to love it's RPG design because it was one of the few games I had, and then came to enjoy Div 2 a couple years after it's launch. One thing they definitely did right was the atmosphere in Div 1, and especially the Cleaner faction to compliment the bleak winter. The contrast of feint embers sparking in the cold streets of New York was something to behold for my young eyes, and I was hooked on that strange nostalgic feeling; seeing the flames shed their light through the fog of winter, it was reminiscent of those hazy memories of when you'd sit by the fireplace on Christmas Eve wondering what hid behind the strange patterns of the presents marked with your name. If it were a tactical shooter, I have a feeling that the game would be a lot more claustrophobic, and the saturation would be more colorless than the current winter we have for Div 1. More realism would have to invade the game in order to properly define it as a tactical shooter; there wouldn't be any fun ISAC orange division tech effects, gear sets would obviously be removed or at least replaced with something more practical like classes similar to specializations in Div 2, and skills would be limited to extremely tactical uses. My favorite ballistic shield wouldn't exist, and many of the stylized skills like the hive/support station wouldn't even be considered; the balancing for those skills in a tactical shooter would either completely cheese the game or get nerfed into utter uselessness. That's the last thing I would want to see, though it would've been fun if someone could've made a game that could effectively incorporate RPG and realistic elements. There's really nothing like the Division franchise, though. There hasn't been another game to emulate the modern apocalyptic setting of the series. Every other RPG I've seen is just another derivative of common fantasies and science fiction that can't even take themselves seriously. All of the "humor" they incorporate is the equivalent of a mediocre dad joke you'd tell to your deceased father's ashes after 30 years of being single. At least the first Division had the guts to take itself seriously even with the absurd premise, however, that theme seems to have dropped in the second installment whereas every single faction has amateur voice actors and painfully obnoxious voice lines trying to make you laugh with needless swearing after every other word. And then don't even get me started of some of the bullshit the devs made. I mean, who the hell gave the green light for an enemy archetype that says _"Wanna see what I can do?"_ before creaming on you with a fucking foam launcher?

If there was any wish I could see for a Division reboot, it would be an emphasis on survival and mild gear management, with survival becoming less of a problem as you progress, and gear management becoming more. Take water, food, and medicine. At the start of the game, you get some Division-grade rations that will last you past the tutorial stage. You are inteoduced to the main area via helicopter crash, but your use of rations may affect how you start. If you use any of those rations during the tutorial stage, you'll wake up after helicopter crash in a storm, forcing you to seek shelter from the storm due to ruined gear. If you don't use any, you'll have ruined gear and rations, forcing you to scavenge. You are packed light, so gear management isn't a big problem, and maybe by cutting down on maximum ammo you can carry, and limited ways to replenish, you can increase the survival aspect. By initially restricting ammo severely, I.S.A.C. (aka the guide) can point you to known locations of rations that guarantee necessities, but you will likely have to use your finite ammo to get to it. You could forego his advice and look through areas with little to no enemies, but as a Division Agent you cannot simply take from the survivors. They won't trust you anyways. (Neighborhood reputation, each the size of a 3-5 blocks worth, could also be something to look into. Low reputation is what you start at, but the more you find ways to help them, the more advantages you may have, with highest reputation giving you a safehouse to fast travel.). By the near end of the main story, your water and food are not a worry in terms of survival, but when you're full on food/water, consuming more could become temporary buffs. (e.g. Water will allow you to sprint, and overconsuming will grant faster ADS movement and cover-to-cover speeds; food is your health regen to each section of health and scavenge speed, and overconsuming grants increased damage resist behind cover and stronger melee; lastly, medicine can be environmental resistance, and overconsuming grants in-combat health regen past each section of health). As time goes on, the only things you'll have to worry about will be ammo and gear you can carry. Ammo doesn't have to be strictly managed to where you have to use whatever random ammo you find, but keep ammo amounts below 6 mags worth for each weapon. Perhaps restrict it to finding ammo for weapon-types you have in inventory first, and for your on-hand weapons to receive ammo last. You like using an SMG? SMG ammo is universal to all SMGs, but you're not going to get more until any other weapon types in your inventory are filled up, and even then you're competing against the other on-hand weapons. I have said too much already, and never even got around to losing the bullet-sponge enemies for quality-coded enemies that take real cover (and not that crappy kind where you can still headshot them) and get aggressive when you're behind cover too long, but it's just a dream for me. I don't see that dream coming to be until Ubisoft as a whole chooses to put in the quality of their games before the predictions for profits.

Honestly, I think something that really needs to be remembered is the lack of a Steam launch for Div2. At the time of launch it was a huge deal, most of my friend group that played Div1 chose to go back to Destiny rather than join us in Div2. Of 8! people, two were willing to jump over to Uplay to keep going. Without most of our friends, we trickled away quite fast after finishing the core story. Only recently with the relaunch of Div2 on Steam did we remember it and have chosen to return, this time with most of our other friends. Back then, Epic was just a competing service. But we've since seen it become a marketing and social media black hole. If a game goes Epic, people not only don't realize it launched, but they also rarely if ever get any sort of social media/word of mouth presence. The last few years have really shown that massive, massive amounts of a games social media/word of mouth presence come from PC, and if your game goes on Epic it's going to get buried under all the other games releasing. Division 2 had promise. But nobody talked about it on release. I remember you Marco, you were one of the big Div guys, so you were in that community, but as someone who dipped in and out, Div 2 had zero word of mouth response. I never knew the other specializations launched. I never heard about the DLC dropping. Warlords had a single reveal trailer that showed up on Reddit for a day or so with people begging us to check out Div 2 again, but then vanished entirely. And this is a story that's resonated across many, many Epic games. No matter how big the title is, they flash the pan then vanish entirely. For people who aren't absolutely dedicated to the franchise, they may buy the game and play it for a bit, but as soon as something new comes out to eat away at their time they take a break and never really return. Most PC gamers aren't opening their Uplay or EGS frequently, and so it becomes out of sight, out of mind. And without PC gamers pushing those word of mouth posts, eventually the community in general starts to move on. I think for all you said, something that's also important is Ubisoft really did strangle it before it had it's chance. Preorder sales for 2 were great. But where would they have been if it stayed on Steam. Would it have continued to pick up Steam, continued to sell beyond the initial community willing to make the jump to Uplay, continued to grow as Raids and more content dropped? Honestly, very likely. And while it still may not have been enough of a success for Ubisoft's insane metrics, I think it would have been enough of a success to keep the franchise alive.

I have roughly 600 hours played in both games, being The Division 1&2+DLCs. I know the lore from memory, I could basically write it down. I know most build variations from each patch, and I've done my share of Dark Zone grief. I have every achievement, and I have completed everything there is to complete in both of them. I was a top dog in the Dark Zone, and I can tell you from first perspective: The pvp and it's rewards really failed the main audience. Even with a full kill team I still had a mediocre experience at best. It simply wasn't endorphin high in any way, and it made single players experience a hell that should have been experienced like something fun. I love the games to this day. But as OT in the video states, it's not what it could have been. And it breaks my heart that there is no '3' in the works. Because even if it's not a game they promised, I would do anything to get another game that the former 2. Hell, I even settle for more DLC to the second installment. That's how much I love this franchise, even though I know I was promised a much more fleshed out experience.

No amount of skill is going to help you when you’re doing 300,000 dps and the other guy is doing 15 million (and yes that’s possible by crit stacking)

Its also the season 10 manhunt xp glitch maxing out cheaters' expertise level enhancements thatvarent having their accounts permabanned. Being monitored and given a second chance does nothing for their manipulated gear theyre trolling with in DZs now that exotics can drop there.

@MarcoStyle Brother this is the content I subbed to you for. This is brilliantly researched, written, edited and produced (Marco you sure can write and entertain man). You encapsulated pretty much the exact feelings and impressions that I had of the content you covered (You hit the nail right on the head). I wanted The Division to be an immersive tactical shooter with a great Clancy style story (BUT I still liked Div 1). Then I also had hope for D2 but we instead got more of the same. I have always hated pvp since the begining of pvp there have always been hackers and NEVER has a game merged pvp and pve well. I like many others LOVED the atmosphere of the game and was hoping for so much more. You are exactly right on when you say there is a hole in the market for a game like this and I sincerely hope your message to the devs doesn't go unheard. Marco you are a brilliant youtuber and videographer I love your content. So thanks for all of your time and efforts on your content it informs me and most importantly it entertains me. Cheers brother.

Omg Marco is back! I watched all your div 1 content back in the day, i'm one of these player who loved the game as it was, loved the environment, but after watching your video, realised that yeah, cover is out of date. This universe has SO MUCH POTENTIAL, they just have to do it right. Thanks for this video, great piece of work, also love that you are bringing solutions and not only talking about what's bad and whining about it as most content creators and players are doing.

Back when 1.8 released for D1, your videos helped get me into the game. I really miss the vibes and structure of D1, warts and all. When the game clicker, it REALLY clicked. It’s a shame Ubisoft just gave up rather than realize it as a true “third person rival to destiny”

Hi Marco, it's been such a nostalgic moment to come back to your channel after a long time, watching you talk about the Division 1 and hearing your voice. I agree with everything you've said for years. Despite all the negativity, my time in the Division 1 was a lot of fun.

About to watch the vid, but just wanted to say that I'm so glad that you're uploading more often now. Your videos are absolutely amazing, so well done and while being extremely professional, don't come across as being pretentious or missing a sense of humor. Aka, a perfect balance, really. Literally just finished your Far Cry vid yesterday and loved every second of it, felt all really ''smoothened''. 🤣 And as a fellow dutch man, ik ga nu heerlijk genieten van deze vid!

I absolutely loved the Division 1 with the cold winter atmosphere, the animals starting to infiltrate newyork, the way some things just seemed eerily untouched as just like if someone just dropped everything and ran. The back story surrounding the virus was incredibly interesting and felt inspired by Contagion or Adromeda strain with how it was presented. I absolutely hated the ending though, it would have been a better game if the origin was never explained (could have been used to further keep the game as a service).

as someone who has played the borderlands series for thousands of hours since 2009 it's crazy seeing so many games try to cram a looter shooter system in without any effort designing it to work with said game. borderlands especially works so well with gear rarity because there is so much variety between every weapon due to the gear part system instead of many recent "looter shooters" having 2 or 3 rifles and 1 or 2 of the other types of guns and just having slight damage boosts between each rarity

They should do a Hard Reboot and have it be a proper (offline) single player game, and maybe a co-op mode after the game is done being made.

Man, this takes me back to 2016 when I was given this game for my birthday shortly after launch having never heard of the game before and falling in love with it. In fact, it's also the whole reason I've ever found this channel. Really is a shame the games weren't truly given what they should have been. PS - Arguably my best memories of the game is the survival DLC from the first game, that just CAN NOT be topped. I just really wish we'd eventually see this game series get back on its feet.
@tehf00n
@tehf00n Год назад
Survival was my bread and butter for so long. It made the game for me really. Underground was a nice system too especially when you get super beefed up and can solo them. But Survival is the one thing I would take from TD1 into TD2. It was so intense managing to get good stuff and having to face the Hunters.
@justarandompersoniguess
@justarandompersoniguess Год назад
@@tehf00n yeah, like I remember in so many places in videos regarding the game (mainly trailers) people still were talking about how they wanted survival back. Not gonna lie I almost wish they made a standalone game based around the survival mode type thing. Funnily enough it would fit the bill for recent trends given it’s technically a mini self contained extraction shooter of a kind
@tehf00n
@tehf00n Год назад
@@justarandompersoniguess Yeah its kind of like what Warzone 2.0 did. Go in, kill npcs, loot, get out. They obviously knew the gameplay flow was a good one. All we need is a solid setting and it would work in any game.

Dang. I never knew TD was an RPG like this. What the heck? I always thought it was a dope sounding teamplay action shooter type deal (I don't play many games, I just keep my finger on the pulse). I can't believe they missed the mark so hard. I am amazed.
