In this video I share why I will not be buying the DJI AIR 3. I think the drone has some great features, but I don't think its a great long term business decision for most people. Instead I will stick to the DJI AIR 2S and my favourite drone- the DJI Mini 3 Pro.

I have the Air 3 having got rid of my Mini 3 Pro. Based in the UK and have absolute zero regrets. I sat my A2CofC exam and the only restriction I now have compared to my Mini 3 Pro is that I cannot fly over uninvolved people. This matters not as I have zero interest in flying over anybody. The 70mm zoom lens, better battery life, enhanced wind resistance, extra flying climbing and descent speed do grant me the freedom to do many things that I could not do with my previous drone. Couple all of this with the really really clever battery charger and frankly I am absolutely delighted with my Air 3 and would recommend it to anybody.

I've flown the Mini 3 Pro all over remote Alaska in the worst conditions. It's been awesome. With that said after flying the Air 3 today in the mountains there's no comparison in flight performance. The ascent and descent speeds are amazing and it's the most stable drone I've flown in a rapid descent. The OcuSync 4.0 is also amazing. I will miss the lightweight little Mini 3 and the smallest places you can tuck it away. The Air 3 Flymore kit is easily 3 times the weight and size of the Mini 3 Pro.

You nailed it Ian! Same thing happened to me with the Mavic Air 2! The Air 2s came out 10 months after I purchased the Air 2 and it literally destroyed me! Everything the Air 2s is, is miles apart from my Air 2! Now it literally just sits in the bag and is rarely flown! I feel the same thing will happen if/when the Air 3s jumps out of DJI! I am still so pissed! The Air 2 does not even have a true remote ID when the Air 2s does! How is this?? Tired of wasting money. Selling older drones is a great financial loss as the value quickly decreases over time. Mine is in perfect condition with all of the additions I've paid for belonging to it. Nope, not me! Not going to budge for quite some time. I'll just fly my Mini 3 Pro and my Nano Plus! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the honest opinion with excellent drone details. Another significant factor with many YT channels giving overwhelming positive reviews is receiving the drone for free along with most the accessories. I don't have a problem with it except most of drone channels that get it for free don't reveal they got if for free and that they signed an undisclosed legal contract that has limitations and requirements. They know that free products will continue to flow in the future if they pull their punches. Such videos are far more like product demos, than a unbiased review. I bought my DJI Air 3 with my own funds, moving up from a low end $300 drone.

I've been waiting for a similar comparison on your channel for a long time. In my city, the difference is only $300. If you buy a Battery Plus to a Mini 3 Pro, the difference will be ~ $200. It seems to be a small overpayment for a second camera and additional sensors.

For me, this looks like a great upgrade from my Air 2, but, like you mentioned, it's not necessarily the drone that I'm bored with - it's my local area. I've already been to every place I can think of within a 2-3 hour drive of where I live where it would be cool to get some drone footage. Getting a new drone won't change that so it's keeping me from getting a new drone in general. I also thought I'd get to bring my drone with me as I just got my passport and am planning on traveling at least once or twice a year but looking into it some more it seems most countries are very strict with their drone laws. So, once again, my dream of flying these drones in some really cool spots has been doused. Given that this possibility was my main driver behind wanting a drone in the first place, I honestly just don't think it's going to ever be worth spending the money on a new drone anymore which is sad.

My first drone was a Mini 2. It introduced me to drones and I was hooked. I upgraded to an Air 2S which I also loved. Unfortunately I lost my Air 2S to a tree on a mountainside. It was totally my fault. So even though I still have my Mini 2 and love it, I missed my Air. I finally got some extra money and I got myself an Air 3. It is so much of an upgrade to my old Air 2S I absolutely recommend it wholeheartedly. The tele camera, longer battery life, superior low light performance, and the Ocusync 4 transmission are huge upgrades. Do Air 2S owners need to get it? Such a change in philosophy from DJI. I still have the Mavic AIR 2, and the fly more combo used to be the whole deal, props, case, ND filters, power brick, and a few other extras. Additionally, that drone was a HUGE upgrade from the Mavic Air. DJI has become Apple, Air 3, then Air 3X, then Air 3 Pro, Air 3 Max Pro, etc, the same way they did with the Mavic. Also, one has to go and buy a power brick and filters. I guess I'll skip this one and wait for alphabet AIR 3 and see if they re-implement the 1" sensor which is what I was waiting for. I agree with you're point about not giving in to fomo. If you got a mini3Pro or an Air2s and you are happy with the quality and don't take it out to much, stay with those. BUT I do have to say, that selling my Mini3Pro and buying an Air3 was really worth it to me. The 70mm lens is a Gamchanger and I've used it in a majority of my shots since getting the air 3. The Wide angle is fun and still the standard for getting great drone landscapes, but the 70mm allows you to focus on specific elements, get great shots even if you're far away from something and overall just makes flying and filming so much more fun. And the point about the 1inch sensor is also not really all that valid. Yes, the 1inch sensor was bigger. BUT it also had more pixels (20 in the Air2s vs 12 on the Air3) meaning, that the individual pixels will actually be around the same size. For photos that is bad news. The 48mp image mode can only klind of make up for that, but in reality, "real" 20mp images from the Air2s will have more detail. On the Video side of things thou, this advantage fades. The 4k image from both cameras on the Air3 is really, really good - especially if you lower the sharpness and noise reduction in the settings and film in dlog-m (PLEASE give us real dlog dji......). Combine that with the increased wind stability, speed and tracking and I do think, it's a very worthy upgrade to the mini3pro and it's a ton of fun to fly - IF you plan to travel AND are willing to go through registration prozesses to comply with local regulations. But that is true for pretty much any drone now a days. In the EU its actually pretty simply (Online Test + Registration) and in other parts of the world, weight often isn't the defining factor - the camera usually is. So, if you're willing to carry the extra weight (which is significant - not only is the drone heavier, but the Batteries are too. The overall Package is around 1kg heavier than the mini3pros) and you are actually using your drone, I would say the Air3 is worth it. Even if it might be surpassed by an Air3s. DJI brings out new drones every year, so the Air3 won't be the best in it's priceclass forever, but the same will hold true for an Air3s or any other drone.

Yes it's a worthy successor to both Air 2S and particularly Mavic Air 2 - if you consider that DJI hugely increased every single spec on the aircraft, controller and transmission system. 04 nearly DOUBLES range - more importantly it is order of magnitude increased penetration. Flight time 48% increase and yes Video Image Quality is hugely increased even low light in spite of a smaller sensor. It's a stacked, dual native ISO, backlit with adjustable noise control and sharpness and mega ISO night mode as I have on Mavic 3 Pro. Its also the fastest ascend/decending drone DJI has ever made - it beats Inspire 3 and Mavic 3 Ascend/Descend speeds. Quieter, quicker, longer flying with nearly double the range, MUCH better low light performance and offers Waypoints, Cruise Control and more. I would say that qualifies as "worth upgrading" but it quite a bit more expensive when you add everything up. Fly More is $1550 and does not include ND Filters or even a charging brick! Still IQ is the true test and while Air2S camera eeks out a better photograph- video side by sides literally put any discussion of IQ and low light video to rest. Check out Quickass Tutorials and Original Dobo side by sides. Sensor tech has matured, and DJI is taking advantage of that to deliver a small, agile drone that delivers most of what Mavic 3 Pro gives me for roughly half the price. For Social Media Creator's -its a superbly targeted product.

Hi, Your review is great, it really amused me. I agree with you in many ways. Oh yes, I would like to own at least 1% stake in DJI - they have great business policies and marketing. News, news, you don't have time to follow... But however quiet the Mini3Pro is, up to 250g, it has great parameters for its size, the Air 3 is great for me for several reasons that the Mini 3 Pro doesn't give me. They are omnidirectional anti-impact sensors and the ability to shoot active track from many angles without much worry. As for the "identical" chip, you know that's not the case. Here is the layered CMOS. Although the same size, but more layers. And wait for the Air 3S? Air 4? 5? Yes, they will probably come, but life is short, and why wait? What for? I take aerial shots of weddings with my mini 2. The mini 2 is decent at it but there’s a few problems with it. 1: the mini series is great but I live in Ireland and it’s very windy and it gets blown around too much and you can’t fly quite a lot of the time. The small size and light weight just cant handle the wind. 2: most weddings have videographers and they always ask if I can keep the drone back so the microphone doesn’t pick up the drones buzzing sound. So of course I comply and use the digital zoom to get close up shots but it’s a digital zoom so it’s not great. But the air 3 has the X3 tele lens which is perfect really in my opinion for what I do. 3: the mini 2 only has 12mp photos but the air 3 has 48mp. And also I know a lot of people are unhappy with the sensor size but for me it’s still an upgrade. Those are the main reasons but there’s so many other little things for me. Like O4 and the 46 minute flight time. All the little things like this are also really really important for me so that’s why I’m going to buy an Air 3

Adding my previous comments, It is my perception that DJI is modeling themselves after Apple to be the leader in the drone industry; build highest quality drones and selling them for premium prices. They release new models every 12-18 months knowing that many people will skip a couple of generations before buying another, similar to people keeping their smartphone rather than upgrading every year. Their big bet is that customers will stay with DJI going forward because DJI makes the best drones that take the best video and pictures. It is likely DJI drones are designed to age out in about 5 years.

As a previous owner of a Mavic 3 classic, then upgraded to the now discontinued Mavic 3 (2 camera) no way will I become an early adopter of the next drone they’ll discontinue after their marketing cash grab and subsequent discontinuation of the air 3 in favor of an Air 3 “Pro Ultra Elite” model which will come out 2 months later. TLDR; never early adopt unless you are just itching to throw money away.

Many will disagree but the mini 3 pro produces superb footage. I have used the mini 3 pro for content for use in mainstream television commercials, corporate videos and documentary work. Aside from the potential issue with windy locations, the quality of footage coming out of a small mini 3 pro is 100% usable. This is why I am only using mini's for work now, cheaper and the quality is still good. Remember, 99.9% of viewers will be watching your videos on 5.5inches of smartphone and you could film with a potato and it still looks great on a smart phone. Why bother buying more expensive more elaborate drones when there really is no need for them. Without letting in on my client base, I have a few videos which are being used as global promotions for certain brands and yes, the drone footage was the mini 3 pro. :)

Well planned out video dude.. the reason why someone coming from the Mini 3 pro would like to upgrade could be any one of these reasons I reckon, the omni sensors - all round 360 sensors .. as the mini 3 pro when doing panning shots is pretty tricky to the T, the spotlight view modes, where you have the ability to position the drone at different sides of the subject. Just I am frustrated a bit why the mii 3 pro didn't have those sensors... probably coming next in the Mini 4 pro as an upgrade . .

fully appreciate your perspective and agree based on your scenarios (what you do, what you have and where you fly) your combination makes the most sense. my situation is slightly different in the US with a Part 107, so I'm selling the mini 3 pro and buying the Air 3. I do like the vertical picture and slightly higher resolution and lower weight of the M3pro, but waypoints, more stability, 2 cameras, O4 (range and image quality), omni-sensing and omni-avoidance, D log and more have me making the move. it's great to have multiple angles on the same situation so folks like me can weigh our scenarios against the feature sets and make a more informed decision. Totally agree. I've said it before: Once you get to a height where there are no obstacles, the Air 3, compared to the Mini 3 Por, is basically paying a 1.5K$ for an extra 70mm camera. Yes, I know - waypoints, APAS 5 etc, but in reality - how often do most people really use these feature? The Mini 3 Pro is still a great drone, and especially as a travel drone. It does need some enhancment to its still photography features (especially the not-as-good dynamic range). So for me - I'm waiting for the Mini 4 Pro, with the hope (and assumption) that DJI will enhance the camera system.

@@Ian.A.Anderson I agree 💯 Ian. Which is one of the main reasons for not getting the Air 3 to replace my sold OG Air 2. Another reason was RID, Air 2 wasn't compatible DJI even said it would not be. Anyways I thought about which series would be best. Ended up buying the Mini 4 Pro, so I decided the Mini series was better fitting especially with restrictions tightening in US, well everywhere. I totally agree with you. I bought the Mavic Air 2 a couple of years ago and than a couple of months after DJI released Air 2S. Then I bought their action camera Action 2 and then just a few months after they released Action 3. So now im really hesitant to buy anything because I know they will release a new one with just a slight improvement in a couple of months after. Just look at the new DJI RC that came with Mini 3 Pro, now they already releasing a new DJI RC 2 with external antennas for the Air 3!? Just like you I sold my Air 2 and just recently bought the Mini 3 Pro, because in that drone it actually seemed like you were getting something for the upgrade, and I couldn't be happier with it. Now they released a Action 4 just a year after Action 3 with a slightly larger sensor. Other than that its almost the same specs that GoPro had on its action cam 2 versions ago?! Is that really something to get hyped about? Shouldnt DJI be able to wow us a little more for a new product that we will have to buy for a premium cost? Air 3 has in some ways worse specs than Air 2S! So if it was me I would defintiely wait a couple of months for the Air 3S version instead. DJI products starting to feel more and more like the PC game Assasins Creed, just re-dress the buildings and outfits a little so you can cram out a new title each year. That said im a bit exited over the upcoming DJI Pocket 3, at least in that series there is a couple of years in between models. This drone will give you everything you could want in a 4/3 drone sensor camera including close-ups if you want them. I am wary of the tiny sensors on the truly amatuer drones. Not for me. I skipped the air series and rely on the Phantom 4 Pro + and Mav 3. The Phantom has a variable aperture and a 1 inch sensor. 😊😊

Your right if you have an Air 2s unless you really need that 3x zoom there is no point in wasting money on it, but if you don't the cheapest Air 3 option is only about £63 more than the cheapest Air 2s option, currently as sold by DJI. Unless you want to fly it in EU and the C1 certification makes a difference to you, which they did not issue for Air 2s probably on purpose even though it’s lighter. But end of the day it’s good to have 2 drones anyway for general legal restrictions and practical wind endurance reasons and also as backup especially if your work depends on it. But currently the Air 3 controller only works with it, so you will have to lug around 2 controllers too. Also, the Mavic 3 which got the retro C1 certification has gone from DJI site instead of dropping in price, so your left only with the Mavic 3 classic as far as C1 is concerned as Mavic 3 pro has no C1 which limits its use even in EU. Myself I just sold 3 older drones and got the Air 3 which I think most people do before old stuff price drops off.

It does become quite a complicated decision, where do you live etc. anyway it’s good to put both sides of the argument as most reviewers tend to be too pushy with new drones. Enjoy the drone, I’m jealous of the 70mm

@@Ian.A.AndersonI have one foot mainly UK and one in EU so had to do their tests also as no unification due to Brexit I guess, but you only have to register in one EU country to be covered in rest. I use Mini 3 pro mostly but when it blows you need larger drone and a C1 in EU is less hassle. I'm hoping that their next drones will have variable optical zoom on one decent camera not in steps via additional cams. And that RC 2 is more likely to work with next models, they are also selling it on its own so maybe. They are indeed inscrutable.

So I don’t have either one currently. I’m debating between the Air 3 or the Mini 3 Pro. Thoughts?

It really depends where you live, and the type of content you film. Mountaineering the Air 3. If you live in a country with more lenient sub 250g rules relative to heavier drones- the Mini 3 pro

When i saw other reviews, and comparisons, no no no, video quality of air 3 is just not acceptable, i would rather add $200 and buy 3 classic with much better video/photo quality, air 3 simple doesnt deserves to be successor of air 2s. Look carefully others reviews, and you see how cheap looking, over sharpened video quality is.

The rear stacked sensor that is the SAME size is FAR better than the Mini 3 Pro. Opens up far more business opportunities. As far as comparing it to the Air 2S, there is none. Hop on O4, because it's out with O3/+ .
