Very interesting video. I have the 670, 700, 740 & 791. The 670 by far is my favorite, light as a feather and not nearly as "whippy" as the other 3. The 700 is the most limber making it great for ultralight moving baits like small spinners or cranks. I've turned the 740 into my bank fishing bobber & worm rod the the 791 is a beast at launching heavier bottom rigs for trout. The 670 however paired with a 2000 Vanford using a 1/16oz jig head and a 3" gulp minnow is the most fun combo I have. From crappie & bluegill to 2lb bass, it's fantastic!
@Anderson88 Another YT'er said that the 791 has the feel of a fly rod, and that it feels like you have a whale on when you catch a fish, has this been your experience as well?
Thanks for the review! I have four Sierra's for bass fishing and I love them! Of course this rod is different. The bass rods have a more moderate tip. Dobyns rods are very well balanced. That's why I love them
I got one of the prototype Dobyns Kaden 700sf with the same ratings as this only it says extra light fast. I felt right away it was more of a light fast or extra fast. It feels like it has more back bone and faster than my st. Croix triump 6'6" light fast rod. That being said I love the rod for drop shot, and 1/8th oz jig with 3 inch easy shiner.
I Have been watching a number of UK channels as well and have started to use Kuying Ultra-lite and Light action spinning rods in various lengths. I have an Abu Eliminator, Major Craft Fax 632sul, and a Daiwa Presso V. The Kuying and Kuying Teton rods, about a $100+, really fill the Gap to the $300+ JDM brands many of which are made in China also .The Super Aging Kuying is a great rod for anything from Crappie to Pike
Thanks Mike for sending your rod for review! I bank fish a lot so longer rods help sometimes. Thanks Victor for another great review! When does your crappie end? Have a great and safe weekend!
If you ever get the opportunity to try the TFO trout/panfish I know you will like it. It’s a true fast recovery, but the blank bends pretty deep under load too. I have the 7’ 2-6lb it’s great. It’s similar to the basspro air stream, but lighter and more sensitive.
i 've been recommended that rod many times, but its so old, i don't want to buy it now. Also i think the blank will have too much glass/resin by today's standards and will feel a little dead. But if i can get it from a subscriber, i would review it
@@ifishcatfish I have the 6'. TFO should have labeled it as just a trout rod. It is too hard for panfish. The slower taper and sharpness make it rival many high-end JDM Native Trout rods. If you are looking for a rod for plugs, spinners, spoons with higher resistance I think the price for the performance is unbeatable.
I have a video called Uktralight Rod Buying guide. My recommendations at every price point. U can check that because it also depends on foshing technique
actually this is a Legalis LT, with the spool of Revros LT. I talk about that reel in my Reel Buiying Guides. I hate that reel. Spend a few extra bucks and buy the Legalis, or buy the Regal LT.
I know this video is a year old now...but I was wondering how you feel about the Daiwa Kage? (if you've had your hands on it). I saw a head to head and although the blank seemed similar, the handle looked more comfortable to me. Extraneous Details- I fish a lot of spring creeks for rock bass and smallmouth. I've had a hard time finding a good rod for precision casting and bottom bouncing 1/32oz jigs. It's a difficult balance. You want it to be fun to bring in rock bass, and have the sensitivity to detect light bites, but when a 3lb smallmouth hits you need backbone so you can turn them a bit and drive that little hook in. I landed a 15" rock bass on a 5'6" TFO panfish series....but I couldn't get him up the bank and when I tried to climb down I fell and dislocated my shoulder. Ever since then I've been trying to find a beefier ultralight 😅
@@ifishcatfish good to know, thank you! I'm an everything angler but my favorite is definitely smallmouth on light tackle. I caught 23 little smallmouth today on a jig but still lost a lot of fish because my "extra fast" action St Croix panfish series rod is actually moderate action. Had trouble getting solid hooksets. Definitely going to invest in that daiwa rod. I have plenty of "real" ultralights already.
Tried several times to order this rod from Amazon twice. Both times they came broken. Went with a local dealer and bough a Phenix elixir 7’6” and a Phenix dragonfly 8’ dmx and paired with a vanford 1000 on both.
I just bought that rod for mini jigging and it’s alright but I do think it is kind of thick for mini jigging for trout. It’s a great rod and I caught some big trout. But the handle is kind of big, the rod is kind of stiff or thick, and the hook holder is in a spot I’m not used to but I’m going to look for another rod for mini jigging. Great video though 👍 your review is honest and well detailed 👌
I was about to get this rod for a mini jigging. I’m glad I came across this review in your comment. I am using a TFO ultralight rod currently. However I am in the market for an ultralight JDM rod with a thinner blank. Maybe zodiac. What do you recommend?
@@mattnguyen1672 I’ve never used TFO but I would suggest buying the Okuma Guide Select Pro 7’6” UL rod. I bought it 6 months ago and it works like a charm 👌 it’s got the back bone to handle big trout, it’s moderate-fast action so you feel those tiny bites and it casts mini jigs far. And plus it’s cheaper than the Phenix rods which I know they are great but I rather buy a rod for $90 dollars less that can perform almost or if not better than a $220 Elixir or Mirage. I’m thinking about getting another one too that’s just how great that rod is. Hope this helps 😁
Ah I see i use to jig fish too, it was because I was getting into fishing so I listen to those bait guys and said, oh you need a nice ultralight and 2lb line, but it’s a load of money 💰 had I known In the beginning and not be so gullible I could’ve found out that these fish are dumb to bite anything. They certainly will people say there finicky but I wait till they leave sight fishing and I throw out a glob of 3 dollar trout play dough and catch it. I was tired of buying something expensive just to store it away for months later. I rather stick to one species like catfish and when trout season comes around pull out cheap $25 trout gear, each there own though
i tried to make my own float, something simple. Got scammed. If i make it in USA it will be too expensive, if i make it in china, there is too many scammers
The new Shimano Cardiff C14 ultralight 1000 is described by Shimano as having a “fine tuned” drag that is “LOUDER” than the previous model! But it’s $295.00!! I know u got big money $…please review this reel w your microphone placed next to this “LOUDER” drag from Shimano, thanks!
this one is more sensitive than the usual stuff you will find in Cabellas, but i can tell it was assembled by a bass angler.. They never contact me when they make these important decisions : )
@@dexterrobinson4065 Croix are good but Hearty Rise is better and so are the tanyu lunakia and Yamaga Blue Current TZ. Try those out.. if you love croix, you will love those more! ;)
I have the dobyns Sierra trout rod. It has good sensitivity and backbone for the price. I quickly realized it was a bass rod with a solid tip section. I do love how light it is and the sensitivity is fine. The reason I got one is the county parks where I live started planting huge trout up to 13 lbs.! I landed probably four 4-6lbs trout with this rod. The most impressive part to me was how easily I could turn head of a big trout and reel it in. My other rods could not handle a big fish as easily. I did break the tip on a hook set (braid wrapped around the tip) and now they are sending me a regular ultralight bass rod. I can't wait to try it out and hopefully hook up on a double digit trout this season !!! I think the best part of this rod is the customer service. I spoke with two guys there and they were super helpful and definitely customer service oriented. Maybe they are just that way down in Texas. Anyways great rod and I will definitely buy more from Dobyn's just based on customer service.
Never make a video on a rod review again lol. You are so very wrong in almost every aspect of this rod it’s actually quite embarrassing. First you say that the blank is carbon which it’s not it’s actually a high modulus graphite and the only carbon found on the rod is in the solid tip which is only around 5% of the rod. And then you go over how the handle is completely wrong which I find it to be very comfortable in fact I prefer it to a bunch of my high end st.croix rods. You also said how the rod blank is “too thick” which it’s definitely not for how ridiculously long your rod is at 7’4” for example that would be the equivalent of using a 8ft medium power bass spinning rod, all I’m saying is it’s insanely long for an ultra-light rod. Normal people buy 6-6.5 ft ultra-lights. Yet another thing you said is wrong about the rod is when you mentioned that the blank is too stiff and is quote “extra-fast” which is also wrong btw in your thumbnail you can clearly see it’s a true fast and nowhere near an extra-fast. This rod is pretty much just a really light jig and worm rod intended for bass but it has an ultralight power so it’s good for a variety of panfish which means you can’t really fish baits with treble hooks but it makes it really good for jigs and plastics.
Dude, did u take some drugs before writing this? the things i say can be observed with your eyes, its not a matter of opinion. What is graphite? Do u even know? The rod was thick as a half inch PVC pipe - how is that not thick to you?? I don't have the rod, but measure the diameter of the blank and tell me what it is! It looks like a fat, ugly PVC pipe! I have plenty of long rods to compare again, both cheap and expensive. Try the 7'6 Soare XR, or the 7'6 Daiwa Presso! Their crossection is half of what this rod is! Then once you admit its a solid tip rod - that automatically makes it an extra fast action rod! All solid tip rods are extra fast action, because the solid tip is MUCH softer than the half inch PVC pipe! On the little bluegills its only the tip that bends! Same with handle! This rod is an embarassment even for $70! The only good thing about it its kind of light! But its ugly , uncomfortable, and has horrible action
@@ifishcatfish wow you are delusional. You literally said that the diameter of the rod blank was 1cm how is that half inch learn your units of measurement before writing a comment. Or maybe you are just on drugs? In your comment you also said that you think the rod is ugly which is funny because in the video you said how much you like the looks of it and even called it sexy lol, didn’t know someone could be sexually attracted to a fishing rod. I honestly can’t comprehend why you think this rod is so bad. It’s an absolute gem for small jigs and plastics.
@@aidenroy4298 dude your comment is right here, i haven't deleted anything yet, but if u posted something youtube doesn't like, youtube will remove it and I cann't reverse that! You are obviously just saying things because you are offended that your rod sucks. U attack me for saying carbon isntead of graphite, but graphite is carbon. U say the rod is not fat, but it is 14-15mm fat in the base, that is a fact that is not for debate. I gave u example with REAL ultralight rods of same length that are half the thickness of this blank. You don't reply to any of the points i make, because they are undisputable, but you start to spit other stuff now. This is a BASS rod blank, made by a BASS rod company, who just glued a solid tip on top of the bass blank and called it a day. This is not how ultralight fishing works.
