I think you also need to rely on the actors for the Doctor to showcase and convey that this is someone theyve seen before. Obviously 11 and River had the most episodes, but I like how 12 made u feel all those old episodes again and the history. Tennant was also rlly impressive. Right when he heard his name, he knew this was someone he could trust

This is why I love going back and rewatching Silence in the Library, especially after watching The Husbands of River Song. Gives the entire episode new meaning, because now you know exactly who she is, and what she means to the Doctor. I also like the bit of reverse foreshadowing she gives Rory at one point. "I know one of these days I'm going to look into his face, and he isn't going to recognize me, and I think it'll kill me."

When Ten says "Who are you?" to River the first time you watch it, you're not even confused, just blank. When you hear it after learning all about who she is, it breaks your heart.

Yes, but she has a point, he can't handle fragility without mothering it. River points out the biggest issue with the power dynamic between the Doctor and the companions they are fragile creators which is why he always (yes, yes, besides Rose) keeps them at a distance and never treats them as full equals (Donna, the woman has a right to chose her life path).

But of course, the Doctor being the Doctor, couldn't let her die and essentially made her become a data ghost in an artificial reality with other dead people. Another thing I love about The Husbands of River Song is that it's the first and only time where River and the Doctor are truly equal. River was a Mary Sue throughout most of her time on the show, constantly presented as being superior to her husband in every capacity, including regeneration ("I'm focussing on a dress size") despite not being a Time Lady. It was nice to see her being the one who was clueless for once and both she and the Doctor got to know each other better than ever before. I hope those 24 years on Darrillium were well spent.

Maybe they should do an episode about their 24 years on Darrillium. Kind of like Trenzalore where Matt Smith never left the planet until his regeneration. They can't have the 13th Doctor (by which I mean Capaldi because John Hurt is the true 9th Doctor) do any episode with River outside of Darrillium but 24 years is a long time and, knowing this married couple, they'd go looking for trouble whenever they were bored.

She physically had no memory of him because of the way it worked

Emerald what? She’d never seen the 12th Doctor before yes but she had all her memories of all the other Doctors. The man repeatedly asked her if she knew who he was, made it clear that he was ‘The Doctor’, knew what specific buttons did in the TARDIS, even said to her ‘stop pretending you don’t know who I am....it’s me!’ There were so many clues that should have gave him away and river should have picked up on straight away.

She was in denial.

There's a line where she does ask about how it was even possible he got a new body because he got through all of his regenerations. At that point, since she has seen every regeneration and hasn't known about how he got a lot more to use she wasn't aware it was even possible that any one else could be the doctor. That's more likely to be as to why she didn't see that the 12th doctor was the doctor, since she thought it wasn't possibly and ruled out even considering it.

She didn't consider it because timelords only have 12 bodies and he's the 13th.

My life is sadder knowing that Jenny and Vastra aren't around anymore, and there wont be a "my wife no mine" moment. Because you know Vastra and River would flirt endlessly.

Lol well river did say to 12 you remind me alot of my wife...I know it's a joke but it is cannon and I like to think she's referring to 13 and they had many adventures before she met 12 n 13 had to play along and keep her 12th face secret so the events in the episode were unaltered
