The first pedal I ever had was a DOD Ice Box Chorus. I recently got one again, which is very nostalgic and fun. But how good could some discontinued chorus pedal from the '90s really be?
The answer is... very good?
Here I talk a bit about the DOD FX64 Ice Box, and compare it to the current reigning champion of chorus, the Boss Waza Craft CE-2w.
My guitar is a Fender JA-90 Jim Adkins Telecaster, and the amp used here is the Strymon Iridium set to the Chime model. I've gotten very lax about explaining the rest of my signal chain in these things, sorry. I basically always have the Diamond Comp Jr compressor and the Timmy overdrive active as well, so those are probably on in this video.
Enjoy the vintage modulation pedal goodness!
-------------------------------------------
Unless I state otherwise in the video, everything I test out on here is stuff that I bought myself. There are no paid reviews on this channel and only a couple times have I ever had items sent to me for review. All opinions are my own!

Unfortunately you can't get the DOD Ice Box new anymore, but:

I have this same pedal on my board. Bought it new in the 90s and I’m still using it!

Yeah I wish I'd kept mine all this time, but I'm glad to have one again even if it's not the exact same unit!

FX 64 ICEBOX is still the Best there is! I've literally tried DOZENS of Chorus pedals and I'm still Yet to find Anything that beats out the DOD ICEBOX

Try the JHS Emperor. It is exceptional with respect to this pedal.

the fx65 is one of Andy Martin's favorite pedals. He's featured it on his pedal show a number of times. The other DOD choruses get a shout out too.

Interesting. Very comparable in terms of quality and character and it comes down to personal taste, really. Do you find analog modulations generally melting a little better with the original sound than digital ones? You had that SA multimod pedal that sounds great anyway, and I am far away from being an analog snob (using digital modulations myself cause I use them just a touch) but I think there is something there in the final sound that I prefer with analog modulations...what are your thoughts?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 2 года назад
Yeah, I was honestly pretty happy with the SA one, but you might be right about the analog sitting just where you need it to. I also like the simplicity of 2-4 knobs and not a ton of deep options, hah.

I recall DOD. I am probably about 15 years older than you. I feel they are good pedals but people back in the 80s and 90s said they were pure junk. I have the Boss Chorus pedals from the early 80s. CE-2 and CE-3 which are very good.

Yeah I have a fondness for the DODs, and I think at least some of them are starting to get their due. I’m a little more skeptical of how the drive pedals like the Grunge may have aged… though I’d still be into playing around one again. I’ve liked basically every Boss chorus I’ve heard, even the digital ones, though of course the CE-2 and CE-3 are classics.

Hi , do you know maybe what the differences between your pedal and the fx64 usa version with the 'chill, cold, deep, defrost' and the snow circles on it? Yours is an older version? i want to buy one of them but have to be sure before i buy.. thank you man!
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio Год назад
I’ve actually never seen that one until now - it looks very similar to my current one, except for the snowflake graphics and two different knob names. I’ve owned this one and the plainer looking one where the knobs actually said ‘rate, depth’ etc and both were good, but I can’t speak to the ‘chill / defrost’ variation 🤔

@@LeFeversAudio ok thank you man! i ordered the one like you have here in the video. i have tried so many analog chorus pedals and hope for this pedal to be my last! 😀

I hope it works out! I went through about eight different choruses before I landed back here (on the very first one I ever had, hah).

What's the tone difference between the ice box with the FX64 logo on the left side than the one with the logo on the right? I came across on FB market place the one with the logo on the left and debating on if I should get it.
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio Год назад
I’m not sure - I know they redesigned the look of it a couple times, or changed what the knobs are labeled, but as far as I know the sound is the same…

Is the thumb tag picture different than the pedal, You are demoing? was one made in the US
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio Год назад
Yeah it’s hard to find images of this pedal so I used the picture I was able to find to make the thumbnail. But as far as I know (?) they were both US made, just different logo designs and knob names.

@@LeFeversAudio Saw somewhere the other is Chinese made 🤷🏻‍♂️
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio Год назад
Yeah I’m having trouble confirming either way. The site www.americaspedal.info is the best DOD resource on the web but it’s a little unclear whether any of the FX64s moved to China or if they were the last US made line before the switch.

@@LeFeversAudio I just picked one up, apparently they came out in 2000 with a serial number starting with V, made is China stamped on the rubber. Your is from 1996 Lamb series. Question: I had to turn the Level up 100% to hear the effect. Is yours similar, a more shuttle level knob?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio Год назад
Interesting… no, I don’t think mine is like that. If I’m correct about which one is the Level knob (the names on mine are useless but I think it’s the first one) then I keep it between 50% and 75%.
