Lol, Yasir Qadhi was literally the only guy made sense. The rest of the three just kept jumping around from topic to topic, it was ridiculous. Agree or disagree with him (and I don't always agree with him), he was clearly the sharpest guy there.

Every time Asra was answering a difficult question, she turned to the audience, not the panelists, and started the same emotional guilt filled response, such as “I'm a mother…” “I don't want you to go through this…” just for an example. After all it seems that mothers always know best.

It’s sad to hear that allegedly poetess say: take the Easy Way Out, which she translated into the “happy way out.” Which of course means doing what everyone else says and pleasing an irrational religion’s expectations. And it then goes on as irrational as to advise young girls not to even marry a Muslim from other country. It all comes down to stay close to your mom so she can control your marriage.

Yasir Qadhi by far the sharpest one there, he did simply what any other Islamic scholar would say, and that is stating the official ruling. To argue that 1400 years of Islamic scholarly tradition interpreted the verse wrong takes a lot of arrogance; if you don't like the ruling, feel free to leave the faith, but don't try changing what has been established for 1000+ years.

Never allow anyone or anything to control you.

can someone say I am a communist but would like to have the right to have private property because it is my human rights to do so.... or can someone say I am vegetarian but love to eat meat its my human rights

What a great platform those debates are! It gets people to see, to distinguish, and to decide. The Qatar foundation deserves a medal for them.

This debate is just Yasir Qadhi surrounded by a bunch of dimwits. Time was too short for debating a vast topic like this. The only guy who sounded rational and logical was Yasir Qadhi.

The moment you overthink all of this stuff: culture, religion, family, position in society etc. just to varify your decision to marry that person, whoever it might be, is the moment where you should realise that such a relationship will go nowhere but south.

What is prohibited, it is prohibited... if you are a Muslim you do not follow your desires and mind, you follow the rules and laws set by the One Who Made you i.e. God/Allah. Simple as that.

You are missing the point of what she said. She said society would feel that way.

i find the fact that this show was cancelled very suspicious. can anyone tell me why they think or know the show was cancelled? i cant find an answer anywhere...

All of you forgot to mention that the penalty for apostasy is Death. You forgot to mention "honour killing" within the muslim world even between mariages of the same religion ! you forgot to mention many heavy deadly issues.

Incredible that this is even an issue to debate. Isn't it the most normal thing on earth that every human being should choose their own partner freely? Everyone has the right to be happy and to be with a person they love and trust.

@lilartist10 I want to know the reason why you think she didn't say "I was told 'God forbid'". As for dress code, how you dress may be a part of religion, but it's not up to you to judge who is and who is not a muslim.

I felt really bad when people completely misunderstood Dr. yasir qadhi ... He was just saying, Islam doesn't diminish Women's right ... And still there are oppression against women in the name of Islam ... that's the problem of the society, not Islam ... and while looking at some of the questions asked by some people, i felt they have no brain to understand this simple point he was trying to make ...

muslim marraiges happens normally with the close relatives sp all points of mushrik/muafique asra is wrong....if a women is muslim and having fear of allah cant go against parents and allah rule...this is not debatable matter

People confuse their cultures with Islam. The fact that some Arabs behave in some ways do not necessarily mean that it is the teachings of Islam. The Quran and Sunnah should be the reference point.

I love Asra Nomani, but she´s got a very penetrating look in her eyes. Sometimes I find it funny, sometimes, deep, sometimes, scary. But I really admire her courage.

Muslim/Arab men are so jealous of Muslim/Arab women, even if these women are not their wives, mother, sister, aunt, or cousin. Yet these Muslim/Arab men salivate over non-Muslim/Arab women.

Only education can beat religion.. Educate people.. Im going to marry whoever i love no matter the religion. This is not freedom, is slavery. I feel sorry for the girl from Golf. So young but so blind minded. And of course for the woman (blue scarf) that stands for her..

How stupid the arguments are! Yes a woman is FREE to choose. Just like she is free to be a Muslim or not. [La-Iqra-ha-fid-deen]. You cannot force a religion on anyone. When a woman chooses (legally) forbidden boundaries for marriage, it simply means she is NOT YET A MUSLIM, TRULY SPEAKING. Just being born a Muslim and having Arabic names do not put her/him into the list of believers. So once again YES SHE IS FREE TO CHOOSE. So the issue is he/she should choose Islam by knowledge and conviction and then automatically she will make the right choice. [Parents, society get shocked when daughters/sons choose one outside (legal) religion, but it should be an eye opener, that he/she was never a Muslim, that which would save them when the eyes will be overturned !!!!]

Also you have to take the whole surah. Meaning look at nisa. Its literal word for word laws. The surah itself isnt metaphorical in that aspect so why would someone say that that the iyads are? Take the whole religion or none of it

As a Pantheist I found the debate a worthwhile contribution to my views on Islam, by the way the Koran does not prohibit drinking alcohol, only alcohol of the grape.

You are in no position to consider or not consider people muslim, it's her own choice and no one else should make it any of their business how she is dressed. If she says "I am muslim" then who are you to say she's not?

i think the speakers, including the chair is all great speakers but i do agree that the topic is too broad. There are 3 issues that should be discussed individually: 1. whether muslim women should be allowed to choose her own husband who is muslim.This is actually clear in Islam, they are allowed, but of course in some cultures, especially in cultures that are more traditional and close knit compared to the western cultures, it is not an easy thing. but this is the more to do with culture not Islam. 2. Whether muslim women should have the freedom to marry non muslim men 3. Whether muslim women should have the freedom to marry other women. there is no debate for no 1 because ultimately Islam allows women to have a say in whoever they marry. The debate would be more interesting and fruitful if they debated about issue 2 & 3 in depth but they keep coming back to issue no.1.

@desiboyh You've got a point, and that point is precisely that at one point the Islamic nations were quite culturally and intellectually advanced relative to the rest of the world. Whereas now... you do what you want about that.

The rulings in the Quranic texts that curtails the freedom of women to marry is one of the many reasons many are leaving the religion..

A beautiful verse describes how we should be acting, "Allaah will not change the condition of a people, until they change their conditions themselves" [13:11]. Meaning, until we change our condition (i.e. being constant sinners, disobedience to Allaah, not gaining correct knowledge to benefit ourselves) to a state of being obedient to Allaah, following the Prophet in absolutely everything he came with etc. then Allaah will not change our condition for us. We have to look to ourselves first!

@cherylwens It's not. I meant for one who do have religion. It's a must for those to intergrate logic, science, with it. Science is real. It's kind of like saying since the Quran/Bible/Torah/ etc. does not mention cars we cannot drive them. That would be irrational logic.

The problem is exercising these choices forces woman and men being kicked out of their society because of the choice they make.Choices is a double edged sword.

Asra is not a sheep like most of the muslims and can think for herself.. Religion divides humanity.

Choices are great, make them and take responsibility for the results of your decision whether good or bad. I don’t agree with those who want the freedom to do as they like & also decide what others can and can’t do. You want to tell people to get lost until you want something from them I will tell you there’s the door.

Consensus in the interpretation of Islam and all its contradictory mandates is just nonexistent. Why do these people insist on the righteousness of a set of rules that contradict themselves?
