The Dominican Republic Is Building a Wall to Keep Migrant Kids Out 

The world must STOP waiting for the Dominican Republic to solve Haiti's problems. We have problems that we also have to solve, but we don't expect anyone to save us. We survived the Spanish, the Haitians who ruled our country for 22 years, an American invasion, a dictator and now we are fighting corruption. Every sovereign nation has its laws and EVERYONE must abide by them.

Vice, I thought you were better! I am from a border town in the Dominican Republic. I went to school with illegal Haitians who received the same education I did. I received care at our local hospital along with Haitians who didn’t have to pay just like I didn’t have to pay. Wall or no wall, the Dominican Republic has done more for Haiti than even France who took their resources. Wall or no wall the Dominican Republic will continue to do for Haitians what their own government doesn’t do for them. The world needs to STOP expecting the Dominican Republic to solve Haiti’s issues. We have issues that we need to resolve too, but we are not expecting anyone to save us. As a Dominican who lives in DR I can tell you that just DR is caring about Haiti, USA and international community has closed his eyes on Haiti reality, we do what we can to help Haiti, but remember about 20% of our population also live in poverty, we can't make Haiti situation our priority, this must be faced by the whole international community and not just DR.

The Dominican Republic has the right to protect its borders from illegal immigration just like any other country.

He asked no smart questions, exposed his sources, and people call this good reporting. Jeez.

Although I do believe this was alright coverage of the situation , I felt the portrayal of the DR was rather unfair . Dominicans themselves are struggling with poverty and mass corruption , why was the situation in the Dominican Republic summarized as only “It is easier to make ends meet”? Although it might be easier to make ends meet in the DR , it is certainly not easy. This gives a perspective that Dominicans are simply unwilling to help and greedy, when the reality is much more complex than that. The Haitian state is failing it’s people. And let’s not forget the debt that France placed on Haiti simply to further oppress them. I pray for my Haitian brothers and sisters 🙏🏽🙏🏽

I went on vacation to Dominican Republic and saw with my own 2 eyes how the D.R. helps and treats their Haitians brothers and sisters even as some take over piece of lands to build homes in the open and undeveloped space they give them jobs and some even have businesses and yes D.R. will always help their brothers and sisters in need.

A wall is necessary to continue the development of DR’s economy. The wealth disparity is immense and taking in all Haitians will only further that. Let’s not forget of the almost million Haitians that have established themselves in the DR, they account for almost 10% of the population. The DR has poverty and infrastructure issues of its own!

No country is obliged to take load from another, we have about 10% of our population that came from Haiti in the last two decades, our Hospitals are mostly to give Haitians assistance because Dominicans use private services, social assistance is given to them too. But we have our own struggles as well and we are the country that helps the most. Each country must face its own problems. Why don't you talk about the College we built for them? And all the economical aid? The time the attacked trucks with aid and killed drivers, is that not important?

How does anybody expect us to take care of the haitian brothers when not even their government has any form of control or respect over its citizens? International reporting has made this situation worse while not helping with the facts at all. This situation will eventually escalate into a war against the same people who live across the island. There are a lot of problems already plaguing the DR, and illegal Haitian immigration is one of them. It honestly sucks that no Haitians can immigrate legally. If they could, I don't think it would be such a big issue.

People have to understand that even though both nations are on extremely different economic and social situations, the Dominican Republic is still a poor nation. Our new government is finding it hard to get our country through the caos brought by the pandemic, we can’t be taking care of Haiti as well. The whole point of the wall is not solely keeping Haitians out. It’s about controlling what comes in through the border. It will come with cameras and more technology in order to make sure that everything is tracked. This will not only benefit the DR but also Haiti since it is being worked on with their government so that they can also keep track of what’s being taken across to Haiti. This is what our Minister of the Presidency stated in a recent interview. We’ve been having issues with weapons being smuggled across the border, as well as deforestation for Haitian coal black markets, among a few other issues.
