Dave Shogren, was the original bass player for the Doobies. He died in 1999 at the age of 49. He was on the first two albums. He was my cousin, but I only met him once when I was 11 or 12. Rest in peace Dave 🙏❤️
I’m very sorry about your cousin and I’m glad that at least you met him once. My family is so spread out, I have lots of relatives who I’ve very rarely seen. Even as a big Doobie Brothers fan, I’ve found very little information about Dave. I’ve always felt sad that he left so early in their career and right before they made it big. I did read that he ran a recording studio, which I hope was financially successful and personally fulfilling to him. I’m also a Swedish-American and suspect that his last name originated from Sjögren, which means “lake branch.” Keith Knudsen is also of Scandinavian descent.
@@leczorn Thank you for your kind text! A funny story about "Shogren". Our grandfather Ole, when he came over from the old country, changed his name from Hoganson (sen?) to Shogren, because he thought there'd be a lot of Hogansons in the US. One grandparent was from Sweden and one was from Finland (?) or one of the Scandinavian countries, I don't remember which. My mother (Avis) was the 11th of 12 children, David's father, Paul was the 12th of 12. I believe the grandfather died in the late 1930s and the grandmother died in the 1950s. I was born in 1955 and never saw either. I think you know more about David than I do. I did hear his studio was successful and he had it for a while. I saw him in concert once at age 15, I believe in 1970, when they did a 99¢ tour with Mother Earth for Warner Brothers in Seattle. I didn't get to meet him then. Probably for the best, I was an out of control teen in those days! If you live in the area and know of a drummer named Mitch Montrose, that is a (Doobie 🤣🤣) cousin and I believe he knew David well. Thank you very much for your kind words and thoughts! You taught me more about David. One of my regrets in life was I never got to meet him as an adult! Peace and Blessings, Phil! 🙏❤️
List of Doobies obituaries: Bobby LaKind -- drums, percussion, vocals (1945-1992) Dave Shogren -- bass guitar (1950-1999) Cornelius Bumpus -- saxophone, flute, keyboards, vocals (1945-2004) Keith Knudsen -- drums (1948-2005) Mike Hossack -- drums (1946-2012) John Hartman -- drums (1950-2021) Chet McCracken -- drums (1946-2022)
Cornelius Bumpus and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter are the only two musicians to ever play for both the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. I'd pick Jeff as my favorite Doobie and "Long Train Running" for their best song.
Doobie Doobie Doo!!! 😂 Seen them several times back in the 80's. Great live! Actually liked Michael McDonald as a solo artist too!! 😊 What's so sad is they were all so young! May those who passed continue to have eternal rest and peace. 🕊️🙏❤️
Skip Spence was a San Jose denizen after Moby Grape and more or less put the original band together and gets a thank you on the sleeve of the Doobies first album.Tiran Porter and Corny Bumpus would play with Moby Grape from the late 70s to the 90s.
Have to admit having a man crush on Pat Simmons...Met a number of times, very genuine, quiet, great quiet sense of humor and an all around good person...probably pretty much known for that. I also loved the laid back, talent, voice and vibe of bassist Tiran Porter. VERY VERY underrated.
@@FactsVerse l grow up in the seventies went music was great the doobie brothers was a part of my music the minute by minute album was my favorite album today I still played it michael McDonald voice was distinctive that what made the doobie brothers
This was when bands had about fifty people on stage with them and you no one there was there as eye candy talent only. I loved the Doobie Brothers episode on What's Happening. Forgot how huge tape recorders we're🤣😂.
skylark the bass player was amazing ,he brought so many notes to the music. and band ,my opinion.he was the best bass player ,sadly he had a stroke, never hear of him anymore on how hes doing ,or improvement's ?
My favorite is Pat. When he was clean shaven didn't he look like Andy Travis of WKRP in Cincinnati? I don't know why I always pictured Tiran Porter singing lead. Yep. I was clueless. But Tom Johnston rules. Michael McDonald was good except for the last time I saw them. They were GREAT! I was hard to even understand what Michael was singing. Just sounded like a lot of moaning.
Well, considering he’s in his 80’s these days….. Could it be possible that when the news came out back then about his death it could have been like a hoax?
Pat Simmons. We just saw them in Franklin, TN. He is such a happy, relaxed, grateful performer. Seems like such a genuine and personable guy. For me, he was the star of the show. I never got to see them when I was younger. So I’m glad for this opportunity.
Michael McDonald was my favorite Doobie Brother. Love the story how he was plucked out of obscurity in playing at bars in Glendale to replace an ailing Doobie Brother. The rest is history.
Firstly, from Cairns Australia, I did appreciate your video. A dedicated Doobee, 😁❤️, I thank you for paying tribute to these amazing people. I loved them all. They made all of those songs ‘feel’ great, bc of the musical soul power they put into each one, AND. You can tell when it’s there in a band and when it’s not there. Pat is my favourite band member. Everyone is great but to me, Pat, has such an open loving and caring heart and is pretty happy with life. He genuinely cares about many things that matter to me as well. He’s a great songwriter and singer and player ‘master’ . We have been fortunate to have seen the band perform a few times now and Pat is so lovely on stage with the audience. So free and easy. My biggest thrill was singing along to Black Water while on vacation in NY state with our American friends driving down the highway, on a sunny morning in their station wagon. It was magic !!😎 thanks Pat. Love the Doobie Brothers! Still.

Also, two other Doobie Brothers have died: Chet McCracken September 20, 1946 - February 11, 2022 (aged 75) Dave Shogren October 12, 1950 - December 14, 1999 (age 49)

I can remember when Patrick Simmons lived in northern California just down the road from my cousin. He was in the bank 1 day and a lady came up To him and said you look just like Patrick Simmons from the Dewey brothers. His wife said oh everyone tells him that I don't see the reason once at all. It was funny.
When l was 13 years old, the first album l purchased was "Taking to the Streets".That was my first introduction to this magnificent band,I have been a dedicated fan ever since.😍❤❤🎶
Well we love them all but I guess Patrick and John. They both seem to enjoy so much what they are doing. We just saw them again in Durant Oklahoma. They were great!❤
The RAW talent and duel drummers sold me from the beginning. What astounds me is why they weren’t inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier? Pat Simmons gets my vote for MVP ❤
They were my Number one Band Growing up & still are Strange as it may sound The songs I relished the most became the Story Book of My Life Music and Lyrics imitating life ..................
Same here. I bailed in 1975 I saw them 6 times 3 prior without MM 3 after with MM only because my cheating girlfriend wanted to see them. He ruined their sound, in my opinion
