First time I've heard this song in decades, so thanks guys. This was one of my oft-played 8 track tapes from the 70s. The Doobies just have such a joyful vibe, don't they. One of the best ever.

Can we all agree that the Doobie Brothers are one of the most iconic 70’s bands? Tom Johnston wrote so many fantastic songs and his soulful voice and guitar style took them across the finish line. Throw in Pat Simmons’ writing, vocals and guitar work and this album is the result.

This is why MOST Doobie fans that were fans from day one say the band before McDonald joined was a better band. Not saying that they were better musicians but the sound and direction of the old Doobies with Tom Johnston were the best. You haven't even touched the surface of this version of the Doobies!!! Enjoy the ride and I believe you guys are now understanding that the 70's was the best decade of music in history.

My late brother Ray, aka "Wizard" and I spent hours upon hours with this album, our guitars and our Radio Shack turntable trying to figure out how to play these songs. That RS turntable ran so slow that we ended up "learning" them at least one full step lower than the actual key in which they were written. We learned this when we were at university and got ourselves a good quality turntable for the first time. Unfortunately Ray is gone now, but your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times brings me back to happier days of yesteryear.💯👍 Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I looked up the credits: Nick DeCaro - string arrangements on "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman", "South City Midnight Lady" and "Evil Woman." This song has always reminded me of B.B. King's classic minor key blues 'The Thrill Is Gone.' Nice strings on that one as well.
@ToddSauve
@ToddSauve 4 месяца назад
Oh yes, this is straightforward blues-rock with a heavy emphasis on the blues. People will be playing this song for a thousand years because it is simply timeless. Some of the tastiest and choicest blues guitar you will ever hear. The Doobies heard BB King's "The Thrill is Gone" and then sat down and wrote this one. It is actually kind of hard to get much info on this song because the Doobies seldom ever talk about it and have a difficult time recapturing this for concerts. Tom Johnston, for some reason, either does not or can not sing the lyrics like he did back then. If they put their minds to it they could easily play the guitar parts to perfection but the lyrical delivery just constantly escapes them. Or they don't think it is is important. But to those of us who love "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman" we are still dying to hear a truly excellent and definitive live concert take of this that equals the album cut. 🎸🎸🎸💖💖💖😎😎😎👌

In 1973 I was completely infatuated by YES & Zeppelin but when this album came out, I thought it was just wonderful. The entire damn album. No, it wasn't as heavy as I was normally attracted to, but these guys were just in some kind of groove. All the melody you could ask for, the vocal harmonies, the bass was always enough to keep it appealing, a perfect blending of styles & musicianship. Whenever I want to listen to one of the songs on this album, I'll just play the whole thing cuz it's all so great. It was _so_ good, I never thought enough of their subsequent stuff (that I heard on the radio) that inspired to buy another one of their albums. What they were playing on the radio was just too commercial for my tastes, I suppose. *But **_this_** album...*

Clear As The Driven Snow, Without You and Ukiah are also standout tracks from the same album worth checking out. Edit…the whole album is really like a greatest hits package, as there isn’t a weak song on it including the title track. Hey, I decided to look up whether BB had possibly covered this Doobs tune... and couldn't find it. BUT... I couldn't believe I found this mention about the song from Tom Johnston, who is the lead singer on it... "I finally got to do a blues tune on Captain And Me - 'Dark Eyed Cajun Woman', which was kind of my tip of the hat to BB King, if you will.'" The track also featured an additional guitarist, Jeff Baxter of Steely Dan, playing a pedal steel session with The Doobies for the first time. In 1974 he joined the band full-time. That's crazy.... I've always thought that... but never looked it up until you dudes inspired me! That's the beauty of music, my friends!!
