Ok, not to be a pedantic arse.. but I just have to say it. You always talk about DMT, but what you are really thinking about is LSD. Two completely different chemicals. DMT/ayahuasca is a completely reality-replacing experience that didn't really get widespread until the last 10-20 years. What you are describing all the time, and what these artists are singing about, is the domain of LSD, mushrooms and peyote. That is what changed society in the 60's. DMT is something else entirely. Coming from your level of knowledge on the subject you would probably think "Ahh, semantics. It's all drugs." It's honestly not, it's seriously different. A LSD trip lasts up to 10-12 hours, DMT lasts for 15 minutes.
@mikewright256
@mikewright256 5 лет назад
Jim did LSD in the dessert, and had a religious experience, and when he came out, he said he was possessed by a Native American spirit, so add that to all these songs they did, also he was a poet , my favorite lyricist

I dont think I've ever laughed so hard at a reaction video before! Watching you trying to reduce Jim Morrison's lyrics to mundane trivialities was hysterical. this reaction just makes you both seem very dense. that you couldn't enjoy this.. it's bad ass and fun as hell. his voice is so powerful and raucous.. this was a huge deal for a first song. it's talking about breaking out and through on to the other side of enlightment. the doors are based on a book called the doors of perception . pretty much if you'd open the doors of perception the veil would be dropped and you'd see that we are all one with everything and we are infinite.

This song is about breaking through the "doors of perception"- what you see and think to be real, and what really is real- to the "other side", the side of life and everything you've never seen before. This means different things to different people. The gateway could be sex, drugs, or music, or just a personal revelation you have, but at some point in our lives, we have to "break on through to the other side" and find our own version of the truth in life.

Put the bible down, pick up Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley. BTW, any reference to getting high was risky, even in 1967. The 'getting high" vocals on the track was recently included during the remastering process, it was not to be heard on their albums prior to remastering. Also, during their performance on Ed Sullivan in 1967, the band was urged to change a lyric in Light my Fire, "better" instead of "higher". The band agreed, but Jim kept the word "higher" in the performance. This led to the band being banned from performing on the Ed Sullivan show again. The Ed Sullivan Show did manage to get the Rolling Stones to change the lyrics in their performance of Let's Spend the Night Together.

I saw Doors live. I was very young but was unforgettable. Jim Morrison also wrote books of poetry as well as lyrics for their song. You absolutely could not directly reference many inferences in songs then. Most especially drugs n sex. Also Doors were around Berkeley scene. The drugs of their day n those was acid- aka LSD. Quite different than DMT I’m told. Having not taken DMT I only know it’s intense n over. Acid trips could go 24 hours. Jim was known as “ the Lizard King”. Doors would go out to desert in shamanistic way to experience acid trips. Breaking through I believe he meant smashing thru societies constraints. But he also cautions on false illusions which I believe he’s singing about w the chains. Also with the gate. You believe you’ve found the way n you find there’s these other obstacles that either impede it or shoe it to be an illusion of being the way. He was searcher as well thru many philosophical n religious imageries. Also had the whole explosion w Timothy Leery n the “ Electric Koolaid Acid Test” book about experiences of Ken Kesey n his merry band. Mescaline, psilocybin , peyote etc were plentiful n commonplace. Believe someone mentioned the Sullivan show controversy by being vilified for singing couldn’t get any HIGHER. There are many other songs that are fascinating by them - The End, LA Woman, Back Door Man, People are Strange( which think you’d find interesting about illusion n marginalization).

the song is about death. (breaking through to whatever exists outside of the physical body) morrison was obsessed with death. you could hear references to death in MANY of his songs. he saw death as the ultimate thrill ride. he toyed with the idea over and over, playing with dangerous and risky behaviors in an attempt to get closer and closer to death. there's a fine line between extreme risk-taking and suicide. jim wanted to peer over the edge of death and see what was there. he finally got so close that he fell over.

I still get goosebumps everytime I hear this song. Jim Morrison, but The Doors are true American treasures. No one sounded like them before and no one has sounded like them since. Jim Morrison was a true poet. Jim lived fast and died young, but he wasn't as bad off as people think. Sadly his death is mysterious, there are numerous situations that how it could have happened, including the sketchiness of no one seeing his body except his gf and someone to sign the certificate, even the manager who flew there didn't see it, it was a sealed casket. You should listen to "Light My Fire", their biggest hit, but you might get a kick out of them getting kicked off Ed Sullivan Show after saying "higher" live.

I always interpreted this as meaning "break on through to the other side of consciousness - like going through the "doors of perception" meaning an LSD experience. But a friend who was into Wicca says this was straight up Wiccan imagery with the conflict between day and night (day destroys the night, night divides the day).

If you want some amazing poetry check out The Ghost Song by the Doors. Morrison was one of a kind. At age 18 he asked for the complete works of Nietzsche for a graduation present. By that age he had read, Jung, Reich, Otto Rank, Huxley, Blake, Freud, Artaud, Greek philosophy... Just to name a very small few. He had a genius IQ and left references in his songs to a lot of the books he read ... One of the references here is surely about Reich, a chapter in his book: "break through to the biological realm," where instinct and the sexual impulse is valued over moral and societal judgement and pressure....

To understand Jim's lyrics look at his influences, like Rimbaud, William Blake, Aldous Huxley, shamanism, Dionysus (Bachus), he believed himself to be a shaman and was looking for enlightenment through excess, excess of drugs and psychedelics, excess of pleasure and new experiences, etc., he also believed in automatic writing as the best way to enlightenment and true creativity so he was writing stream of consciousness poetry - while really fucking high on drugs.

1967. The name of the band comes from a book called The Doors of Perception by the English writer Aldous Huxley published in 1954. The book tells of his experience with LSD and other psychedelics. The members of The Doors took LSD together on several occasions. Breaking through means to see things in a new ways because of the effects of psychedelics and how the brain processes information. The lyrics are also influenced by the book City of Night(Los Angeles) by John Rechy. Morrison also commented about seeing a girl in Venice and he had to cross a canal bridge to get to her house. The other side...a physical place... and tripping on acid to break into a new mental state. It's poetry with layers of meaning and a lot of it is no obvious.

@@almahperditae I actually found out about them in Metal Maniacs magazine in the mid 90's. First album I bought was Eternity and the only reason I bought it was because I thought the cover looked cool, lol. It took me some time to get used to his voice but it grew on me. I then gave the early stuff a try. Didn't care for the death doom vocals but I enjoy the songs A Dying wish and We Are the Gods. Alternative 4 and Judgement are great albums. But recently been listening to some of the newer stuff and now I can honestly say they're my favorite band. Trying to introduce them to new listeners is challenging because they have so many great songs. I've requested A Dying wish before. Sort of like Savatage, where do you begin because it's like listening to two different bands the early years and now.

This song is directly related to the Aldous Huxley book "Door's of Perception" from which the band gets their name. The Breakthrough he's singing about is the use of drugs to breakdown the walls of perception and pull the veil away from our perceived reality. He was aware of and enthusiastically embraced the spiritual notions of different and ancient cultures that included ceremonial drug use, namely hallucinogenics, as a means of interacting with the spirit world and gaining enlightenment. Hence... Break On Through.

The more things change the more they seem the same... I couldn't help noticing that your reactions as the music was playing were very similar to those early 70's audiences that just sat and listened and didn't move around. I can't listen to The Doors bass without bobbin' and weavin', what is with that? For the most part, the lyrics are secondary in most RnR, we don't need to know what deep meanings the artists had in their lyrics to enjoy the music. Just open your minds, relax and enjoy.

@johnr8095
@johnr8095 5 лет назад
The name The Doors is in reference to the doors of perception. So, breaking on through to other side is referencing moving to another state of consciousness probably through drugs. It’s also abou breakign down the social structure and getting to the other side (the truth) The words are hard to decipher as they don’t necessarily convey literal meaning. But it’s basically about breaking though in various ways. He also references various ways of breaking through to the other side. In one instance he is referring to a lover who has an island in her arms and country in her eyes. Which are supposedly positive traits, But her arms are a chain and her eyes are lies (the same way the country is based on falsehoods) so he’s comparing her love to country and saying both are outwardly inviting and positive but if you scratch below the surface they are based on lies. The idea thst everyone loves his baby becaise she gets high has that dual meaning too. They may love her becaise she is high all the time and so has broken through to the other side, but it could also be seen as a false love. They only love her because she has drugs. Then he references John Rechy's 1963 book City of Night. In that book, Rechy writes about "the other side" in reference to Hollywood. He appropriates some of the lines form the book “place to place, week to week, night to night” in the lines “day to day, week to week. Hour to hour. Another reference to breaking though to the other side, Finally he actually describes a gate and he talks about how he needs to break through the gate to get to the other side of the gate. Which would simply be an example of rebellion against society. Again, the lyrics are abstract in some ways and so you get disconnected imagery that doesn’t logically connect. But the u delaying theme is simply about moving past falsehood to truth. Whatever that may mean.
