This was Morrison's revolution anthem, calling the kids to rebellion. He hated the hippie movment, thought it was lame, and was foursquare for chaos and burning everything down. The line "trading your hours for a handful of dimes" was his sneer at the hippie kids who went panhandling, which he thought was disgusting. He was not one of the 60's "peace and love" people. He was about the darkness and shadows, and diving deep into what we fear.
Cat - Thanks! Next Doors will be Not To Touch The Earth! Not sure when but next time we queue up The Doors it will be that one! Thanks for the comment!
It’s my favorite Doors song and they have a lot of amazing songs. I love all their albums they were a great band.

The shirt Jim wore on the sleeve of the album was 'lent' to him by Glen Buxton from Alice Cooper after a 3 day bender becuese Jim couldn't find his and he was late for the photo shoot. Also it was Glen's sister shirt originally.
Can you believe Jim Morrison's own father never heard that song? I heard his father being interviewed and he said he didn't listen to Jim's music. How sad!
I started listening to The Doors because Five to One was sampled in the Jay-Z song Takeover. I still catch myself waiting for Jay to hop in and start spitting bars lol
The doors used a bass player during their recording sessions. Also the part about talking about his girl was all improvised while recording the song as she (Pam Courson) was in the studio at the time and they probably just made up previously after there many of fights they had.
Surprised I didn't catch that it was improvised and about Pam. We caught the tone change and how he started talking about the girl and car and stuff. Cant believe how he sung that song. Impossible to recreate or cover.
Curious fact:: Jim recorded this song , wasted (drunk) .....this is almost a pre punk song ......Robby asked Jim what meant that ratio Five to One .. he didnt answer..
The guitarist (Robbie Krieger) was one of a kind for rock n roll even for back then. He played a style known as flamingo, using no pick and strumming the top notes with his thumb and bottom with his fingers. It’s a lost art outside of the latin music world today, only modern day guitarist who uses this element a bit is Megadeth’s Kiko Laurenio
Great all round!! Lyrics vocals drums and of course guitar!! Brilliant tune!! " No one here gets out alive" the doors still sounds like their songs were recorded recently!! That's how good they were
Jim worked out that there were 5 people under the age of 25 for every one person over 25, "they got the guns but we got the numbers". that was the boomer generation. this is a revolution song calling for the young to take over. cool to see you two hanging out, the mushroom and the egg in a nest lol Im in the same boat.
Dude, the Doors were boomers, not their parents, as were the kids they were calling to rebel. The baby boom generation was the one born after the Second World War; they entered the world between 1946 and 1964. Yeah, the "boomers" were actually very cool when they were young. (We, actually. I was born in '61, at the tail end of the generation.) Remember that next time you think we're lame - we fought hard to change the world we were handed, just like the youngsters are doing now. Just like youngsters always do.
Five to One is currently featured in the new Disney film Curela…Never would of thought possible back in the 60’s.. Horse Latitudes-Hyacinth House-Wild Child
I'm not 100% sure, but I think 5 people smoke weed, 1 doesn't. It might also mean... 5 Good people, 1 Evil politician... "They (Evil politicians) got the guns, but we (the good) got the numbers... Gonna win, yeah we're (good) taking over."
