I agree with you Michael, when it comes to the extras. If the extras would have been in vinyl form, I would have jumped on this release. The RSD release of the outtakes from the Morrison Hotel album is one that I listen to often. I will stick with my Analogue Production’s release and be wait for the next best thing.

1. The Doors would sound fantastic on a Type 1 cassette someone made for you back in 1985 as part of a summer camp mix tape. 2. I have an original LP barely worn that was given to my parents 50 years ago by a record company insider. Doubt they played it more than once if that. Love love love your channel because your enthusiasm is truly infectious. Keep up the good work.

I've got a few copies of LA Woman. It's always been one of my favorite albums from one of my most favorite bands. I knew that when I first put the 45-rpm, Analogue Productions version on my turntable for the first time, that there could be no further improvement on the album's sound. The AP version beats every other version I've ever heard. I didn't buy the 50th Anniversary because I had the best sounding version already, and the 3 CD's that come with it are all I'm really interested in. But I'm not paying all that money for 3 cds. I don't care how much I love the band, this edition is far too expensive, in my humble opinion.

Tuesday Shootout! Yeah. I enjoyed this. The Doors were mainstays of AOR FM Radio when I was kid in the '70's and as such: over exposed. Over the past ten years or so I've made a conscious effort to revisit alums / bands I resisted for decades as a consequence of over exposure: Motown, Hendrix, Doors, et al. Picked up a re-issue of 'The Doors' (the Rhino Vinyl release out of Germany) this past year and loved it. So nice to have the benefit of time and maturity to hear these albums anew. I think the gentlemen below makes a fair observation regarding comparing a consumer product to an audiophile target audience. Maybe make a point of the price difference next time?

Good video as always Michael. This is probably one I'd go for the 45s as much as I hate getting up every 10 mins - I love LA Woman! On the topic of UHQRs I have decided not to support the UHQR pressings any longer for the following reason. Purchased 3 copies of KOB and only one of them was as quiet as it should have been. The other two were actually quite noisy with lots of tics throughout the records even after a couple of US cleanings. The only way to get a replacement is to destroy the first 2 copies and buy another record and then they will ship the replacement copies so you pay more shipping to Canada (pricey) on it and you're still not assured they will actually be better than the ones you have to prove you destroyed. I paid $510 CAD to get 1 clean copy of UHQR KOB. That doesn't incl the additional shipping cost I have to incur for the replacement copies. Never again.

The 45 rpm is currently back in print, saw it at the record shop last weekend. I picked it up last year, it was actually the first 45 rpm audiophile record I bought. I love the sound!
@theheepster

Another interesting shootout. But I think it's also a bit unfair to compare a consumer product with a 45 rpm audiophile product. When does the audiophile product lose in sound in such a comparison? If you want the absolute best sound, buy the 45 rpm version. It would be interesting to see how the 50th Anniversary Edition fares in sound against earlier consumer pressings. In any case, I am very satisfied with the new edition, without knowing whether there was not a better sounding version in the past (except audiophiles).

It’s all about the sound quality for me and I don’t know how you beat the AP 45 RPM. I am also very fortunate to have an original WLP Columbia Pitman Pressing that sounds amazing. This is my go to copy since there is no IGD with the long sides and I don’t have to flip the vinyl every 12 minutes. The extras with the 50th anniversary and the remastering is just not appealing to me based on what I own already that can’t be bettered from an SQ standpoint in my opinion. Great video as always though. The box looks nice but if it’s not the best mastering I am out.
@jorgegvb
@jorgegvb 2 года назад
Bruce Botnick was interviewed this week on The Vinyl Guide Podcast and he stated there would another version of this box set where all the music is on vinyl. If you rather have vinyl, you might want to wait for that version. The version with the CDs price has already dropped on Amazon.

I really like the analogy of the thin door when describing the quality of the sound comparison. I've been on the hunt for a good copy of LA Woman to upgrade my Rhino 2009 Reissue (Bernie Grundman mastering). Just wondering if you think it would be worth the upgrade to the 45 RPM Analogue Productions version from a sound quality perspective. Even if you haven't heard the Rhino/Grundman issue, how do these kind of pressings normally compare? Thanks again for taking the time to make this video along with the other ones. A very helpful and well done resource. :)

Thanks, Michael for all the very interresting video's. You need to explain to me: This only OK vinyl release from the Doors with a lot of CD's seems to be positive news for you. At the same time - or only few days ago - the new Beatles - Let It Be, sound better than ever and including some nice extra materials on vinyl are described as the disaster of the year. Why this?

As someone who already owns the 45 rpm Analogue Production edition, I appreciate your review, Michael. I will probably pass on the 50th Anniversary edition now. I find that I generally listen to the "extras" on box sets only once or twice in most cases, although the packaging on that set looks very good. Did you buy the recent Cat Stevens "Teaser and the Firecat" set?
@mundoanalogo-MH
@mundoanalogo-MH 2 года назад
Hi, Agree with you the AP 45rpm is better...but digital editions are getting closer. If you compare the 2008 Rhino box set, produced by Botnick as well, and this 50th Anniversary edition, you'll notice a big improvement. This is not a bad news, taking into account that the original reel masters tapes are getting unplayable with age.

I used to own many versions (UK and Germany) on vinyl, but i was never happy with the sound. i have to say that my DCC Gold CD, mastered by Steve Hoffman is one of the best sounding CD in my collection.( yes, sometimes a CD can be better than the vinyl). just wonder if somebody has the DCC vinyl version and can post a comment, maybe in compared to the AP, which is less expensive than the DCC . Hi Michael, Another interesting video. I'm not a big Doors fan...I would be curious to hear what die hard fans think of this new version. You mentioned that it's significantly different...of course it would be..this not simply another remaster...this is a complete REMIX of the album...so it's going to be different for sure. You have a great advantage of working on each instrument and vocal seperately ...well as much as is possible on an 8 track recording. Once again. .nice work Michael.
