Jayy, another interesting thing about this song is that it was written by Robby Krieger, The Door's guitarist. He was 20 years old, and it was the first song that he ever wrote! Jim Morrison contributed lyrics to the 2nd verse. John and Ray added their magic, and the rest is musical history ala 1966...

The Doors took their name from the book "The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley, published in 1954, about his psychedelic experiences under the influence of mescaline which he took as part of a psychiatric experiment in 1953. So yeah, drugs are always a possible interpretation when working through Jim Morrison's lyrics.

The finest keyboard intro in history since the damn things were invented despite what Rick Beato thinks mixed with John Densmore's jazz-rock drumming, Bobby Krieger's louche sensual guitar topped off with Jim Morrison slipping in a reference to Dido of Carthage's self-emolation (upon being abandoned by Aenaes of Troy) all delivered at full throttle and you have the lightning-bolt debut of style that shaped the end of the 60s and managed to rattle establishment chains on both sides of the Atlantic, which is why The Doors are right at the top of the pile when it comes to music legends. One of the finest gifts (of many) the US gave to the rest of us. Doors forever! ❤️

Interesting story about this song. When they performed this song on the Ed Sullivan show, TV was still highly censored, and because they thought it was a drug reference the Sullivan show people told them they couldn't say the word higher, they had to change it. When the rest of the guys in the band said what are we going to do how are we going to change it? Jim Morrison told them " F it!! We're not changing a thing;" and so when they sing it live on the show, they DIDN'T, and when they left the stage, the stage manager screamed" you DID it you said HIGHER!! You'll NEVER do the Ed Sullivan show AGAIN!!" To which Jim Morrison as only he would do said to the guy " we just DID Sullivan man!!"

The shorter radio edit version takes the soul from the song! Why would anybody want you to react to the shorter version? Are they short on time? Do they have somewhere else to be? Haha. They should just watch when they have time. Giving them the benefit of the doubt about that being the reason. Hate to think they're just soulless pop culture drones. Hehe :)

"Light My Fire" -- the perfect tune for fireworks on July 4th. It's also the epitome of mid-Sixties Psychedelia -- a great amalgam of Classical, Jazz and Spanish influences (Robby's guitar). Kick on the strobes and fire up the overhead projector for a liquid light show and then get lost in the sound. THANKS for playing the extended version! When their producer played them the edited version that was going to be released as the single, they did cringe and object, but in hindsight Manzarek is on record saying it was the right call. Still, when I was a kid in College Station, Texas in 66 there were stations that would play longer tracks, usually at night. This was before FM Sstations really caught on--Rock music was AM radio all the way, baby! And with AM you could get stations after dark from a long way off. At night I would listen to WLS out of Chicago, WNOE out of New Orleans, and some others I can't recall at this late date. WCKY was another but I don't remember its city. KTSA out of San Antonio would play the long version of In A Gadda Da Vida every night. Fond memories...
